  3. That room will need some serious attention. Reminds me of about 25 years ago. I broke up with my girlfriend and moved into a new house. It had a large 26 X 16 room with suspended hardwood floors. All I had was a loveseat and my equipment and rack. Looked very similar to your room. The first time I fired the system up I cringed at the sound. I knew I had work to do.

  4. Yea, Mancuso is a good one but Imma outta space! Local guy moved to Nashville years ago and he plays finger style. He spends all kinds of time playing in Europe and has quite the following.

  6. They are all fantastic. If you would like to check out the next generation of OMG guitarists. Make it you business to take a look at Matteo Mancuso. Players like Di Meola and Vai are all stunned by this kid. Check him out on YouTube. His style of playing is just incredible. Classic finger picking on electric guitar.

  8. This is the first time I have used an amp with output meters. 2 watts with 5 watt peaks is loud enough where the neighbors might hear. A 30 watt amp is probably enough for most everyone. I used to believe differently, but the meters don't lie.

  11. With tube amps, a 4-ohm speaker on the 8-ohm tap will run the tubes out of current before they hit their minimum voltage. This won't give you max power, but also won't put the tubes in a fundamentally bad state. Load line comes out the top of the curves. an 8-ohm speaker on the 4-ohm tap will (at full power) run the tubes down to their minimum voltage with current capability to spare. Load line comes out the left side of the curves. This is when the screen grids start to conduct heavily. It's possible to torch your tubes like that. Again, this is in a max-power situation, probably (hopefully!) more applicable to guitar amplifiers than HiFi. I feel a good rule-of-thumb is to match the tap on the amplifier with the actual lowest impedance that happens in the bass region. If that means a 4-ohm woofer is being used, use the 4-ohm tap and it should keep your amp happy. Power drops off as frequency goes up, so the midrange impedance peak on your speakers would still keep the actual load line in the middle of the map.

  13. Only the ones that have not been taught to speak. A lady is walking down the street to work and sees a parrot in a pet store. She stops to admire the bird. The parrot says to her, "Hey lady, you are really ugly." Well, the lady is furious! She storms past the store to her work. On the way home she saw the same parrot in the window and the parrot upon seeing her says, "Hey lady, you are really ugly." She was incredibly ticked now. The next day on the way to work she saw the same parrot and once again it said, "Hey lady, you are really ugly." The lady was so furious that she stormed into the store and threatened to sue the store and have the bird killed. The store manager apologized profusely and promised the bird wouldn't say it again. The next day, when the lady walked past the store after work the parrot said to her, "Hey lady." She paused, scowled with an icy and deadly stare, and said with a hoarse voice, "Yes?" The bird, strutting back and forth on its perch in a cocky manner, said, "You know."

  14. If they sound okay, I would not, yet. There is at least one member here who still uses those types of caps in his 1963(8?) Khorns. He said that they measure in spec and sound fine. Can you post pictures or state what the drivers are? From that info, you might be able to swap out the whole networks so you can AB them and maybe hear if they need recapped. (wish you were close, I have a few networks you could try)

  16. It just sounds amazing on the electric. Matteo grew up with a Father who is a classical guitarist. He saw his Father playing in that style and always thought that all guitars were played that way so that's how he started playing.

  17. Idontknow, I did enjoy the review and the passion for our hobby, always nice to share. I too have a ST-70 and it is stock, I enjoy playing it. In comparing it to your ST-70 it's easy to see how modified it is including the solid-state rectifier. The important thing is you are enjoying it. I agree with The Dude on doing a vintage-to-vintage comparison and I would suggest the Mc 240, instead of the Mc 275, which is closer to the ST-70s output capability. Disclaimer: I have Mc 240s and Mc 30s and have yet to hear any modified ST-70 that I would prefer. I'm willing to learn. The ST-70 Hafler circuit is pretty amazing but the McIntosh circuits with the Unity Coupled transformers are the ones that make me happy - thanks.

  24. My switch solution: Cordinate Designer On/Off Switch Plug, 6 Ft Braided Power Cord, 3 Prong, Slip Resistant Base, purchased from Amazon for $13. The switch assembly consists of: plug, cord and switch. The plug is standard 3-prong, and can be inserted into a wall outlet or power strip. It has some built-in electronics and an outlet for plugging in the device to be switched on/off. The 6 foot cord carries low voltage to a small weighted disc containing a micro switch. The disc can sit on your desk or table, or even be wall mounted. The micro switch triggers a relay in the plug that supplies power to whatever is plugged into it. The switch assembly is rated at 125VAC/8A/1000W/60Hz.

