  1. I hit 136 db with a single punch 40 and two series 1 12's. My best friend at the time used that same 40 watt amp to win nationals in the 0-100 watt class with two 18's in free-air configuration, it was nuts. I hear these guys wondering if 150 watts per channel is enough for small speakers and I just shake my head. You wouldn't exactly have a hard time beating your current setup, most anything is going to be a higher quality. Biggest thing that some of us perceived to have went downhill in terms of speakers since the old school Rockford days is that EVERYTHING is made in China now. I live near the now defunct factory that used to make Kicker, Lanzar, Bostwick, some JL audio, and more. I have multiple friends that worked there and they made high quality products with tight tolerances. Kicker was one of the first and biggest to bail, shortly after the square Solobaric's came out they sent all production to China. They tried to hang on and even produced their own version of the solobarics but the Credence brand never caught on. They laid people off but eventually had to close the doors. In my opinion the switch instantly made everything seem cheap, manufacturers instantly started incorporating lots of plastic and plasticy looking cheap materials. They tried to keep everything quiet and act like nothing happened but those who knew what was going on was kind of shocked. I think the manufacturing process over there has improved greatly but I still remember when the big switch came and it wasn't pretty. But then again, the xmax / xmech these new Chinese subs are getting is nowhere near what was possible back in the day. Hardcore subs back then are pretty standard nowadays. Hardcore subs nowadays would have been considered some kind of secret government space age project. Top SPL drag cars are squeezing out like 30 db more than what the top guys were getting back then. That's insane. Much of it is due to science, understanding the physics of what the sound waves are doing inside the car, but much of it is due to big leaps in subwoofer technology. 2. Any interest in a Technics turntable? This unit is in really good condition and must have been used by a DJ for awhile. It comes with a very new flight case. I use one of these units and really like it. I use mine with a Shure m97xe cartridge. Like I said, this one is in great condition and thought I would throw it out there. $400
  3. I just wish I could find a decent pair of RF-7s for a decent price locally.
  4. The 808-8a drivers and horn can be resold for what he is asking if they are in good working order and good cosmetic condition. Not sure that is the case in this instance.
  5. I would first try two SW12 subs to see how you like it. I have one that I just picked up today that I'm refinishing the veneer before re-selling it. The main upgrades to the newer subs are the addition of room correction/EQ, sometimes smaller enclosures with higher excursion woofers and high powered amplifiers. Of course, the designers are now using finite analysis to model better sounding drivers, but you can still get great sound from the older subs and since you are using older speakers it is probably a better fit.
  6. Darn it! I just sold a pair of RS-7s because I got tired of waiting on nice pair of RF-7s or RF-5s. Literally, last week! I may have to pull the trigger and wait on a pair of RS-7s.
  7. I would definitely pay $150 for that sub. Look at my signature. I love Velodyne Servo subs.
  8. If you can't fix it yourself, Paradigm will help you out. They've always been great to deal with when I've needed parts or repairs. I miss Gary who was there Tech Guy for 20+ years. Not sure what caused him to depart, but give them a call if you need any help. They are a lot like the Klipsch Parts guys
  9. It's a great white paper. I've read it on numerous occasions and used it when experimenting with 4 subs.
  10. I've always had pleasant experiences with the Parts guys. I've ordered a lot over the years from them. Klipsch is one of the few mainstream companies that still stock replacement parts for older models. If I run across a beat up pair of Klipsch speakers for a good price, I don't hesitate because I know I can repair and replace if needed.
  11. I was thinking more like 1982

  13. I really like the old Yamaha M and MX amps. They provide the power they say they do. I also really like the styling.
  14. I added a Rotel RMB-1077 to my media room system and was pleasantly surprised. This amp definitely tightened things up and the dynamics improved. This amp features B&O's ICE topolgy. This is probably the best class D amp I've heard.

I prefer hard buttons while surfing and never been a big fan of touchscreen remotes and only use my Yamaha app to screw with other people when watching TV.
  16. Yes, I will ship. I will send you a pm to get your city and zip.
  17. I've run Yamaha receivers for 20+ years and have run them on several 6 and 4 ohm speakers and in situations where they should be seeing no more than 4 ohms loads and haven't had an issue. Anytime there has been an issue it wasn't due to low impedance. In fact, the only issues I've ever had with Yamaha receivers were due to faulty HDMI boards.
  18. You can have great performance out of sealed and ported. You will tend to find that pre-fab enclosures are typically tuned to 36-40hz, therefore, they will typically play louder than a sealed enclosure. I prefer to tune my ported boxes to no more than 32hz and have tuned them as low as 27hz. Sealed boxes obviously play lower and are more cleaner and more accurate at the lower frequencies. I currently have two 10" Image Dynamic ID10 subs in a sealed enclosure in one truck and a single JL 10W3 in a ported box in another truck. They definitely sound different and I would say the single 10 in the ported box is just as loud as the two in the sealed box. Both systems sound great! Just a little different.
  19. I have a black Klipsch Academy in excellent shape. I'm sure the bottom shows some signs of scuffing, but I really don't see any other issues.
  20. This year's game between OU and Texas is playing second fiddle to the game between to religious based colleges in Texas - TCU vs. Baylor. Never imagined that in a million years.
  21. I think I paid $3.03 yesterday in Denton, TX
