Dynaco_EL34
The access is a folding staircase, as found in homes. I can not remove the folding stairs. The only option is to remove the grill cloth. I hope they are open to that plan.
oldbuckster
Take out the wall..................worry about repair after speakers are removed............Anything is possible, watched 2 La scala's loaded into a Subaru Wagon, never thought it could be done, it was, no damage............Tear the wall off the sucka'...............EH !!!!!!! DizRotus
It's difficult to imagine that the speakers will not fit through the opening with the folding stairs, without removing the stairs. When the stairs are down, is there not space to fit a 24.5" x 24.5" square piece of cardboard through the opening while staying perpendicular to the angle of the stairs? If there is, then take them down the stairs.
tk49
Robert, where are you and the lascala's at? I'ld love to be part of the demo, we can redo anything we tear apart. Except the lascala's. Tom
Marvel
At this point, it would be very helpful if Marvel could whip together an exploded view of the building, too. I mean, he IS Marvel... I am humbled... [:$]
Dynaco_EL34
That was the first thing I checked. It is 1" too narrow...
jtnfoley
Most folding stairs I've seen are trimmed out like a pre-hung door... Framed rough opening, put the staircase in, face nail the trim, lower the stairs, and shim and screw the frame to the RO framing. A sawzall, a putty knife, and hammer and the whole thing is done. Do yo have any qualified/insured contractor/carpenter types among your buds? A state license and bond will go a long way toward convincing the church to let you extract them, and will almost certainly cost less than staging installation / removal to repair the grillwork. Dynaco_EL34
I talked with them and they are OK with me removing the grill and installing new ones!!! This will work out better for tham as the grills I construct will be removable, should they ever have a need to use them. This will be much easier than removing the casing of the folding stairs. In my work we do a lot of this...

fini
Yeah, Robert, we're getting antsy for photos! Oh, one more tip: If you do the removal and grill replacement during a church service, make sure you wear nice clothes.
Dynaco_EL34
I got the speakers home tonight. I did not think to take a camera with me. Here are a couple of pics of them in my laundry room. http://sport-touring.org/DCP_4108a.jpg http://sport-touring.org/DCP_4110.jpg
JohnA
Wow! they're in sweet shape! they'll finish up very nicely. I used a 3/4" x 3/4" strip all around the front to cover the plies and frame a top grille. It turned out right well.
Islander
Very nice! Now aren't you glad you didn't wreck them to save them?
Dynaco_EL34
Well I figured that disassembly was not possible. I just wanted confirmation.
Daddy Dee
Robert, This is a very cool rescue for LaScalas. It would be a shame to leave them there for the archaeologists. Looking forward to pics when you have a chance. Did I mention this is very cool?

I love the look of the original La Scalas, sans grill.
rcarlton
Wow, they look nice. I agree light sanding and tung oil would be a good way to go.
