  1. Pulled from the web: "Decibels, dB, are a measure of loudness. Unlike other measurements, decibels are logarithmic in scale not linear. Speed is linear, 40km/h is twice as fast 20km/h. Time is linear, 60 seconds is twice as long as 30 seconds. Decibels arent, 80dB isnt twice as loud as 40dB. 80dB is twice as loud as 77dB ! This is how "decibels" interprets into "loudness": +1db is 1.25x louder +3db is 2x louder + 20db is 100x louder !" This is how I've always understood it. If the above is true than 4.77db would be about 2.5 times louder as I stated above.
  2. The Chorus models can sound very good up to reasonable volumes with a very small amplifier. However, if you are looking to fully drive them to their max potential or output you really need about 300 watts per channel. 200 watts gets you about 80-90% of the way there but they will bottom out at the upper end of the volume knob. I've driven my Chorus II's with a Sunfire 600x2 and they seemed to love the extra juice but really a 300x2 will do the job just fine.
  3. This is strange. I had a set of 30's for awhile and thought they had plenty of bass. My brother has them now in a straight 2 channel setup with a Carver TFM-45 driving them and they just straight get with the program with no need for a sub. I'm going to have to agree that there must be something wrong somewhere with those speakers as what you're describing does not sound right. Hope you get it all figured out, good luck!
  4. The RC-3's are nice budget center speakers.
  5. Tinpan is a member here but he has these posted on the Carver forum, they look really nice! http://www.carveraudio.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=19220
  6. For me it would depend on how bad I want said item(s.) If it was some what rare and I really wanted it, I would offer the seller my absolute max price I'd pay to hopefully get me in front of the item. I would then determine how much I'd actually be willing to pay based on condition etc and be fully prepared to walk away if it was just in too bad of shape or we couldn't agree on a fair price. Obviously if the item(s) were hundreds of miles away that wouldn't work though. If it was just a run of the mill type item I wasn't really interested in personally but thought I might be able to flip I'd just send out a low ball offer and forget about it. If he answers back great, if not, so long.
  7. I've always had a problem with center channel clarity and output until I got my RC-7. I have it set at plus 3db though as well to match my mis-matched speakers, works great. I can't imagine using ceiling speakers for home theater, just doesn't seem like the sounds would come from the appropriate locations but I don't know, never heard a theater set that way.
  8. I'd love to find a set of KP-450's near me...
  9. I think you'd have a hard time ticking off the neighbors with a $500 tube anything and RF-7's, unless you scored a really, really good deal somewhere. The RF-7's are some what power hungry from what I've experienced, probably need a good 60+ tube watts to get them going. Small room or near field listening would be a different story as I'm sure there would be plenty of options for that, good luck!
  10. I had a pair that replaced my Chorus II's for almost a year and I was quite happy with them. This was several years ago and I had just moved into an apartment with the TV / stereo wall being shared with my neighbor. It only took a couple days before I had a note on my door saying something about family photos laying on the floor. I blamed the rear passives. There just happened to be a pair of Tangent's on CL for $200 and I noticed the front firing passive so thought I'd try them out. The bass wasn't as loud but it was clean, I'd have to say kind of a cross between the Forte and Heresy, being as loud as a Forte with bass response closer to the Heresy. They worked out perfect for me at that time and place.

  12. I wasn't aware the RW-10 had a passive, are you sure its not for the RSW-10d?
  13. The heritage line work great for home theater and the RF-7's are impressive as well, don't think you could go wrong either way.
  14. Oh, and congrats on the Chorus II's!!
  15. If its just a small section torn a little bit of shoe goo should do the trick. Otherwise Simplyspeakers re-cones these passives for $50 I believe, probably would want to have both done at once though just to be safe.
  16. I would expect a break from a friend or family member if they had something I wanted to keep and use for myself, not to flip, but I would not expect to pay any less than they paid, especially if they just bought it. If they were in a bad way financially (hence the need for the sale) I might offer them more based on the circumstances. Every time you sell something to someone for below market value you are basically reaching into your wallet and handing that person money, period. Some can afford and are inspired to do such things while others depend on the revenue created by the sale. Not everyone is in the same pair of shoes.
  17. I think in the information age that we live in and the ease of online research it would be foolish not to make informed decisions on anything you purchase and eBay can be a great resource. That being said, if you're in the market for a specific item you should already know roughly what to expect to pay for said item and should immediately recognize a good deal when you see one.
  18. Good review! It would be interesting to hear your thoughts comparing things being exactly equal. Plug one set into one system and listen for a while then only change the speakers and listen to the same set of music. Sometimes I'll hook different speakers on each side, start in my listening position and then walk to each speaker up close to hear differences. As you get closer to each individual speaker it will stand out more and you can quickly move closer to the other speaker to hear a change. I have the RF-7's now and compared them with the Chorus II's and now the KP-250 II's. The RF-7's are no slouch, I was actually pleasantly surprised by how nice they sound. On paper I was disappointed in them. The KLF-30's replaced the Chorus II and I thought it was actually a downgrade in build quality and performance. When I seen the replacement for the KLF-30 was dual 10" 2-way speaker I just never really took them seriously.
  19. Are you running the subs with both sets of speakers or just with the Rf-7's?
  20. Those look like Forte's to me
  21. Nice setup! If I was closer... Good luck with the sale!
  22. The Chorus II's are an amazing speaker in so many ways. I use to joke around about being able to power mine with a clock radio. They really do sound "full" with tight bass, even with >1 watt. On the other end you can pour 600+ watts into them and they just belt out the notes with extreme clarity and impact. Their only real fault is that they sound just like whatever you put into them, garbage in - garbage out kind of deal.
