  2. Beautiful and thoughtful restoration. Why not have a prototype house build out 100 pre-amp boards and 200 amp replacement boards and a standard BOM using what you learned? I've often wondered why Mc doesn't do this as a restoration service....... Always a marketing guy........
  3. Yamaha fan I haven't tried it, but this one also gets good reviews. https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/yamas301bl-rb/yamaha-a-s301-2-ch-x-60-watts-integrated-amplifier-w/built-in-dac/1.html
  4. How old is the system ? All of the connections can be cleaned all of the controls can be cleaned Turn off the EQ in the software you are using I have had zero luck with the EQ software in the media players it probably requires a DSP or several DSPs to function correctly and the SW would have to be aware of the DSPs, from the DSP vendor. The unit has it's own amplifier, which can have problems like failing capacitors etc.....
  5. EQ is always an issue in any system or room The $200-500 solution Find a high quality 8-10 year old surround system like the Pioneer Elites, Pioneer or Onkyo Integra THX certified surround amps. 100W per ch is plenty. I passed on a 12 year old THX rated Integra the other day for $100, because I simply have no where to put it at this time. Unit was $1600 new and loaded with the best tech. THX certification means a lot. You can run direct or use the room auto correct with a microphone to calibrate the system for the speakers and rooms. After running auto correct you can switch between direct and corrected and decide for yourself. In the better surround systems, the DAC sections are quite good, you can add an external tuner and phono amp if you want them. Some of the DAC chips are a little shrill on the high end, I know my THX rated Pioneer has an attenuation menu specifically for the problem, I turned it down 3 times until the shrill sound was gone. Lots of interfaces and choices. If you have read any of the many Forte Threads, placement is always an issue that has to be worked, but the speakers once they are in the sweet spot are the best sleepers in the industry. A lot of the industry reviewers never had a pair of LaScalas or Fortes in the homes or studios, and were amazed when they received the demo units. FWIW My 2 Chanel systems have EQ separates, both sound much better with the EQ on than off. Since I like the green glow of my Mc gear, I am staying with it, otherwise a used high end surround is a no brainer.
  6. Good discussion with some facts and measurement on the AVS Forum Emotiva BasX System Review Test Bench Test Bench Emotiva BasX Speaker System L/C/R Sensitivity: 88 dB from 500 Hz to 2 kHz www.soundandvision.com https://www.avsforum.com/threads/benefits-of-dual-monoblocks-vs-stereo-power-amp.3248840/
  7. Dual Mono Block Integrated Amps have a following They are typically in the 50 WPC range and are snapped up quickly. Looking at the performance specs nothing jumped out at me when I took a quick look them How does any AC flow backwards through the DC power supply and filter caps and the higher energy AC is happening on the Amp rails or circuits and far from the DC supply The line level voltage from the pre amp is tiny and away from the other channel how can it induce cross talk especially if using multi layer boards with ground planes. Yeah the vintage stuff, some barely qualifies as a PCB with traces dribbled onto the board. Kenwood KA-9100 Dual Mono Specifications: Power output: 90 watts per channel into 8ohm (stereo) Frequency response: 7Hz to 50kHz Total harmonic distortion: 0.03% Input sensitivity: 2.5mV (MM), 150mV (line) Signal to noise ratio: 83dB (MM), 100dB (line) Output: 1V (Pre out) Speaker load impedance: 4ohm to 16ohm Dimensions: 430 x 149 x 384mm Weight: 16.7kg Year: 1977 https://www.stereonet.com/forums/topic/340186-kenwood-ka-9100-dual-mono-vintage-integrated-amplifier/ It is a beauty, design matters
  8. The data device is two comms interfaces with a buffer in the middle and a user interface. The Laptop may be the best device for this application and it has a great user interface. I added Flash to replace the Hard drive when it died and rammed the CPU memory up to 8GB Some of the streamers have a Digital Signal Processor built in allowing you to EQ the room and some other tricks like an AV receiver. I just purchased a used Berringer 8024 EQ to see if it outperforms my other digital EQs. The Berringer has the Mic Interface and can learn the room and auto EQ the music. A lot of people like this product, but it has a learning curve.
