JBryan
My wife and I saw Amy at the Virgin Festival this past August. She looked painfully gaunt and stood there staring at the floor most of the show just going through the motions. My wife loves her music and I'm OK with most of it but all I could think of was what folks must have thought when Billie Holiday tried to make it through her last shows - so sad. Mas - I just wonder what the person was on when they came up with the idea of a singing and dancing Purple Dinosaur named Barney... must've been some pretty strong stuff! kuisis
You're right, should have said good jazz and punk! Kidding aside I shouldn't have made such a generalization. It doesn't matter anyways, it should be about the music!
oldbuckster
It would be about the MUSIC, but the Press and Television bring up the drug use, not anyone on this forum, and it is almost presented like it's cool, it is not cool, and Stars going to rehab is a joke. What's next Amy does Rehab on MTV ? Her music is good, nothing new, old stuff redone, add some background static and noise for a retro feel, and there you have it. Besides, do you really need a Grammy Show to tell you what good music is? Hats off to Herbie Hancock, that was a big win for him, and his musical style .................. kuisis
It was about the music till the second post of the thread I believe. [*-)] To each his/her own. Tom

nu2toobs
Then I guess you won't be purchasing the cd? Say what you will but she does have an incredible voice and since the award was for a musician and not admission into MENSA I guess she deserved it. You don't have to be an alcoholic junkie to appreciate her music. If you don't want to listen to musicians on drugs I hope you don't like jazz or punk. ..or rock (all genres), country and I'm sure there are some classical musicians that are addicts. It is an unfortunate part of our society.
thebes
I'm a big fan of hers although I do have trouble with the recording quality on some of her songs, esepcially on her first release. She's a major talent, very much reminds me of Billie Holiday's voice and phrashing. I predict that over time she will either burn out or rise to new heights and be remembered fondly for a long long time. Could care less about the hype and commercialism, the drug stories etc. How can we even pretend that we know if any of it's true ,or just masterful hype to increase her visibility. Soundbound. Love that video clip you posted. The slower pace and jazzier rhythm really brings out her emotional qualities and fantastic pipes. Hey it's a personal choice. If you don't like her that's fine. However, I get the sense some of your are arriving at this conclusion having heard her once through your computer or tv speakers and that's just plain silly. What's the point of owning those big boxes if you don't put something new on them once in awhile. When I got back into listening to music I discovered that time had wrought a wonderful change. I no longer sneered at anything that didn't fit my preconceived notions of what constituted good music. What a delight that change has been and has opened up wonderful new avenues of music to me. jacksonbart
My favorite moment was when the Grammy statue yalped and flipped off Winehouse as she grabed him a little too low upon winning for best song.
Guest srobak
You don't have to be an alcoholic junkie to appreciate her music. You also don't have to be an alcoholic or junkie to make music. But - since so many do - so many kids - and grownups - idolize these people, their behaviour and presume that they go hand-in-hand, so they must do it to be a raging success too. WTFever. "You have no idea how stressful it is to be in this lifestyle," she says, climbing into her $200,000 Brabus prepared Mercedes S class, in efforts to excuse her drug use. My response to her i, "no you ignorant schleb - you have no idea how stressful it is to wonder if you are going to be able to put your next meal on the table and keep the heat and lights on another couple weeks during the dead of winter." Man do I hate ignorant, "troubled" celebs.
mark1101
I can't imagine myself going to work and addressing a crowd or even speaking to my boss in an intoxicated state.....or doing my job...trying to do my best work....in an intoxicated state. As many think these musicians on drugs have a peripheral problem of drug use, I don't. I think they live it. They create their music and lyrics while on drugs. They work and play while on drugs. They perform sporadically while on drugs. They show poor form on a daily basis.....and yet they win awards and are portrayed as genius artists. I admit I love the music. But when you get right down to it, they are nothing more than sloppy individuals......just like any of us showing up for work drunk or hung over. No different. oldtimer
Mas, it could happen. I even have a candidate from one of my teachers. It's not likely to happen by me however, haha. Thebes, you have a good point because the only time i have heard her was just recently on the link and was on my pro media 2.0's. But my judgement of what I heard had little to do with any subtleties in her voice, it was rather an opinion on the entire picture. As I said earlier, there was nothing earth shattering or original about it. It just seemed rehashed from the past and not that good of a rehash for notice. Maybe my expectations were too high from all the hype, but I was severely unimpressed. If someone had copied a brilliant charlie parker solo from 1950 it would have been better in my ears. I just don't get it at this point.
oldtimer
As for drugs as inspiration, it has been there for artists and musicians for a long time. It probably started in the pre history days. It's all about perception and changing perception and new perceptions, and yes substances can be a shortcut/jumpstart. The problem is if one becomes dependent on these just to get by in daily life. then the magic of creation is gone and you are left with dependency. Artist and intelligence seem to be mutually exclusive in far too many instances. "stressful" my butt.
Islander
People are always joking about Keith Richards and his habit, but the man does take care of business. How often, if ever, have the Rolling Stones had a no-show? In spite of any drug and alcohol problems in the band, they never forget that they're pros and they come out and do the best show they can, even if it's not as great as it was years ago. They may be stoners, but they're not wasters like some of this new generation that really seem unable to keep it together.
oldtimer
Pat, good point about the stones for taking care of problems in between tours, but i don't think you can generalize that today's generation is any worse than those of the past in terms of self destruction. Fish
What's not to love? If ya DIG that you should see some of the skanks in a small town up the road from me.Some of them actually don't look too bad compared to this one. Also Peg Bundy was/is a beauty queen compared to this one.
IndyKlipschFan
You know, I bet it takes a lot of make up and just the right designer clothes to look that bad.. Let alone hours at the local hair salon. LOL There is something sooo wrong about a look like this.... But it begs you to stare! Can you imagine this look at our local USA high schools in 2008? LOL Thank goodness It IS really about the music though.. I have listened to the CD several times now... The arrangements are incredible. The "look" is not the act, thank goodness, she is the real deal. Now I will have to visit some past CD's and form more of a full opinion. Seems to def be worth all the hype though.. Pretty cool! Maybe it is finally the Skanks time to shine... If even for a instant! LOL Just please, for me... I can handle the skinnyness... I can handle the bad make up.. Heck I can even handle the wild peg bundy hairdoo..... just please.... FIX THE TEETH! And do not blame it (the teeth) as a british thing! hahahahaha
Fish
One thing I may note is from what I seen on the news the band looked/sounded competent.
