  1. Pride, ego. I'm guilty of it too. No one likes having their opinions contradicted or put under the microscope. There is also the problem of lack of body language and many times things just don't translate well with the keyboard - and so it leads to misunderstandings. Something else I've noticed is how many simply can't deal with being challenged. IOWs, as they say, they like to dish it out but they can't take it. When they find out they can't get away with personal attacks and/or derogatory statements, they leave. This forum used to be inhabited by older adults, most who were fairly technical and level headed, though admittedly not always. There isn't near the participation there used to be - sometimes I notice there's only three people browsing a section of the forum.

  2. They don't sound anything alike, not even remotely in the same ballpark. Heritage has a horn loaded midrange (compression driver) that runs to the hot side, and Reference does the midrange with cones. Heritage is an acquired taste. They are not smoother than Reference, in fact, they closely mimic a live performance, which often sounds brash and disjointed. Many end up changing the horns and tweeters in order to find the smoothness and refined quality found in Reference and other more conventional designs. With Reference, by the time the horn takes over - the midrange is long gone. Based on the information you provided, it doesn't sound like you have room for what amounts to being rather large plywood boxes, and trust me, it's a sound you will want to hear first before investing in. The 7s will serve you well, I owned them for many years before moving to Klipschorns and then Jubilees. I've also owned Heresys and Cornwalls. I eventually sold everything and built my own monitors, craving simplicity. Enjoy where you're at, you may someday find yourself wishing you'd never left.

  5. Yes Dean, right here, right here looking at that fine specimen of a crossover you have for a avatar. That is kind of what I have in mind for the wife's Khorns. Still, I have not got into their guts to confirm/rewire speakers, im waiting on my bank and have little motivation for anything else.

  7. And yet another day begins of my "John Lennon" protest, (Day three of coffee/duggans, movies, sleep). Silent protest/waiting for the bank to kick down a piece of the nest egg, then it's party time, well as soon as I pay OFF all the bills. Pulled enough out to give the wife her gambling binge (three days should do it), and her/me a little speaker upgrade funding.

  8. Awesome you made it aboard here at klipsch. I certainly admire your direction and driving force. Heresy on tubes with lp. Easy thing is that as are stage monitors extremely efficient your heresy' are as well.. You can use your speakers with the smallest of amp around and will get equal what most speakers output with their lower efficiency.. In your situation i would certainly find great appeal in a simple 12x12 integrated tube amplifier. Also if you find more watts it will also provide incredible sound.. Still with 12wpc and even a few less or more with all proper functioning units all speakers(networks etc..), amplifier and playback machine of your choice aprox 12x12 watts will offer so great of sound. Very ample. Just helping open the possibilities to more to get the best of experience each listen you have... Cheers

  9. I am a fan of Fisher. Back in the day they were considered top shelf, and equal in price to McIntosh. Today, the gear is less expensive by a wide margin. If you are looking for a receiver rather than preamp-amp, then look at the 500C and 800C models. They are the flagships, unless I am mistaken. Lots of good data on them, and they will at least hold their value if they don't go up in value.

  15. I just bought 4 KP-201A's from which I have restored two into perfect condition. The two I have left have 1 missing woofer, 1 wrong (Eminence branded) woofer, a blown squaker, 1 missing grille, and a blown tweeter. I want to get these two speakers restored, but I'm not sure to do about the missing parts. The woofs should be K-24-K's, and the tweeter should be a K-76-K, and the squaker should be a K-53-K. I plan on making a new grille using one I have as a template. I would like to find 4 good black and white Klipsch badges if I can find them for not too much. BTW, these speakers sound fantastic!

  16. Selling my Klipsch P37s, P27, and P17s to upgrade to a larger model. Let me know if you are interested. Pretty firm on price, given I am asking 40% pre-taxes of what I paid for everything. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/ele/4436558133.html No affiliation. No photos is a bit disappointing.

  21. This is definitely one of the more respectable forums out there and my favorite. I use other forums as well for information on different equipment etc but this one even through it's bad times seems more like a small family. We fight and argue but ultimately circle back to whats important and help each other learn. I don't think this was a bad thread at all and ended well.

  22. ". . . test bad" I don't need no stinkin' tests. I can cram for urine tests, but I can't test capacitors. The $50 figure is for all caps on the 706 HDMI board. I figure that once inside, replace them all. The parts cost is relatively low. The time expenditure is high. Some threads and videos reference a dozen caps that fail causing the problem. I figure that heat affects them all, so replace them all at once, rather than going at it piecemeal . Other than a fan, I'll do nothing to the 707. It is truly brand new. Without a fan it should go for years before exhibiting the same symptoms, if it ever does. With a fan, I expect it will outlive me. I'll let you know how it goes.

  23. The newer reference xo lower than the older did and the horn does more of the midrange then it use too. Like a Cornwall 3 xo is 800hz for the midrange I think. And the rf7ii horn xo is 1250. So they are pretty close and might be why to my ears the rf7ii sound very similar to my Cornwalls.

