  1. - just thinking, Mikey, You've got a pretty good support network here, so I'm wondering if you're throwing out Baby with the bath water. Anyway, it's your decision with some tough choices to make. Remember the Eagles lyrics 'don't let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy' Ride it out, buddy, make good choices and know we love you, Hamish
  2. Nice little thread and link, Speedball, Thanks. Relics of the Cold War that are being preserved and restored. Way back in the college days, our neighbours downstairs kept on complaining about our stereos being too loud. (I had double Advents and a quad HK 900 - my roomie had ESS Heils and a Marantz 1120). Anyway, after months of bickering with them, our buddy Roger, showed up in his Ford Cortina pulling a small trailer. He was able to get the rig into the back yard nice and tight against the house. It was a smaller version of the sirens shown in the link - about the size of a modern generator. The horn section was just a huge open box on the one end. The whole thing sat on a huge metal plate. He was able to use a pull rope to start the engine and then it would fill some kind of pressure tank. After a few minutes, the siren would start with this really low pitch that increased in volume and would start to climb. This thing was so loud that we wussed out and he released the air through some kind of valve and it stopped. Our ears would have bled if it had done the whole cycle - probably broken some windows too. Anyway, we ended up down at the hotel, and later, Roger left with the siren. Never knew where he got it or why he had it - but that was an interesting day.
  3. ya'know Scooter, we've got the same problem right up here where the lumber comes from. Now you've got me going too.... There's two lumberyards in town. They're both owned by contractors who keep the good stuff and sell the cheap stuff at top dollar. I won't even shop here - prefer to go up to Cobden and strap the lumber to my roof rather than buy it here in town Here's a couple of examples - right here in town - they were hosing down with water skids of pressure treated lumber. When you would get the lumber home - within a day it would be like pretzels. . And the same place - if you're not there in person to select each piece of framing lumber, they will 'give' (you're still paying top dollar) for the rejects left on the top of the pile. Right now, up in Pembroke, about 30 miles away, they are building a Home Depot and I'm hoping it'll smarten these local outfits up.
  4. Merry Christmas to you love_hertz and all the other Klipschters out there. Slainte Mhath. Hamish
  5. mmm... close to me ...5 hours to go....reserve still not met....mmm.....I'll watch it.... thanks Mikey
  6. I was in Edmonton at the time. It was already night and I had been out picking up a gag sign for my brother's wedding in Toronto on the coming weekend. The fm rock station was still on when I entered my apartment and the disc jockey announced that there was a report that John Lennon had been shot. Then they played "Imagine". After that, they announced he was dead. John Lennon was cheated. The rest of his life was stolen away. In our minds, he is still 'forever young' . RIP John Lennon and Thank You. Slainte Hamish
  7. I won a t-shirt!!! Thank you Mr. Thebes and the twins (sigh) where ever they may be. I've sent you an email. Next dram is to you. ....and if you're being led to a conundrum, check out the fees. They really inflate conundrum fees like grass cutting, garbage pickup and maintenance....just kidding. ......this little contest really adds to the feeling of community here on the forum. If there are out of pocket expenses to keep it going, here's an alternative idea. Maybe a winner's page could be added to the forum, where the winner's handle and their choice of music could be posted. Every week, this would be added to so in the long run, it would be an interesting list of music and members. Then possibly, Klipsch could kick in one measly lil set of zebrawood Khorns as a raffle for the names listed once a year. Slainte. Hamish
  8. edit - sorry - the pdf was handbuilt Lascala cabinets by cueman - not the extended bottoms. Hamish
  9. wow! ebay can be a scarey place. Learned something today. Thanks for the post and replys. Hamish