  9. Any shielded USB cable is all you need. USB is a real protocol with CRC/ARQ; translation error detection and correction. Maybe $20 tops. The rest of the cables should also be shielded and it's a good practice to not run you data cables over the power cable. In my racks, I run power down the right side and data down the left side.
  10. Listening to the radio, they announced her death and began playing her songs. RIP
  11. Good point Search for spring wound turntable to begin Marlene Deietrich aka Shanghai Lilly had a great one in Shanghai Express 1932 Shanghai Lilly, the ruin of many a man ................
  12. HH Scott produced some of the best design aesthetics in Audio History combining fit, form and function with good looks. Not sure how they stack up performance wise vs the competition But in the Old Tube Days I believe they were a peer competitor to McIntosh Mc survived the transition to solid state aka transistors HH Scott did not. Compared to the years they were made, were they good tube performers ? This one sold for $5,500. 4310 Tuner Model 399 Receiver $1,100 HH Scott 333-B Wideband AM/FM MPX Stereo Tuner HH Scott 460A Integrated Stereo Amplifier Solid State
  13. I don't think most people inc me know how bad the collapse of the Soviet Union was for the Citizens. Overnight the banks stopped making payments, the currency worthless No one being paid for their Govt job, aka 99% of the population. Somehow they were able to get everyone to show up and harvest the crops, package the food, and get it onto trucks and trains and out to the population. Could have been 90% fatality famine. Crime also became astronomical, up to 20% of the men in some cities in organized gangs.
  14. My brother added a Cummins quiet dual fuel generator last year runs on city NG as the first backup and can cut over to LPG as a second backup On my advice he had a 1000 gallon tank buried in his yard. I guess planning depend on how bleak you think things will get 20 miles from his place tornadoes did a total wipe out so it was easy for him to get SA
  15. During the initial Virus Hysteria My friend in the country and I were eating our supplies and avoiding stores. When we spoke in person a few months later we both said the same thing. It was frightening how fast the food pumped down. I recall a headline "Who's laughing at preppers now" Dumped all of my gas cans into the Buick yesterday Will get another 15-20 gal fresh on Monday and add stable. Will probably lay in 4-6 months of new food this week It's stuff I eat normally, so it just goes into the rotation. I'll have to try some of the boxed pasta plenty in mylar in buckets. One thing I won't run out of is lead.......
  16. Got me interested enough to do some reading. This is a balanced write up on Tung aka Danish vs Raw Linseed and BLO Also some other articles on the topic. https://www.woodworkingtrade.com/danish-oil-vs-linseed-oil/ https://www.woodworkingtrade.com/tung-oil-vs-boiled-linseed-oil/

My understanding is that there are not enough people in the 20 year old age group to make the next batch of babies and 2 doesn't cut it for net zero either way, 3 is required. Some couples blank. The forecasts I read are rapid population collapse, already hitting Japan and China. Nigeria on the other hand is headed towards 1 Billion, African pop growth has been astronomical over the past 50 years, inc the Arab North 400% increase.
  18. Not a wood guy, but ...... Once you apply urethane, the party is over for doing anything else to the wood without stripping. What's a party with out strippers.... My two cents.
  19. My EE Chip Designer Friend RIP who was way into Tubes at one point. On his amps, he said the first thing he did was pull the rectifier tube, and stick two diodes into the sockets, FWIW
  20. How do you remove the wax in the future if you need to do something ? I applied oil to my speakers, which as I understand it, turns to plastic after it soaks in. The furniture store was pushing furniture polish for wood, does it hurt the glue under the veneer ?