  24. Ah ha i see. Yeah there was one i dont know which model though identical at a local shop. It was also $500 about december of 2013...i agree completely...a disappointment. That said. When all said and done. My 2 18's topple over everything i'v heard with ease. In a bit of a small room of course although let alone you and others scrappy with 4 18's. I mean theres nowhere to go. Ready for life til end of time lol i know just my 2 radians my whole sub system is valued very high although can be found so reasonbly in cost. Let alone near a hundred other great choices that are equal and cost so little. Diy is the only choice anymore point blank. nothing plug and play outta box even compares

  29. I set all my speakers as large.. Even the La Scalas. ;-) Why? I was told to set all speakers to small to make it easier on your AV and let the subs do what they were meant to do.

  31. Ehehr, welcome to the forum. Though something from the Reference line is what interested me with Klipsch. Heresies were the first Klipsch I purchased, I know power them with a H.H.Scott 222c which is a wonderful sounding amp. What do you know, there is a fellow Klipsch forum member selling something right here no the forum. I don't know what your price range is but here is a good one. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/149526-hh-scott-lk72-nos-valves-rebuild/ I haven't heard the Fisher units myself, but I garrantte you can trust Boxx, and MG on their recommendations for a good product. Good luck with the search and have fun, there is alot to learn around here, along with great deals none the less.

  33. Although the Audyssey people and most other experts recommend "SMALL" and 80 Hz, on the grounds of allowing higher resolution correction of the sub, a little more headroom in your main channels, and less of a chance of phase problems, TRY all settings for a prolonged period each, to see what you prefer. These would include all possible combinations. With "LARGE," LFE + Main will send the soundtrack music to both your main speakers and to the sub, which can probably go lower than your main speakers (even big ones). There may or may not be audible phase cancellation, or uneven response. The LFE will be sent to your sub only, as long as you select "Sub On," which is as it should be. Selecting "LARGE" without LFE + Main may turn your subwoofer off. Put your ear down there and listen. Now, the regular crossover to the sub (the one that probably should be set at 80 Hz), is different than the LPF for LFE that some AVRs have. Audyssey's founder Chris has stated that he wishes that NO AVR provided this latter choice. LPF for LFE means Low Pass Filter for Low Frequency Effects. The ONLY correct setting for this, if you want to hear what the filmmakers did, is 120 Hz. The filmmakers send LFE up to 120 Hz through your AVR's subwoofer output to the sub. So, try various combinations, knowing that the Audyssey, THX, and professional standards are: all speakers SMALL, crossovers for Front, Center, and Surround set to 80 Hz (unless Audyssey determines that an even higher crossover should be used), and LPF for LFE (if any) set to 120 Hz.

  35. Im a big fan of this. Try it one way for a week or longer then change it. You will know right away if its missing something or if its as good or better. This is a perfect example of why a/b different settings or gear right back and forth is flawed imo. We need to learn the sound before we can hear small changes in it. Big changes we can hear right away but these small tweaks need a little more time imo. At least this is how it is for me

  36. If you have a capable sub, set all the satellites to small. This will decrease the chances of phase issuse with the mains and avoid cancellation issues. Setting the speakers to SMALL mean the avr has full bass management control. Setting the speaker to LARGE means no bass management or quasi-bass management. The setting of Large or Small has nothing to do with the size of the speaker, it is based on the speakers LF extension. Using LFE+Mains result in an overlap of bass around the sub LPF, this can results in boomy bass. To truely be a large speaker, it should have a 15 in. woofer or two 12 in. woofers. There can be less bass produce when the mains are let to Large. One of the most important things to get good bass in a room is location, location, location of the bass unit. The sub can be optimally placed. It is hard to move the mains around the room. Also with the redirected bass, the sub output should increase. Power management is also a factor, and sending all the bass and LFE to the sub can give the satellites and extra 3-5 db for an enhanced midrange. OK, enough of my yada, yada, yada. I still set my RF 7's as small.

  37. Sancho said exactly what I was going to recommend. It's all preference. Some like the sound of large because they sound more full, while others like the sound of small because they say it adds clarity. Try both and let your ears be the judge

  39. Hats off to you my friend indeed. I had a kg surround sound system at about 20 years of age. I never new klipsch even had another speaker other than the kg.5 at that point. Wow i cannot count the times i went through speakers nib...I really cannot, only to fall back on what i knew worked The Kg .5(i have to LOL at myself). Now 20 years later i have found the holy grail in audio. If you are 26 like your stats state..very nice to see you with a great start. I see you in a venture that as like what youthman is taking at the moment and indulging with heritage or the like with klipsch. Especially if you get the music tingle in your ear hairs. Cheers! ill be 28 next month and trust me I'd have two vintage khorns in my living room if my wife approved but for now the rf7iis will remain. I would guess it will be easier to get palladiums cosmetic wise she thinks they are nicer looking but I plan to get at least two heritage speakers for my garage 2 channel setup tho summer. Maybe some Cornwallis. Going to epoxy my floor then it will be ready.

  42. While having my second cup and listening to the words to Tommy by The Who on CNBC I wondered if the words would have to be altered to reflect the zeitgeist or politically correct environment of today? The line "that deaf, dumb, and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball"......would that now read "that hearing impaired, vocally challenged, visually impaired adolescent sure plays an aggressive pinball and always shares with his team mates". Doesn't really roll off the tongue now does it? X 2
