Anyone else besides me get theater burnout?

I just realized today that I can't remember the last time I was out in my theater and actually watched a movie. I'm guessing it's been at least 3 months since I have turned my gear on. And considering how much money I have invested in that room, it sure seems like such a waste.

I'm guessing this would not happen to the folks who have their gear in thier living room where you watch TV every day, but what about the people who have a dedicated room just for their theater? Do you go through spells where you don't go in for long periods of time?

I've even considered downsizing a bit. I could use the money for my Jeep.

So, why downsize? Why not watch TV in there as well. Or read or set up a game table to play games while listening to music. I actually am glad you asked this question. We have wondered if we would use a room enough if it was a dedicated theatre.

While I originally "wished" I had a dedicated room, I am glad that my room actually serves in a multipurpose fashion, getting lots of use. With six pinball machines and a computer desk included, there is ALWAYS something to do. I hosted a long time friend from out of town this weekend, and he enjoyed the time spent in the room very much.

m00n,

I had to stop and think on this one..............could it be maybe a combination of things? i.e. summer, warmer weather, and more activities that draw you outside the house more?..............

.talk it over with your Wife fist before you make the plunge to sell your equipment.

It has been fun, following the adventures of the m00n HT...........and I would be saddened to hear, later on down the line .that you Wished you hadn't sold off your HT............... What a situation........... Best of Luck

Na... I'm not selling off my home theater. I was just thinking about selling 1 brand new RC7 (well, ok it has a bout 2 whole whoppen hours of play on it) and my Harman Kardon PA-4000.

That would leave me with 3 side surounds, 1 rear. To balance things out I would take the 3rd side surround and move it to the rear. Then I'd have 2 side surrounds as per normal specs and 2 rears. My HK has 7 powered outputs so I would not need my amp any longer.

Hell, the other day I was even considering selling my RSW-12. But I think I'll be keeping that for now.

As far as TV? Well, there is no place for a TV really now that I have the RF7 center not to mention I really don't want to buy a TV. The room also does not get a lot of usage because it's not in the house. It's in a totally different building outside the house. Our house came with what was an old 3 bay tractor garage that. The owner before us turned it into a somewhat of a livable house. I'd never have lived in it, but it's great for my shop, theater and office.

I think you have the same disease a lot of us have. Too many interests to allow one to become and stay dominant. I would not recommend undoing your fine work simply because you have other things going on. Lets face it you finished you room so the challenge aspect has worn off a bit. I am sure your interest will rekindle itself in another form. One note of interest is that I am assuming you suffer from the same affliction I do in that once you check the box off you innately look for the next box to check.

what! no cable or satellite hook-up to a projection screen HT? Are you crazy? How can you see those late night soft core porn shows at 200% if you dont use your HT for TV? No wonder you are NOT using it. You need to see Law & Order on the big screen, with actively-powered, solid-state subwoofers, to truly appreciate the sound track. How can you watch the blood & guts local news without the big screen?

That is probably one reason why I still have my gear upstairs in the living room. I do use my gear to watch TV as well as listen to music why sufing on the net (I have a computer setup in the dining room, which is attached to the living room). I seriously considered making one of the rooms down in the basement a dedicated theater, but at the same time, it seems that I would get more use out of it. Most likely, if I did move my gear down in the basement as a dedicated theater, I'll want to setup a computer down there as well. Also, I'll have to setup a satellite feed so that I can watch TV down there as well. In the living room, I'll end up setting up a two-channel system with a smaller (basically, the 32 inch TV I now have, since if I move the gear downstairs, I'll be wanting to get a larger TV or even a projector).

Also to add: I have not made any changes to my system since I got that B&K amp last November. Primarily because I had other things I needed to spend money on, as well as the whole winter taken up skiing, and now during the summer, I've been doing some traveling as well as just general outside activities (hiking the river, camping, etc).

Like I mentioned, I do use my system pretty often, mostly to watch the occassional bit of TV and listening to music. The last movie I watched on there was doing a Lord of the Rings marathon when the third movie came out on DVD, and that was a good month ago.

Moon, when I was building my home theater, I used to fall into one of three specific phases in terms of how I'd spend my money. There were:

1) Home Theater

2) My truck

3) Clothes

That's ALL I spent any money on, and it just kept rotating back and forth. Sounds kinda like you're wanting to supe up your Jeep, but I recommend you don't sell anything. Everything you bought, acquired, and hooked up is all there for a reason, and whether you watch a movie in there once a day or once a year, I think the moment you turn your system on and the magic begins, you'll sit back and realize just what captured you in the first place. Just save up in order to buy the other necessities or pleasures in life, but I think you shouldn't sell your beautiful gear.