  21. After my sister yelled at me for half an hour on the phone to stop hoarding I decided to take a look around to see if there really was something I could part with. Maybe make some room for more audio gear ...... Why not start with perishables ............ Canned food is forever unless it swells up, better in cool dark spaces like the low humidity basement. Whole grain like wheat was germinated after 10 years, 10 out of 10 seeds grew roots on a paper towel test. Grain was stored in a sealed food container with nitrogen gas. Same applies for Legumes. My legumes are sitting in the original plastic bags, I may germinate a few out of curiosity. Meat or other in a Freezer is forever as I understand it, unless the power goes out ..... Freezer with auto defrost is only 6 months at best. My doomsday supply of Bevita cookies individual wrappers dated 9-2020. Smell like glue, ate 1 and didn't die yet. Feeding the rest to the birds or mice on my back patio. 10 year old bag of rice krispies, goes directly to the animals Same for the box of unopened Life cereal, 2007. Next will be moving on to my doomsday pasta supply, plastic bagged in original boxes to keep the creepy crawlers out. MIL was radiating food, that lasted forever. Don't know what happened to that tech. Then there is the stuff in 10-25 year storage buckets. My brother sampled his 10-15 year old meals and tossed them out, now replaced. Don't know if he sampled the replacements ...... On Deck: the shed and basement Basement was doing well until I connected the old Duel turntable Added 3,500 LPs since then.....
  22. CONTROLLING THE NARRATIVE If you control what people see and hear You control them. INFORMATION FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE This level of control requires total information dominance and control No contradictory or alternative information, facts or viewpoints can be viewed by the people you wish to control. NARRATIVE CONTROL REQUIRES 100% INFORMATION CONTROL Censorship of the web is the result of those who run the systems and benefit the most from them, wishing to continue the total control of what you see and hear SENSORY DEPRIVATION Think of it as driving a car with the windows completely blacked out with paint. And the only information you have is what you see on the TV screen (or I-Phone) controlling your decisions on - when and where to turn, and - when to apply the brakes or accelerator. Then someone comes along and removes the paint from your car windows, this is what the Internet was before it was systematically censored, delisted and put inside the car with painted windows. WHY THE HYSTERIA OVER TWITTER Musk might remove some of the paint on the windshield, or maybe not.
  23. Get a used Pioneer Elite THX rated surround amp for around $200 100WPC front is plenty. Pioneer is the one I know, there are other THX rated surround amps that can serve the same function. I think there are a lot of used Onkyo THX Certified surround amps in the used market. I've never tried one. Make sure you get the remote and buy it from the first owner. Stock mic works well, others are probably better. Build in DAC and other features that pass THX Labs certification. 10 years old. Features can be turned on or off or tweaked. Make fantastic pre amps Add a phono pre amp of your choice if you need one. $50-200 is plenty Same for a quality outboard tuner if you like FM Sangeon HD is fantastic for $200 or any used FM tuner For a few bucks more score a used Yamaha MX Series Amp, 600, 800, 1000; $200-400 Easy to recap with Nichicon FG caps everywhere. Panasonic filter caps, and I think 1 bi-polar or non polar cap. MX 600-630 has plenty of power for Klipsch Heritage Speakers
  24. This works for me HELIOS is the architect's own home which evolved over time from a passive solar home, to a home which also reduced its hot water needs, to a home with reduced heating and cooling energy loads, and finally to a net zero energy home. Helios was first constructed in 1984 as a passive solar home with the intent of employing proper building orientation, partial earth sheltering, solar gain through a two story sunspace and south facing windows, and building mass to reduce the heating load in rural northwestern New Jersey. This design resulted in a home which consumed only 35% of the energy needed for space heating a comparable conventional home. In 1998 a solar hot water system was added to provide 65% of the hot water needs. With the advent of high efficiency mini-ductless split-system heat pumps, this equipment was installed over time to replace the existing heating systems in the home. When solar photovoltaic (PV) systems became more affordable in 2008, a 4.7 KW (DC) system was installed, and with further economies in solar PV an additional 4.1 KW (DC) system was installed in 2015. The result is a net-zero energy home which has been carefully monitored over a full year of actual use to verify that all energy for space heating, cooling, hot water, and plug loads is provided by solar energy. The only energy not yet covered is the electricity needed to charge the owner's electric car. When community solar is permitted in New Jersey the owner plans to purchase the necessary energy from a community system to also satisfy the electric vehicle. https://nesea.org/project-case-study/helios-passive-active-solar-home-net-zero-energy/general
  25. Current solar cells lose efficiency every year They are not at break even before their useful life expires No subsidies, no sales.
