loudandclear
Hello everyone, wondering if a Yamaha 5150 home theater receiver is too poor of a receiver to push the bottom end of K-horns? The bass is almost non-existent. The highs and mids are good. I am waiting to pick up a Sansui 9090 just haven't got it yet. Also would length of speaker lead have a direct bearing on this issue? It is 16 ga. approx 35 ft. P.S. I understand this receiver is way less than ideal but just want to see if this is what is causing poor bass response. Thanks
Budman
poor bass would be caused by them not sealed into the corners and not your receiver
loudandclear
That is what I thought as well, I did check the woofer drivers and they are both showing 6 ohms.I believe that is the correct rating.I also having them sitting on one inch pads because they are on a tiled floor, I can't imagine that should matter. Budman
pictures would help unscrew and retighten the screws on the crossovers
loudandclear
They are snugly fit into corners with 10 ft walls on all sides. So you don't suspect any issues with the speakers do you, like drivers not functioning? I have heard and read that it would hard to damage them. The Dude
Check the polarity of the drivers as well make sure they are hooked up right.
ricktate
Could be a lot of things...polarity on speakers.....on drivers in woofer chamber.....loudness switch on receiver ......need a little more info. I got mine running on HK 430 with 24 watts and that's more than enough. Maybe a pic if you can figure out how to do it there is a link to show you. loudandclear
I guess I was just thinking the receiver is a P.O.S.
loudandclear
Have heard from some that K-horns can be sensitive to some amps/receivers. will the Sansui produce more bass?
loudandclear
If woofers are non-working they would not show any reading on a ohm meter is that correct? They either work or they don't? Also noticed that removing the couch between speakers made a difference. Thanks
JJkizak
Make sure on your electronic setup in the Yamaha (not sure what their setup is) that it is not set for small speakers as in other brands, Denon for instance. JJK
loudandclear
I did check everything multiple times on electronics and wiring on speakers. Appears to be a furniture placement. So as long as my speakers are working ok I will have to deal with furniture placement. My set-up is K-horns wired in parallel with a pair of Heresy in the rear. 2.1 stereo.
wuzzzer
Does your receiver have the feature to set them to full range? Are they set up that way? Do you have a subwoofer?
mustang guy
Does your receiver have the feature to set them to full range? Are they set up that way? Do you have a subwoofer? That's what I was thinking. I peeked a the Yamaha manual, and you need to set the [MAIN (MAIN SPEAKERS)] as "LARGE". You should set the [bASS (LFE/BASS OUT)] to "SW". Here is why: [MAIN (MAIN SPEAKERS)] LARGE: Select this position if your main speakers have high ability for bass reproduction. In this position, full-range signals present on the main channels are output from the main speakers [bASS (LFE/BASS OUT)] ...When the LARGE position is selected for "MAIN", in the SW position, no signal is distributed from the main channels to the SUBWOOFER OUTPUT terminal... loudandclear
Ok I will check but pretty sure it is set up this way. Thanks will let you know. And yes I do run a sub.For some reason I just don't think this is the correct receiver for this application. JMO. Don Richard
What year are your Khorns? 6 ohms DCR indicates an 8 ohm woofer. The DCR of a Khorn woofer should be 3.2 ohms, unless a change has been made on the newer models. I am unaware of any such change.

psg
Do you pipe insulation foam to seal the speakers to the walls? No bass could be also be from room interaction rather than the receiver (unless it is setup with speakers set to small instead of large as mentioned above)
loudandclear
Yes I did update caps on crossovers (crites) 6 mo. ago. re-checked ohm reading, got 2.5 on each one. The speakers are 1980. Receiver is set to 'large'for speaker size. Edited January 21, 2014 by loudandclear