I have experienced the same HT burnout as you the past few months... I just recently (a few weeks ago) finally watched a movie with my gf... before that, it had been a LONG time before the HT was used. Now, I don't have a lot to do (she is visiting family for a week)... so I got bored and redid my HT completely. I found that my old Monster cable XP had oxidation all the way through it... so I replaced all of it with brand new XP in navajo white, so it would look nicer. Then I rearranged all of my electronics to prepare for a turntable of some sort... and am completely rebuilding the sub I built a while back. Reorganized the power supply scheme as well... and now I am no longer burned out, really. I am excited to use it again because in a sense, it is new. When you get to used to something, sometimes it gets boring... so, go change something in the HT. Rearrange something... buy something new and unique... build an underground tunnel to your HT so you don't have to go outdoors to get to it. 3.gif

Or... you could break down and move some of your gear inside so it at least sees some use.

My big problem in the HT is SOFTWARE. Especially rental software.

I was in the Blockbuster store yesterday, first time in a few months. They have a big rack of pre-viewed DVD's for sale - 3 for $25. I spent an hour looking around, and all I had in hand was "Kill Bill"...........couldn't find 2 more worth getting.

So I rented "Kill Bill" and "Miracle" (story of the 1980 US Olympic hockey team).....best of a poor lot at the video store. Is it any wonder I only go to the cineplex only once every 2 or 3 years?

IME, the only way to get good DVD titles is to BUY them.....especially for concert DVD's.....and re-releases of older classic films. Current releases are essentially worthless (about 4 good movies per year are released, IMO), as are the studios currently. Movies have gone the way of pop music - lots of pretty faces and effects - and no substance.

It helps that my HT is hooked up to the cable and also functions as a music system too, and is in the room we hang out in. Great for concerts as well, but for movies, it doesn't get the use I thought it would.

If i watch even 1 movie between the end of may and the begining of october i'd be lucky !!!

Canadian winters are long and cold ( good for movie watching and stereo tweeking ) canadian summers are short so we compact 12 months worth of outdoor fun into 4 or 5 months.

So the 80k plus room sits and collects dust till the leaves change colour.

actually moon I can related to what you said, I think Spiderman 2 will be the first movie I have seen in theatres in eons. As for the HT, likewise, mine has sat for weeks without usage and I to have thought, wow, I spent ALL this cash and hardly used it. In fact this last weekend was the first time I had music on for over 2 hrs in eons....wahooooooo.....9.gif

but you know what, when I still sit there and watch the national news at 11pm, I go wow, I own this puppy as I look around, then think of upgrades, ie. my Marantz Reference DV12S1 will soon be the DV12S2, and why, SACD capability my 12S1 doesn't have, more $$$$$, how many SACD's do I have you ask...NONE...lmao..10.gif

it's a hobby my friend and I'm proud I own it.....2.gif

Yeah I'm proud of my gear as well. I think it's a combo of things, summer, new jeep, nothing really motovating me any longer to get out there and finish my theater.

Mostly my jeep. There are lots of accessories I want for it, don't really want to put more on my credit card. Selling 1 RC7 and my amp sure sounds good right about now... You know, steal from peter to give to paul. 2.gif

m00n,I can see how you could get kinda burned out with your present HT situation.HT or music is best in an area you're living in,imo.I have a dedicated MUSIC/HT room with a complete Klipsch/HK/sacd/dvda set up.This room is soundproofed w/heavy insulation and two layers of drywall and two doors that seperate it from the rest of my house.Even so I find that I listen to my set up in my living area more often,Klipsch,Rotel,Denon etc..I'm not sure why since my other room is the logical/practical choice but I think its cause I feel more comfortable in the main part of my house.

I've been through the same thing as you,I get into my cars for a while(money pit),I get into guitars and amps for a while,I get into scooters for a while, boats for a while etc...The one thing that remains after I get bored with my latest obsesson is the music, thats the one thing that is a lifetime of pleasure. You do have a great set up and you can still get many years of enjoyment, sometimes you do need a temporary change of pace.

My wife asked me one time.. "What if the room of your dreams gets done?" I know, hard to explain. I worry about this big time myself. I would have "Killed"... (not really but you know what I mean..) I really, really, just would have been in awe if I had all of this stuff in my 20's. I can quote you backwards and forwards why this and that is what, and why this should be used and why...specs and stats...

It is not a phobia of getting it (as far as the room sounding great) all done, and something else better is out.. Just the completion of a great dream too. Then what?