  25. I'm not sure if this will work, so please bare with me. I had trouble logging in so I found one of my old post to reply to. Life got busy with opening up a cabinet business and I didn't make too many changes to my system. I also haven't been in contact with the good friends and people on this Forum that helped me out with my modifications. I may mention names later. I'm finally going to get into Dolby Atmos and purchased a different processor to do so. Also getting ready to buy some different equipment. Next purchase will be the Magnetar UPD-800 Blu-ray player. I have been trying to purchase some Klipsch Cinema Surround speakers, but I'm having trouble finding a dealer. I have to search a little harder. I'm thinking of the KPT-12-VB, KPT-8-VB, Kpt-1200-VBM . I need 2 surrounds, and I might use them for 4 ceiling mounted Atmos speakers. Have to see what kind of frequency response is actually sent to the those Atmos channels. With these changes I'm going to sell 2 pairs of LaScalas , 1 pair of Klipschorns. The Klipschorns are stock, they used to be my benchmark speaker that I used when modifying other speakers. I havent listened to them in years. The LaScalas are my front and rear height speakers which I can't use as surrounds and ceiling speakers. I'll probably list these in the Garage sale section one of these days before going to eBay. That's all I'm going to say for now. I want to see if this reply post. Then I'll try starting a new one. I have to search the members list to see if some of the old timers like me are still active here. May have to change my old pass word, and email address. Q-Man

  27. It depends on the horn. The K700 is a lot less apt to need damping vs the K400. Which horn are you thinking about needing damping material? There have been many threads about this. Since there are so few remaining members who can help with this, I would google it to get a lot more info.

  29. Suns up and coffee's good here in Duckburg today. Hope yours is on target too. Thoughts of trying Red Bull or Moster's about 15 years ago until I took a sip of one. That was a no brainer. Right back to coffee and I still don't understand how anyone could drink one of those things. Blah! Temps spiking up again now for a few days. Won't be long. Time to get those March Madness brackets to work. With me, that falls right into place along side winning the lottery. May as well throw the money in your "Cuss" jar and buy Jubes. People around here are smiling since Ohio State tabbed 37 year old Jake Diebler as their new head hoops coach. I think it was a great move for both. I balled with his dad and two two uncles years ago. Both of his uncles worked with me for years. The entire family is great. His dad is a high school teacher and coach, Jon his younger brother played for OSU and Jake was an assistant coach so that's the connection. Jake played but spent all of his time learing the game from his dad and college coaches. A refreshing move for OSU, which has always been known as the "football school." We'll see but I guarantee he's gonna ball out in Cbus. Maybe I should change it up to tea but that's doubtful. A bag in a spoon to squeeze it out? I'd hurt myself. Leaves in the bottom of the mug to drink? Sounds like a pita to me. I'll just keep looking for coffee grounds when I pour. I'll make it. Maybe. Have a good one!

Stand at first position and wait to press play. If you listen to it first. You will ruin your own surprise. Here's to wishing you the best! ...and you are welcome.🫠

  33. Unfortunately many speaker companies don't follow that. Just one example from a well know company "Impedance: 8 ohms nominal, 3.1 ohms minimum." And the summary from independent measurements "Although technically this is an 8 ohm design, I think it should be used with amplifiers that are comfortable with 4 ohm loads." Where minimum impedance is and the phase angle are also important considerations.

  37. Dtel - You're right. Some products just stand out. It's almost like a sirens song - drawing you closer to ****** the cash outta your wallet. :D As an aside, I think it's awesome how you involved the fam. with the speaker auditioning process. etc - It's good to see a P-39f's owner. As for Harman International: Their methodology isn't much better. Sure, they level match, use a better switching interface, and hire employees who are trained to pick up on non-linear frequency behavior - but when you get right down to it - their conveyer belt is nothing more than a line of speakers that are connected to a singular component system. Now, if you're looking to design a fantastic all-around loudspeaker, then this is a great way to help you achieve that goal. But that testing methodology won't give you a true understanding of what the competition brings to the table. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure those Revel speakers sound way better than everything else on their conveyer belt. A fact that Harman proudly demonstrates every time somebody drops by for a listen. But... what do you think would happen if they took those Martin Logans, B&W's, and Maggies off of that conveyor belt and put them in a proper listening space? Heck... let's up the ante and find the best position for those speakers within a room and then connect them to equipment that best suits their character. Hmm. Methinks those Revels will no longer be a unanimous visitor favorite. Anyway, maybe I'm bias. I've put a lot of time into reviewing Hi-Fi gear, and one of the first things I've learned is that you should never purposefully disadvantage anything when comparing one product to another. I firmly believe that before you pass supreme judgement on a Hi-Fi component, you should get to know it's idiosyncrasies and then cater to it's needs to the best of your ability. Then, and only then, will you get a solid idea of what it, and other components like it, bring to the table.

  38. The KHorns are no joke. Anybody here think I could convince Klipsch to ship out a pair to me for review? Bhaha. Now THAT is a joke. Anyhoo, I confess that I've participated in numerous 'side by side' comparisons throughout my Hi-Fi journey; be it at my abode, at different abodes, or at manufacturer facilities. My general take away from these events is that they are a fun way to get a round-about idea as to how each product performs. Is this demo methodology good enough to draw up definitive conclusions? Hell naw. That's OK though. If you have a good time and walk away from the experience with a greater sense of knowledge, then that's all that matters. I'm glad that some of you had a chance to rock out in Hope. It looked like a whole bunch of fun.
