  1. decisions... decisions... Another thought... Networks make a bigger difference than I first realized but I'd suggest you visit with Gothover and Greg928gts here on the forum about their wood horns. You don't have to make alterations to your cabinet unless desired. I just set mine on top... made the sweet spot WAY bigger and the sound stage seems well placed.
  2. I can't speak scientifically about this stuff... just my subjective experience. I started out with original ALK Cornwall networks (version 1) and listened to just about all kinds of music. I got the urge to tinker so I got a Fastrac from Gothover. I use the K-55 driver but I believe Gothover or someone built an adapter for the K-52. With the Fastrac, I wished I could play with attenuation with the midrange and/or tweeter but the original ALK didn't allow that. So, with more $ invested, I have listened for a couple of months now using the ES-5800 and AP12-500. (Going to to 500 hz is fine with the Fastrac horn... I'm told not to try 500 hz with the stock horn). Most of the time I have to keep my listening below 70 db because that is the threshold where I start to bother the family. With the original ALKs I could dial in the volume by ear and be very close to 70 db. With the ES and AP combo my youngest woke up and came in to ask me to turn it down. I was shocked to find that I was listening around 82-84 db! It isn't that these just sound good loud... it is just that it is hard not to turn it up! I don't know what they do to my brain but somehow those networks make me want to keep turning it up and UP! Just for fun, I picked up some stock B networks that had been upgraded with Sonicaps. I wanted to do this since I had actually never heard Cornwalls with the original networks and felt this would help me recalibrate my ears. I must say there ain't nothing wrong with the original networks and they sound nice with the Fastracs. However, I have found myself turning them down. Well, the ES/AP combo is going to another project soon so I ordered some Cornscala-wall networks. Give me a couple weeks to listen to the Cornscala-wall networks after they finally get here and I'll offer my comparison. I suspect I'll like them considering those who have been suggesting them! Being able to dial in the attenuation is a big plus.
  3. Very nice! What kind of wood is the face frame? Dovetail joints look so nice! [Y]
  4. What was that movie (western) where it seemed everybody was made a sheriff?
  5. Why does that seem normal and completely acceptable to me? I'm having trouble figuring out where I would keep them all, though.
  6. Oh yeah! I think I drove around with one of those hanging on my window! Hmmm... actually I think that the car belonged to my girlfriends' dad. Definitely not made by Klipsch.
  7. If I understand what you are asking... The short answer is that the Streamer II+ could not be used with the Squeezebox Touch. The Streamers only have USB input. The USB connection on the Squeezebox is for an external hard drive as a media source. The internal DAC on the Squeezebox isn't bad but you can use a DAC with the Squeezebox for improved sound. I used my VDAC via a SPDIF (toslink) connection to the Squeezebox for quite a while. It worked well but I sold it when I found that I was mainly getting to listen to "Veggietales" or the like on that system.
  8. Congratulations! You waited a LONG time! Welcome to the fun [Y]
  9. Excellent idea! Soldering really is pretty easy. I was shown how many years ago but didn't get too rusty after a 20 year lull. I think some visual aids would be good. Google brings up quite a bit of info. Check out the safety advice as well. Crimps! Why didn't I think of that?!
  10. Wow, Dean! Little did I know what you were going through while I had been pestering you with multiple PMs lately. Thank you for your help and advice! My prayers are with you.
  11. Because of all the mold you had I think you better consider a borate based treatment to prevent any future growth or dry rot problems. There are a bunch of products like this and some homemade recipes you can find online. Be sure to treat before adding a layer of 1/4 ply. This stuff works! I saved a 130 year old quilt chest that was starting to disintigrate before my eyes from dry rot. I didn't repair any of the damage... just stopped it from growing.

    Tuba HT

You better explain your plan before you hand your friend a length of tube. Of course, if you have a funnel and a picher of beer you will probably be ok.
  13. You're killin' me! Go buy 'em if they are in decent shape! They should sound great with Elton and REM! Later, when you get a bigger place you can sell them for what you have in them and get some Cornwalls.
  14. You make it sound like there are a lot of people like this. I'm glad to hear it! I know a few local craftsmen in other fields and met a few here for sure! It is hard not to be a cynic after my multiple experiences with hack rip off artists who take way too much pride in their lousy work. It feels good to know there are still good people out there who care and do good work! Buying this amp will be fun experience for you... just get it serviced soon and be picky. Wouldn't go wrong with Craig IMHO. That Scott will make you smile! good luck and have fun!
  15. Gothovers' Fastrac or Eliptrac for the mid horn... I've been pretty impressed with his fastrac on my Cornwalls. I've just been looking for that horn loaded bass but I'm hoping to stretch it a little lower. I don't want to mess with the design too much
  16. What would you change if you were building from scratch? If you were building clones as per HDBRbuilders' plans but wanted to include this modification what would you change or do differently? I've been thinking about this since I'll have access to an awesome shop and advice from a pro for a couple of months.
  17. Time for Three. Awesome talent! Awesome music! Not sure how long they have been around but they are pretty young. I'd never heard of them until a month ago. [Y]
  18. Groomlake gives excellent advice. Not only is the content of his advice very good but his presentation is very clear and concise. He has helped me a lot! Enjoy your Heresys Loudog and thanks Groomlake! [D]
  19. Craig beat me to it... the tube amps I have were worked on or built by him and are VERY VERY quiet! No hum or hiss whatsoever. The Scott 299 would be an excellent start and you are in the right price range. Rolling tubes is addictive but you could just put in some 12ax7 Telefunkens and be done with it. That is where I was happiest. This gets very subjective. Yes, I have heard SS with tighter bass but whatever "looseness" there is in the low end with the Scott is more than made up with all the rest (IMHO). Yes, it gets loud and sounds great all the way there! []
  20. Backup power is a necessity in my house due to the electric company failing to maintain power to the neighborhood. Power often goes out at random without warning but it doesn't just go off and stay off. It SLAMs off and on 2 or 3 times before it stays off for a while. Sometimes 5 minutes... sometimes an hour or more. I cannot imagine that those tubes would like that very much.
  21. I say go for it! Have fun! Provide pics! Just because someone wants to do something I wouldn't mess with doesn't mean that they shouldn't try. Even if a modification shows no improvement it would be nice to hear about. I am delighted with my HII to HIII upgrade and probably the best thing I could do is build a decent room to put them in. Talk about your hollow boxes... I've got a horrible sounding cube of a living room so these are bedroom speakers now. Keep having fun
  22. Awesome, Fly2Eat! [Y] Glad I could help you get them back into service! I think that T-amp might have some to do with the bass shyness. Even the Dayton 50 wpc version seems to be lacking in that department although I would still call it clear and clean sound. You might want to just enjoy the music for a while before you start messing around with upgrades... at least a couple of days or so.
  23. Awesome voice... I was just listening to "At Last!" at my desk last night.
