Why not just kill everyone who has anything beyond a high school diploma. After that, we can also eliminate everyone who can think at early age. And then we'll have a utopian society where everyone will be an obedient, productive, average member of a stagnant society. A hint - look up China's "cultural revolution" and Stalin's "purges" in a good history book. People who blame everything on the 'elitist leftist academia' are as gullible (and scary) as the people who rave about the 'liberal media' (a term which is on the border between preposterous and downright stupid). The fact is that some people actually think about the current situation in the world and make certain judgements is a sign of the society's development. Now not everyone who thinks and has an opinion is right. And not all of them are qualified to make those judgements, but what really gets me is that you don't understand that, nor do you seem to care. Before making that statement, you should have familiarized yourself with the 1st amendment of our Constitution. It's not up to you, or the society to allow or disallow thought or opinion. I bet you also proundly go around quoting that (oh my god) the vast majority of college professors are liberal... and (gasp) they must be brainwashing everyone who goes to college, making them into (wait for it) - EVIL LIBERALS, right? Firstly, here's something from Merriam-Webster Dictionary: Main Entry: 1lib·er·alPronunciation: 'li-b(&-)r&lFunction: adjective5 : BROAD-MINDED; especially : not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms6 : of, favoring, or based upon the principles of liberalism b capitalized : of or constituting a political party advocating or associated with the principles of political liberalism. Main Entry: lib·er·al·ismPronunciation: 'li-b(&-)r&-"li-z&mFunction: noun1 : the quality or state of being liberal2 a: often capitalized : a movement in modern Protestantism emphasizing intellectual liberty and the spiritual and ethical content of Christianity b : a theory in economics emphasizing individual freedom from restraint and usually based on free competition, the self-regulating market, and the gold standard c : a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties Since I suppose that you can read, you should examine the paragraphs above with great interest, because I guarantee you that this is the first time you've been introduced to the word 'liberal' in its real meaning. What you should really regret is the fact that liberalism as a movement has been vilified as of late. When did being for intellectual liberty, autonomy and protection of liberties become so evil? As for "blame America first"? Well - I disagree with people who think that, but that's not the point. Of all the people in the academia who have political opinions, a tiny minority (albeit quite a vocal one) is grossly at odds with America as a whole. And they may be wrong (at least that's what I think). However, I think that it's always good to take a good hard look at yourself before rushing off to blame someone else. If you think that American foreign policy in the past 50 years had nothing to do with the current situation, then you should really read up on some history. It seems that while ignorance is not an excuse under criminal law, that political and historical ignorance has become the rule among many people. Before I voted for the first time in my life, I spent over 6 months studying history in my spare time (mostly world history, since I had studied American history before). And you know what - after I was done, I realized that for two decades of my life, I had known nothing about the world. I see that I've strayed from the topic at hand, so let me come back to the issue. What you wrote above is just evidence that you have never been among the Academic society. There are no less patriots among the educated people, than among everyone as a whole. Actually, I would say that there are more, since not only are they patriotic, they also KNOW what they're patriotic about. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And to the original poster: As for America's greatest blunders, well let me give you a few, in no particular order or rank: - Prohibition - Suppression of the civil rights movement for nearly a century - McCarthy trials and that entire witchhunt/farce. - "War on Drugs" - Backing of the Afganistani mujahadeen against the Soviets in the late 70s/early 80s That's just some that I could come up with offhand. Hope that helps. I may add more later if I think of them, so check back if you want.

The words "free competition" and "autonomy of the individual" seem a bit at odds with current Democratic Party thinking.

meuge
Scott - just because the word is being misused, it doesn't mean that we should keep using it that way. For example - we could all call you genius. But since that is clearly far from the truth, according to you we should change the meaning of the word genius from someone exceedingly smart to someone exceedingly stupid. Just because someone was looking for a political label to turn into a curseword and came upon the word 'liberal', it doesn't make it right. Furthermore, it has now become a tool of political manipulation.
