Memebers Weekly Music Recommendations-Oct. 3

Well put on your shades and spritz him down with Lanacane, this month's

winner of a Klipsch t-shirt is none other than Sunburnwilly.

He'll never have to fear the sun again as he strolls the beach in one

of the coolest fashion statements to ever hit Laguna Beach.

Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of

music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp

etc.)

As usual I'll kick it off with:

Gomez, "Bring It On", alt-indie rock?, cd

Picked this up at a library book sale over the weekend. I know

nothing about these guys which appear to be English

indie-rockers. A very cool layered sound with lots going on

instrumental wise, the standard insert 20's something singer here voice

is a actually pretty good, and the recording quality is superb. I

particularly liked the first track called "Get Miles". I guess

I'm not a total old fart afterall because this cd is only 7 years old

versus my usual 60's, 70's picks. I like it a lot and have already

played it through twice.

So what do you have to share this week?

I've got two of them. "Staying Power' is really great late night

stuff. The Twins looked askance when I first put it on but since

then when I play it they go "Oh Yeah". It's really cute trying to see

them trying to sing in a really, really low voice.

Well, I'll get a little more spirited. Mine is Rory Gallaher- Live, On LP, Blues/rock.

The official title is Live in Europe but mines an original copy, the first few were pressed without the" in Europe"

Rory was a guitar master who is sadly missed. I rank this live LP up there with The Who- Live at Leads.

Pick this bad boy up, GREAT blues tunes.

Stephen Stills:Manassas. Classic country rock. No hits, just simple, wonderful songs one after another with alot of great players and guests. A little more rocking than CSN-- I read Bill Wyman thought about quitting the Stones and joining Manassas because he enjoyed the experience so much--you can hear these guys having a great time. I burned it and put "Change Partners" and "Love the One You're With" on there too. Great disc I never seem to tire of--

I'll stick with the genre that I know the best this week again....Christian/Inspirational Rock/Adult Contemporary.

Here's my pick this week. "Casting Crowns--LifeSong" The sophomore release from this band builds on their self-titled debut from last year. Rock solid lyrics and and great Adult contemporary Rock riffs. Great album to listen to while you drive or want to sit and ponder the lyrics of a group...

Just got the new nickelback. Well folks it rocks bigtime. A little something for everyone. A couple of chick tunes to pay the bills, but other than that good stuff with heavy to rock to country-ish. I think even the hair band lovers will dig a couple tunes. Billy Gibbons is a special quest on a couple tunes. How's that Picky! Blew my mind because i'm a huge fan of Billy also. What's great is Chad was freinds with Dimebag Darrell. Nickelback wrote a song and included a Dime solo with the blessings from Vinnie, Dimes' brother. They were actually doing stuff before his tragic death. The song is about the death of Dime, and is titled " Side of a bullet". Totally hair raising if your a Dime fan to hear him play again. What a loss.

I'm going through audio withdrawal this week. Seriously, The only audio I've been hearing is the stock radio in my '96 Ford Escort.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Ah well, I've got a new audio toy on the way and yesterday I went to one of my old haunts of college days past, a used record (and now CD) store called Papa Jazz...

I picked up these Jimmy Smith CDs based on what I've read in the forum these past years

Jimmy Smith: 'The Sermon' and 'Back at the Chicken Shack'

Dire Straights: Brothers in Arms (I heard a cut from this at the Hope gathering... beautiful sound)

David Grisman Quintet (a CD mastered from a 1976 analog session) bound to be good.

Can't wait to get back to my khorns!

You don't know how addicted you are until the sound ain't there.

"Memebers?" Sounds like that kid (Mushmouth?) from the Fat Albert gang.[:D]

My recommendation this week is a 2003 concert DVD of the Chieftains, entitled "Down the Old Plank Road," performing in Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the renovated former home of the Grand Ol' Opry. They perform many Celtic songs, to perfection, of course, as well as a few American traditional songs. A big appeal for many will be the parade of guests, which include old and new movers and shakers of the American bluegrass and folk-country music scene, such as Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, Martina McBride, Gillian Welch, and about a dozen others. The DVD is a full two hours, and the 20 or so numbers are interspersed with brief but informative comments from most of the artists. Also, during several numbers, several Irish dancers will spring out onto the stage and show some impressive moves (though no shirtless ones, as in "Riverdance").[:P]
It has a DD5.1 audio track, which makes for a nice front soundstage array, but there's little in the surround channels.
I am only an occasional fan of Celtic music, and rarely select it for home listening, but whenever I hear it, it is always catchy. Coincidentally, I attended a Chieftains concert in another Nashville concert hall in 1985.
The origins of bluegrass in Celtic music is obvious, and this blend of the two is quite entertaining for anyone with any leanings towards either type of music.

"A couple of chick tunes to pay the bills, but other than that good stuff" What is that supposed to mean?

Funny--LOL

I guess a lady would say "its got two fun songs I love to sing along to , and the rest is screechy guitars and yelling".

Nothing is more a PITA when you are listening to your favorite rocking stuff, and your lady turns it down so she can talk above it on the phone with her girlfriends all day.

You gotta have some chick songs to at least be able to turn it up a little--

Blue Dogs and Friends " Live at the Florence Little Theater " CD Blue Dogs are a somewhat South East regional band . Their style of music is a bit hard to define . They sound a bit like a cross of Little Feat , Dixie Dreggs , Gratefull Dead and Dave Mathews . Allthough I found this disc in the Country section of the library , I would best describe their style as good time , jam band , rock n roll . Perfect background music for parties or get togathers . The disc is manufactured and distributed by Redeye Distribution in case anybody is interested .

I got two new sets this week.

Van Halen: "The Best Of Both Worlds" - CD - Rock - This is some kicking rock. I can't seem to get

"And The Cradle Will Rock" out of my head.

Cream: "Royal Albert hall, London, May 2-3-5-6 2005" - CD - Classic Rock - The guys may not play with

quite the same wild intensity as they did back in 1968, but they are about 37 years older. They

still have the chops. Something I don't remember hearing by them back in the day that was on

this set is "Stormy Monday". Always liked that song. There is also an 8+ minutes version of

"Sunshine Of Your Love". And for any of you drum fans out there, Ginger Baker resurrects

"Toad". They covered all the bases.
