  1. Looks like oiled oak's from 89 alright. Mine are also oiled oak but are II's, hmm...... I have 2 old receivers gathering dust right now, a Kenwood KR-8010 & Sansui 7900Z. Rummage sale bargains - wish I could get some use out of them tho. I may have to get back out there today and look for some deals - the wife needs a pair of big ol' end tables if I can find some, preferably in natural birch ply! N.P. Nuthin yet, not allowed this early per the boss!
  2. Hello Chicago! Good score there. I probably would not change anything right now, those Forte's don't need much for power. You can try to search the archives here for add'l info on Forte's and amp/receivers. I don't think you'll find too much difference between the Forte & Forte II. You can find out specs on those here too. Do you have any clue what year those are? There should be inspection tags on the rear with a code #, which tells you the year, style, finish, etc. Will these be used for music only, or part of a home theater system? I have vinyl that sounds very nice thru my II's - and you don't need to crank on the bass & treble to get it! I'd probably just polish those babies up and enjoy them as is for awhile - and you may be content with just that!

  4. Hmm......the only space I have available would be for a set of 1974 Albino Cornwalls. 2nd choice would be for any other year Cornwalls. I heard my first pair back in '79 and later passed up a pair of 87's in 1990. Looking back , I just didn't get it - I was a real stingy s.o.b.   5. I am surprised to see just 4 screws/fasteners holding the woofers to the motorboard. How do you know when 4 is enough, 3 would not be, and 5 is overkill? It must be the weight, cause the horn needs 8! Inquiring mind wants to know! Dale
  6. Pair of 1989 Forte II in oiled oak. Excellent condition with boxes. $300 in March 2000. Pair of 1986 Heresy II in walnut in Fair-to-Good condition for $150 in August 2000. Both pair were local newspaper listings and a 1/2 hour drive to pick up. Dale NP - ZZ Top Sixpack
  7. GOLDEN EARRING - Moontan (1973) The well-known classic with Radar Love, which broke G.E. into the american mainstream. (Still together today !) You can get this and most of their other output on the 2002 CD remasters, which sound very good. MIDNIGHT OIL - 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 (1983) The recording which broke the Aussies in America. Didn't hit big til Diesel & Dust, but you can't go wrong with aggressive vocals, great guitar, bass, & drums throughout. Guaranteed to raise your blood pressure and cause excessive sweating. MOTLEY CRUE - Too Fast For Love (1982) A great sounding LP, which was their first. Pick up the recent autobiography from your local library for an interesting read. QUEEN - Queen II (1974) I hated this LP the first time I heard it back in 74. Probably ahead of it's time - this album is chock full of great tunes and can really rock out. SCREAMING BLUE MESSIAHS - Gun-Shy (1986) 15 years ago I heard that David Bowie thought this was 86's best release of the year. Rockabilly punk with drums, bass, and lead. Big hit was "I Wanna Be a Flintstone" on 87's "Bikini Red". I am still bummed that they broke up after 3 LP's. SUICIDAL TENDENCIES - Debut (1982) Independent Frontier Records release - hilarious speed punk/thrash that was just dying to get out. THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND - Collection (1986) Double LP containing 20 of their greatest hits from the early 70's. A lyrical delight from the bizarro world of Alex Harvey. 2002 CD remasters have just been issued and should be purchased immediately. I don't buy vinyl much anymore, but i did pick up 15 Columbia 1/2 speed and Mfsl lp's at a rummage sale. Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, LRB, & Jim Croce, etc. (No rock n roll stuff, tho - darn!). My metro area of 150,000 people has 1 record shop and they are not doing well.

I have 4 of the KB series, and no one should be disappointed if they like these bands: Deep Purple from 1976 (altho I prefer Gillan on vocals vs Coverdale on this one) Triumph from 1981 Uriah Heep from 1974 Robin Trower from 1977. Other good listens are the popular BBC Radio 1 live concerts featuring these vintage bands: Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Robin Trower, Michael Schenker, & Pat Travers. I'm glad these are available since I never got to see any of these bands perform live. So Sad!
  9. I picked this DVD up for my Valentine on, of course, Valentines Day this year. First off, it was not what I was expecting, but found it to be a pleasant surprise & very entertaining. I liked how they disected all the popular tunes and turned them into hilarious send-ups. I will never be able to listen to "Roxanne" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the same vein again.   10. The Wife made me take her to see it - I had high hopes for it, but came away somewhat disappointed. Story had holes in it, but there were some decent individual performances if you can keep track of everybody in the dark. Lots of tattoed, leather-clad, suck-heads killing each other off . The gore & violence index is turned up to eleven on this one. The s-u-r-r-o-u-n-d sound was amazing; choice of tunes so-so. Movie: c Sound: b

