  1. I have to say, If I was in your shoes - and I was a while ago, the route I took was, since I heard so much about the H H Scott amps I got one on ebay for about $280 and had Craig at NOS Valves redo it. Probably the most satisfying thing I ever did! In fact it was so satisfying I got another Scott 299C amp and had Craig go over that one too. This happened in March of this year and when my son came home in June after graduating college (he is now a music and choral teacher) he heard the magic of the Scott amp with my Cornscala speakers and he was visibly moved to tears. (I played him Mozart's Requiem). Since then I found a Scott 299D (for $360 - prices seem to be inching up) on ebay which I promptly sent off to Craig to do his magic. This is the start of my gift of music to him. Now I'm thinking of buying a set of Cornscala's {probably the kits} in the near future for him and an old Thorens to oil up and adjust. I know I ramble on but what I'm trying to say is you can go the route of getting a Scott amp and getting it redone by Craig and I suppose it will run $500 to $600 all told but you'll have an amp that will go the distance with new amps costing 3 to 4 times as much. If you were closer I'd let you listen to my setup. You'd see I'm right! Steve
  2. I have a Scott 299C that Craig of NOSValves did his magic on and I must admit the preamp is superb - and I believe your preamp in the 222C is very similar to mine. Maybe you have some weak preamp tubes in it???
  3. Hi, Could you tell me the size of your room you have these in? Thanks! Steve
  4. Forgot to mention, having Craig of "NOS Valves" rebuild my Scott brought it up to modern spec's. I wish you could experience it!
  5. I've heard them, and they are good, but what through me for a loop (and which I now have) was a H H Scott 299C integrated amp from the early "60's. I think it has more detail than the Luxman. Just my .02 worth of info.
  6. Armstrong had nerves of steel and yet was very humble. He will be missed!
  7. Super!................And a big good luck to you!
  8. Yes, and I have no idea why.................
  9. Yes, inquiring minds want to know.................
  10. They do look to be in very good shape...................Good luck!!!!!!
  11. That's one fantastic story! Wish my Dad was into Hi-Fi but all he did was plop himself into a chair and watch any sports that was on. And if my brothers and I were watching an Abbot and Costello movie when he came home, well that was the end of A & C !
  12. Hmmm.................. that opening for the midrange looks like this is becoming a Cornscala. Is this correct?
  13. that's the most beautiful Scott 299 I've ever seen!!!! (and I thought my 299C was nice). How noisy are those fans in the rear, and what size are they? - If I may ask.
  14. You mentioned "modified" Khorns..........How so?
  15. Yes, pictures please.........and oh yea, wonderful story.
  16. Say, you guys did alright for yourselves at the age of 12. When I was 12, the set-up I had was cupping my ears with my hands and listening to the neighbors system. [8]
  17. Has anybody seen or heard of Oswalds Mill Audio? I've looked at their website and it appears they are building speakers the old fashioned way - like from the 1930's in movie theaters. All horns of course, and very efficient - but not I imagine a WFS (wife friendly speakers). Some of them look kinda like a Rorschach test in 3D. I wonder if he ever saw a Klipschorn ????[]
  18. One of the best recordings I've found on cd with the best dynamic spread from low (quiet) to high (loud) would be from the soundtrack from "Vertigo" composed by the incredible Bernard Herrmann and recorded in the late 90's by Joel McNeely. OMG those bass trombones will have your hair stand on end!!!
  19. I'm kinda suprised Bart didn't say - "I Love Lucy".
  20. Since all Ampex is pretty much Rolls-Royce in quality...... well, thats a real super find!!! Good luck with it!
  21. Chip, I recently bought an H. H. Scott 299C amp which I then sent to Craig at "NOS Valves". He rebuilt it to better than new spec's and it sounds truly superb with my Cornscala's. I am very demanding in the audio department and it turned out much better than I ever expected. You might say that I'm one happy camper. Add the cost of the 299C plus repair and shipping and you're probably looking at close to the high end of your budget - helps if you can get the purchase price of the Scott under $300.[]
  22. Hi, Does anyone know of a brand or type of (as quiet as possible) cooling fan that I could put on top of the vent of my H.H.Scott 299C amp? I'm thinking a 3 to 4 inch size that plugs into the back of the amp, so when I turn the amp on, the fan turns on with it. Thanks, Steve
