Olorin
This is a question that started rolling around in my head after rplace made a comment in an Academy thread about the cost of those speakers vs. the rest of the theater. He said something about what he thought was "average," and that number seemed to me rather large. So no I'm kind of curious as to how much the average Klipschter here has sunk in his setup. The last thing I mean this to be is a brag thread or a "mine's bigger than yours" or a "you're just showing off" kind of adventure, but I suppose it's the nature of opening this kind of can of worms that some worms will be larger than others and some worms will be slimier than others. I'd like ot ask that to the extent it's possible to be humble and kind in a thread like this, we do so. In the interest of simplicity, let's just tally the cost of the things in our current system rather than the entire journey from that first spark of interest to the current state of the place. I also think it's fair that if you have a built/rebuilt room or an addition to your house specifically for being a theater, that constuction cost ought to count. If it's just a room that was already there, you probably shouldn't say "well, 12% of my house is the HT, so I have 12% of the cost of my house in my hobby." On the other hand, we ought to include the ancillary stuff like interconnects and acoustic treatments, and the media collection is certainly part of the cost of the hobby. Feel free to itemize as much or as little as you'd like. You can detail every part, or you just just say "10 Kilobucks." So, I'll start. (Edit, correction) $400 net for two Chorus IIs and an Academy (thanks UPS), $700 for two Quartets, an Academy, and the gas to go get them, and $400 for the sub. $1500 in speakers. $150 for the DVD player, $50 for the CD player, $1600 for the television, and $200 for the receiver (another "right place, right time" bit of luck.) $165 for the Pronto remote. $2265 in primary equipment, then. About 60 DVDs at an average of about $15 each. About $900. Cheap interconnects and Home Depot speaker wire. $100. What's that, $4765? Probably a fairly low number compared to what a lot of guys have in, but again, I'm interested in knowing what kind of average falls out. It's certainly cheaper than racing boats. So let's see what this hobby costs!

rplace
Great idea O, I was thinking the exact same thing when I posted that comment in the Academy thread with 10K coming off the top of my head. rhathawy
I installed a Middle Atlantic Slim 5-43 rack. Since I have access to the back of the rack there was no need to go with one of the more elaborate models. They are nice, but add substantially to the final unit cost. I attached a picture of the installed rack.

Petrol
alas . . . I would NOT mistake either of MY somewhat organized & displayed piles of audio/visual equipment as a Home Theatre . . . I would say that I have spent about $1600-$1800 for what sets in our 'living room' and another $1000-$1200 for what is in 'The Mens Club' pity me if you must, or just send me a full Ref 7 system and I'll make the rest work out
oldtimer
OK, 1400 for new Forte II's in 1989 (was originally used for two channel but I will not complicate the equation by employing any discounting) 525 for an Academy 390 for another pair of Forte II's Gift of 5.1 Panasonic receiver 100 for dvd player 150 for vcr 350 for 27" tv $2915? total I have raced boats (not my own) and I guarantee that just one sail usually costs more than this. kenratboy
Hmmmm, I don't want to mention some of the 'special' deals I have been able to take advantage of (thanks work!), but I have paid between 40-70% off retail for everything in my system. Retail, about $4,500, my price is a bit under $2,000. I am thinking about getting a 42" LCD RPTV, and I can get something nice (brand new) for about 40-50% off. I am 20 and this is just the warm up round. I fully expect to spend well over $100,000 on my system before it is 'done' - I am a snob for good sound and very nice things (thats NOT a good thing!!!) I am sure using 'I' a lot!