  10. Welcome to the forum, Geoffry. Nice to have someone else from Oz dropping in. Your list of ht gear sounds impressive. I've got the earlier RF3 fronts, RC3 centre and RS3 surrounds (and Axiom rear centre) mated up to a Yamaha 1300 receiver for quite awhile now and am really pleased with the overall sound quality. I was running it mostly for movies, but recently have been playing some dts encoded audio CDs like Sheryl Crow's Globe Sessions - whole new dimension again in 6:1 discrete. Enjoy your system and stay in touch here on the forum. Audio enjoyment is subjective, a matter of personal taste and lots of fun. Here on the forum, you'll find a great sense of community and pick up interesting tips on setups, music, and meet people with similar interests. Here in the Valley, we say 'g'day' as well. Take care. Hamish
  11. Your post will bring us Crown lovers out of the woodwork. I've got some vintage Crown equipment here - IC 150 pre-amps, DC300A power amps,a VFX2 crossover, OC meter bridge and switching unit and a few things that come and go. Vintage Crown is built in the good ole USA, built like a tank, and just the fact that it is available to you is a testament to it's build quality ( try to find a phase linear 700 from that era). Crown will repair vintage equipment. I've dealt with Crown directly in Elkhardt, Indiana on repairing the crossover. They were able to bring it back to original specs, and ship it back to me in Canada for less than $150. I've got one DC300A that's been in use since I got in 1976. So if you're looking for vintage ss equipment that's going to be around for the long haul without the pricey mac price tags, Crown is a good way to go. As for the pre-amp being bright - audio is a matter of personal preference and taste. If it sounds good to you, go for it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Hamish
  12. Sorry for being late with a contribution. Thanks for taking care of this, Bob. Hamish
  13. Welcome to the forum, Heiney. Older Crown amps and Heritage get a good run here. They're both in for the long haul. 30 years coming up on one DC300A. Here's a pix of the front parlour setup.
  14. cute l'il Margo Timmins and the rest of the Cowboy Junkies (including her husband) with the "Early 21st Century Blues". Hamish

  17. ditto to st. patrick - well said - Bruce, Barbara and family, I hope and pray you find support, love, laughter and hope in each other, with family, friends (yes -even us) through this chapter of your lives. As for faith, it's an open book - never-ending. You all take care. Hamish
  18. How about 'The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' and their first 'Quilt' album. I was listening to this back in the early '70's along with the Marshall Tucker Band, Poco, and early Eagles ('On the Border' era). The Ozark Mountain Daredevils had a real down home good time country\bluegrass twang mixed up with a little Owsley pharmaceutical aberration to the lyrics - n.b. -'Chickentrain'. "If You Want to Get to Heaven, You Gotta Raise a Little Hell' was the main track from the album. So true And don't forget the Outlaws with their good ole boy screaming dual lead guitars in 'Green Grass and High Tide' - mmmm - could this be something very subliminal buried deep within the title that suggests alternate approaches to facing reality? Got that blistering through the Cornwalls right now. yee-haw! .Still fun to listen to. Hamish
  19. Nice thread, We need a smile this week, anyway this find could almost be considered a laugh. Over the past couple of years, I've found a few pawn shop and flea market bargains - like the Marantz scope tuner for $45, the Crown OC 150 meter bridge for $20 and most recently, there's a post somewhere here about the KEF's from Value Village. Anyway, getting back on topic here, seeing the topic is bargain turntables - about a week ago I found a Bose turntable for $10 - yes - Bose turntable and cartridge. Knock me over with a feather. Who ever thought that Blose even made a turntable? It was such an oddball item that it was hard to resist. Apparently, it's an early '70's belt drive semi-automatic about the size of a Thorens. It came with a Audio Technica cartridge with a good needle. The belt was gone, but I had one from an old Sansui that was just the right fit - so stuck it on, balanced the arm and dug out the old Yes albums. Everything works but not a whole lot of hydraulic arm damping left, so let's see............didn't they make a receiver way back then too?...........gotta get me one of those............and that pair of 501's didn't look too shabby either other than the foam rot..................and maybe I'll get a set of those 901's or even six for the ht, and what about those nifty little swivel speakers.............let's see................get rid of some of these big black things up here....................gotta have bose.......................pinch me..............this is a bad dream................slainte! Hamish
