Thanks Paul, I wasn't too concerned with the resistors, they are wire wound ceramic. These speakers were used for background music all there lives. never pushed....well, that will change of course now that they are in my home/system, we'll see how they do 😆. I will keep you and our friends informed. The caps are now sitting in an Amazon facility that is only a half hour drive from my home!, yet they are saying it will still take 3 days to get here. Think I need to make a phone call .5 points

Nice, I love my Hammond organ/Leslie. Such a sweet sound, the perfect blues/jazz/rock/reggae instrument, it just fits in everywhere! Ok, just a couple update photos from moments ago (it is all connected to vinyl in some way ). The quality of these speakers shows in a number of ways. The 12" woofers are NOT screwed into the MDF rim, but machine screws into T nut hardware, NICE! The second shot is of the USA made banana to spade jumpers for the screw terminals on the rear panel. More in a bit.4 points

That’s there’s funny. Ain’t a speaker he’s not an expert on. I heard rumor that prior to the passing of James B Lansing he had the foresight to name his famous tweeter “001”. Coincidence, I think not -4 points

I ordered the Woodpecker with just has the basic 12” Thomas Schick arm. This set up has been great with my Charisma Audio, Signature One cartridge. If I ever get the bug to tweak this set up, it would be to maybe swap the TS for a Kuzma, 4Point arm.3 points

Where do you know from that she visited me last evening ? She picked up the Album " Dare " from Human League out of my collection 😁3 points

Actually, if you place them side by side, wired to a speaker selector with level adjustments, a person can compare them. Just like any other speakers.3 points

Good luck with the upgrade project The crossover looks simple enough and the new components should give the speakers a new lease on life - however in my experience I need to advise - don’t overlook the resistors3 points

I was awaiting my new caps, and probably because of the floods etc. in the south, my latest tracking showed a delay from today to SUNDAY! So, sadly, the speaker project will be on hold for a bit longer. Just took these two photos as they sit on my kitchen island. These are the SuperScope S-212 from 1974 made in California, which are really in very nice shape all around considering they are 50 years old! My next featured play will be a TRIO of Linda Ronstadts Nelson Riddle arrangement recordings, probably on Sunday after these gems get the crossover caps installed . Lower photo shows the crossover with it's large axial cap sitting in it's metal holder. They will stay in place, and the new ones will be installed and ty-wrapped to them to keep things original.3 points

Hello Paul and friends! Hope you are staying dry, cool or warm depending on where you are. Here in the NE, slushy snow on the ground, temps have gone from single numbers to 40 degrees F. and will be higher with rain over the next few days.. Needless to say, foggy day here! Anyway, I fell in love with the silicone mat I picked up some time ago for the REGA P6 table, so I ordered a second one for the U-Turn and that just arrived. Here is a photo just taken. I will spin some vinyl on it soon. But right now, waiting for my Amazon delivery of some special capacitors for my newest speaker/ crossover restoration. More photos to share in a bit. Enjoy the music !3 points

It’s been at my house too. My two youngest boys and I were the last to get it and it’s been dragging us down since last weekend. I can tell they are feeling better. Instead of being flopped on the couch this morning they were sitting up playing Pokémon.2 points

Just dropped some "Whiskey Blues" over in the youtube spinning thread. 3 hours of bliss so far. Fire it up. At about the 53 minute mark some dude just fired up the B3 along with some keys. Smoooooth brother!2 points

I have a good friend in Phoenix that has a set of those and has had them for close to 30 years now. Those things are the shiznit and love being played on a big Mac 2300. We tripped a house breaker one night jamming, maybe 1996 or so, and that amp was just coasting. I still remember it to this day.2 points

And the 19's also weren't designed to be a public address speaker from the back of a train for PWK's buddy Winthrop Rockefeller. Both have their goods and bads and a place in history.2 points

I'm not promising anything but he is one of the most knowledgeable people I know in the industry about speaker repair. More so than the rabid cheerleader at this forum. Take Dave with a grain of salt as he doesn't sugar coat anything. lol2 points

I just cleaned mine the other day so took the liberty of pushing my luck by powdering my last grind. Welllll, it didn't over flow the filter but my "clean" light is on again. Livin on the edge!1 point

And Wendy (Walter) Carlos used Cornwalls hanging from chains in her studio. That means nothing. For a while certain engineers/producers liked Yamaha NS10s, too.1 point

We have caliche here in Vegas, so they build up a base of caliche then add an inch or two of sand and compact the hell out of it with a machine compactor.1 point

Keep your eye out. They pop up quite often on the usual sites. I have a pair that is as close to mint as you can get that I would part with if you’re close to Indiana.1 point

I really like the idea of these simple filters. I am using ALK ES400/5800 and I like it, but I keep wandering how much I all the components affects the sonics. I am using Solen caps in the XO. With all the components, upgrading to highend caps will cost as much as a new car! I have had some communication with at dealer of some highend comression drivers, and his opinion confirms exactly what you are writing about detail in the music through a simple first order filter. Greg, I see the basics, but any chance you can print the schematics for your XO.1 point

This may be a well covered subject, but I still allow myself to ask you guys; My speakers are DIY Khorns with Alkeng ES400/5800 xo's, trachorns and recently upgraded with the Fostex T500AmkII tweeters. They sound magnificent and I am very pleased with the way the system present any kind of music. So, why this question? The tweeter upgrade made a huge difference, and I can not help myself from asking; Is there a midband compression driver out there that will cover 400hz-5800khz better than the K55V? I have for a while considered the insanely prized GOTO drivers, but neither of them can cover this particular frequency range, so I would have to rebuild the entire system from the bass bins and up. And then it would not be a complete Khorn anymore. So - is there such driver with sensitivity >104 db and known to be significantly better than the K55V - I would like to know - cost no object!1 point
-
Thank you for the nice comments. Coming from you guys, it means a lot. sunnysal: I have not changed the midband driver. Still using K55V in the trachorns. I find the K55V an extreemely good driver that will stand it's ground against most alternatives on the market. However, I am considering one of the GOTO midband compression drivers as the next upgrade. They are supposed to be the best there is? What's holding me back is the massive prizetag and the acces it so limited that I will not get the upertunity the try them out. Last time I checked, they asked $5900 a pair, and that was for the least expensive alternative!!! Daddy Dee: The frequency curve for the Fostex is almost flat down to 5000hz, and then starts to roll off slightly before it dives when it comes under 4000hz. Yes, the ES5800 cut the frequency at 5800 with a very steep sloop. Even though the Fostex plays down to 4000hz, It is reccomended from the manufactorer that the xo rolloff with a conventional curve, is around 7000hz. This is mainly to protect the driver. Lower frequency=higher potential for damage. I communicated with Fostex, and they confirmed that with a steep curve that cuts right below 5800, there is no problem. best Erland1 point
