  1. The best sounding DAC that I've ever owned personally was the Benchmark DAC1 HDR. The resolution was so good that I immediately had to dump about half of my music downloads and search out FLAC file replacements. Higher resolution is a double-edged sword. This was several years ago, FLAC files are pretty much common now but when I started downloading the best you could hope for was 256 or 320 mp3's and the majority were only 128.. Of course storage space has improved dramatically (size & cost) as well so that also helps.
  2. Very nice! I've used that same plate in a couple projects and they're still kicking a few years later. I've never experienced the noise you're talking about but I wonder if you loose laid some poly fill inside the cabinet if that would help?
  3. The SI is an extremely nice sounding sub. My friend was just gun shy after losing his and decided for only $30 more or what not he could get a sub with twice the power handling ability. I think the biggest problem he's facing is that he re-used his 4 cu ft box for the Ultimax driver (since he already had it) and everywhere I've read says that it needs at least an 8 cu ft box, preferably a 12.
  4. That really sucks! Have you thought of taking them to small claims court? I believe you can sue up to $5000 and it only costs about $100 to file. A friend of mine has had to do this a few times to get paid and it seems to work. He always sues for the max amount and before the hearing they get a chance to settle, which they usually do.
  5. A friend of mine had the SI 18 in a 4 cu ft ported cabinet and it was easily one of the hardest hitting subwoofers I've ever encountered with a surprising amount of upper bass detail. Incredible sub.. until it blew up. He replaced it with an Ultimax 18 and it sounds OK, not nearly as good as the SI but it has lasted a lot longer already.
  6. Sounds like the crossover to me from what you've written. Maybe you could swap crossovers between cabinets just to be sure? If it is the crossover you can send it out to Bob Crites for diagnostics and repair, he is very reasonably priced and has a quick turn around time. Good luck!

    RC7

I really like the RC-7. After I picked up my new RC-64 II to replace the RC-7 I was using, I initially looked around for a second RC-7 to run as mains as I really think they'd sound great that way. But then I stumbled across a nice pair of RB-75's for a reasonable price.. I could see a theater setup with multiple RC-7's working just fine, especially if you had the right subwoofer compliment. Maybe a stereo pair of RSW-15's for the mains and a Stereo Integrity 18 for the LFE?
  8. I was not trying to imply that the RSW-15 is the best sub in the world. My point was that different subs sound different. The RSW-15 is a very accurate sub though and in a small to mid-sized room it can be quite impressive. I myself have moved on to a pair of Ultra 2's and have been quite happy.
  9. Darn it, wrong coast!! Good deal for those nearby.
  10. This has not been my experience at all.
  11. So is this the same argument that all amplifiers should sound the same? Either they're reproducing the frequencies correctly or they're not? I have had MANY different subwoofers and have compared many head to head, usually in the same room / same exact location by swapping them in and out. So if you say its "room related" shouldn't all subs have the same problems in said room? Why would one sub sound so much different in the same exact spot in a room as another? The Velodyne sub I was referring to was the FSR-15. I actually ran one for almost a year and thought it was great-- until I got my hands on my first RSW-15. Absolutely no comparison, the RSW-15 was like "seeing the light" I just couldn't believe how many sub tones were hidden in the music that I never heard before. One of my favorite songs for testing bass is by The Black Eyed Peas, "Boom Boom Pow." With a "good sub" you can hear maybe 6 variations in the bass tones, with a "Musical" sub, such as the RSW-15 you can hear about 12 and the transitions between each tone with the "speed" of the waves actually slowing and accelerating. If you want to test accuracy of a sub, play a good recording of this song and crank it up.
  12. HIP's or KP-250's are great speakers as well, trick is finding a pair. HIP's in CA: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151763866777?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT KP-250's in Indiana, although I'm really thinking he's asking about double retail. A good deal on these would be $250-$400 in my opinion: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Klipsch-KP-250-vintage-speakers-Heresy-Pro-sounds-great-DJ-band-karaoke-/252041654149?hash=item3aaeda6f85 KP-301's in Atlanta, again, a bit overpriced, $400-$500 would be a deal in my opinion: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Klipsch-KP-301-3-Way-Loud-Speaker-System-used-good-condition-/281128332302?hash=item41748dec0e
  13. Hello and welcome! Sounds like a cool project for sure. In the used market location is key. I'd look for the Klipsch Professional line, I think you'll get the most bang for your buck there for your large space. There's a pair of KI-362's on eBay now, don't know if they're close to you or not: http://www.ebay.com/itm/181822800919?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Good luck, and if you stick around put up some pic's of the remodel, I'm sure there'd be interest in watching the progress! Jesse
  14. I don't agree with this statement. Maybe there is another term for what it represents but try comparing an older Velodyne 15 (or just about any older, underpowered large sub) with a Klipsch RSW-15 and you will notice an extreme difference in accuracy, tightness and "speed" (another term often dismissed.)
  15. I run SS but pretty much have liked all the tube products I've tried over the years. I see myself settling down with a nice tube integrated one day in at least one room.

    Old Age

How do you know when you're getting older? Everything hurts and what doesn't hurt, doesn't work. Getting lucky means you find your car in the parking lot. The gleam in your eyes is from the sun hitting your bifocals. Your knees buckle and your belt won't. Those issues of Reader's Digest just can't come fast enough. You hear your favorite song on the elevator at work. You give up all your bad habits and you still don't feel good. Dialing long distance wears you out. You're the one calling the police because those damn kids next door don't know how to turn down the stereo. You actually want socks for Christmas. You and your teeth don't sleep together. After painting the town red, you have to take a long rest before applying a second coat. The little gray-haired lady you help across the street is your wife. There's nothing left to learn the hard way. Your little black book contains only names ending in M.D.
  17. Thanks Moray! I've actually read that article a few times over the last several years and its interesting. I thought for a moment to mount the tweeters as you suggested but dismissed the idea as it will not fit into my future build plans anyway. Fact is, I love the Chorus II and I'm not trying to improve on that design just come as close as I can to replicating it in a Heresy sized cabinet while letting stereo subs fill in the low end. As far as stuffing the cabinets I put about 1 pound of poly-fill per box. The bass is actually surprising good, to the point where I'm not going to bother with ports. Everything sounds tight, balanced and clean.
  18. I set the tweeter so that it lines up with the mid horn, just as it does in the Chorus II. Eventually I'm going to build whole new cabinets and all the drivers will be mounted the same anyway.
  19. These will blow away the quartets in just about everyway imaginable. They are basically Chorus II's with less low end but in a cabinet 1/3 the size. Same sensitivity, same max output, same great midrange, pretty much everything that is a Chorus II minus the chest pounding bass. But, the bass did turn out better than I expected and is easily as good as any model Heresy I've heard.
  20. I had a short fling with a few tube products and was pretty much impressed with everything I tried. The only real tube amp I tried was the little Bob Carver VTA 20 and it was incredible. That 20 watts drove my Chorus II's with authority, lots of bass slam and plenty of output, pretty amazing really.
  21. Congrats! Seems like they went fast. The EQ microphone plug is a 2.5mm so if you use a standard 3.5mm setup mic you'll need an adapter. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audio-Aux-2-5mm-Male-Plug-to-3-5mm-Female-Jack-Aux-Stereo-TRS-Adapter-Converter-/201087440328?hash=item2ed1bed5c8
  22. Looking at the drivers they appear to be original Cornwalls, but I'm no expert. Congrats on the find, sounds like a great deal either way!