  12. Thanks for the update, Doug. I started thinking about those Tangents again and just wondered what sort of niche they were expected to fill. I saw a Tangent 20 on ebay and the first thing it reminded me of was a large Bose 301 - wood end panels stuck to a black box - yuck! Don't see many of these around and I can see why - black sheep of the family? .......gotta go read about more Klipsch stuff!
  13. Found some info here at the Klipsch website. The T50's are a 2-way speaker that was produced from 1989 - 1991 with a list price of $996. I heard that Tangents were sold to the Armed Forces personnel at military bases and weren't available at the regular sales outlets. I've never seen a Tangent in person, nor in advertisments, but they show up on auction occasionally. Good luck with the sale!
  14. Did you see that auction on ebay that ended recently? The seller claimed that his Signature Series Heresy's had upgraded wiring, crossovers, and finish. That pair in perfect condition went for $709.00! I think my pair might be worth more since they still have the original ARKANSAS "air" in them!! Hey SCORPIONS fans, check out the newly remastered "Taken By Force" re-issue - Superb!
  15. There is also a pair of 1979 HBR Heresy's for sale at Sound World in Appleton, Wisconsin. They were asking $350 3 weeks ago, and I saw them there again today. Some original paperwork is included. The finish is a golden yellow; probably a light stain and varnished, but don't quote me on that!
  16. dnd: Looks like you are situated right between Des Moines, IA and Chicago, IL. Keep checking the newspapers on-line and check with stereo shops in the area to see if they ever get Klipsch speaker trade-ins. I found my set of Forte's & Heresy's in local newspaper ads, 6 months apart, surprisingly within 30 miles of home and selling for half the going rate. I have the Cornwalls on my wish list but I am almost afraid to find a pair since I'll probably end up divorced. Good Luck to us all!
  17. Almost 17 year old speakers and they aren't broken-in yet? Way to go Conductor! That got me thinkin' again about the revised K-horns coming out - maybe next year now? It would be interesting to "hear" if you are satisfied and what your current room and equipment is.
  18. I have a pair of '86 H II's Signature Edition in oiled walnut, and as Doug stated, I see no difference except for the cane grill and emblem. I've never inspected the drivers to see if they were gold-plated or even if there is a prize inside the box. The only time I thought they sounded weak was when I switched them with my Forte's, but I will certainly have a place for them sometime down the road. (And you don't need quality amplification - they sounded super running off my toaster oven OR the hair dryer!)
  19. I gave a short preview of the RF-7's awhile back and got pounded on a little when I thought that there was something amiss with the sound. I believe that speakers at all price points should sound at least "good" whether they are powered by a York 8-track or table radio connected with tinsel or jumper cables. I actually had a similar combination back in the mid 80's with a pair of Boston Acoustics A150's ($500/pr floorstanders), and a Sound Design entertainment unit. I thought this combination played very well until I upgraded to a "real" 2 channel receiver. If the R series is heavily dependent on quality power, I think there may be less purchasers in the mix. There have certainly been many buyers of the complete Reference Series using a receiver in a home theater setup that are very satisifed with the sound as is. Right? (Coverdale/Page coming thru LOUD & CLEAR on quality Heritage Klipsch speakers!)

  21. I heard both the RF7's & RF3's today for the first time. Let me first state that I currently run a pair of 89' Forte II's in my 2 channel music only system in a 11 x 18" basement room. As the wife and I entered the approx 20 x 25' dealer listening room, the Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" concert dvd was playing thru a pair of RF3's. We both thought it was too loud, but I also had the feeling that something wasn't quite right. The balance controls on the new Denon 4802 (on sale @ $2000) were set to flat, so I turned it down and looked for some sales help to hear the RF7's (on sale @ $1550)in the other corner. I picked out Disturbed's "The Sickness" and was waiting to be blown over, but I heard a similarity to the RF3's - a somewhat muddy & congested sound. There was not much of a soundstage and short on dynamics. I came home and played the same track and there was no comparison - Forte's rule in my setup. This is not a fair comparison considering that the setup, equipment, room size, (break-in?),and positioning will make all the difference in the world. Btw, this dealer (American TV) still has some of the older KLF 20's, 30's and RP-5 speakers to get rid of. Effective today thru monday, their special family pricing is in effect for those in their 10 store area. I await further observations, reviews, and listening impressions!
  22. I'm posting for one of the guys who does not keep up with the Jones's. Heck, I'm the only guy in my neighborhood that doesn't have a riding lawn mower & and a snow blower! Purchased (used) in year 2000: Klipsch Forte II's (89's) Klipsch Heresy II's (86's - collecting dust right now) Monster Cable M-1 3m speaker cable (89's) Toshiba 2200 DVD Denon AVR 1800 Receiver Monster Video cable Total year 2000 expenditures: $1250.00 Purchased refurbed in Year 2001 (so far) CSW 5.1 Surrounds CSW centerstage Total outlay: $250.00 This equipment is spread among 2 systems: I listen to music, the better half is the video hound (altho the Rammstein Live Aus Berlin DVD is a hoot'n holler!) I have no plans to replace or upgrade unless something pops.
  23. Soundcraftsmen had a 20 page color ad in the October 89 issue of Audio magazine, listing all of their Made in USA Products such as amps, preamps, equalizers, and tuners. But in 1991, they kind of fell off the face of the earth after 22 years in the biz. As for the PCR800, this was the cheapest plain jane non-rack-mountable version of the Pre-Power Four amp. List price was approx $500 - $550. 205/watts per channel into 8 ohms, 300/watts into 4 ohms with .005% THD. Also featured MOSFET power output stages, probably comparable/similar to Hafler equipment. $75.00 be good!

They haven't made it to central Wisconsin yet, either, and my local electronics/furniture/appliance "dealer" says they won't be getting any until they get rid of their KLF-20 & 30's, and the RP-3 & 5's. I was in the store yesterday and every one of these Klipsch speakers were marked at full list price at this time (w/free financing).
  25. 1977 was the year I purchased the rest of my system components after starting my first real full-time job. A 1976 Technics turntable w/ADC cartridge for $150.00, a Kenwood KR-4070 (40 wpc) receiver for $200.00, a large pair of used Jensen 4-way speakers for $200.00, a Marantz cassette deck, and Koss Pro-AA headphones. I later added a $60.00 Radio Shack 5-band equalizer which helped balance the sound (blasting Van Halen, AC/DC, and Pink Floyd among others). I dumped the whole works once I decided to move west in late '79. Fast forward to the present and I'm back in my home state currently blasting Rammstein's "Mutter" on my '89 Forte II's. It's been a fun ride!
