  1. donate your sound system to your church and tell them they have to have it hooked up BEFORE your funeral. And if you have them play 'Freebird', make sure its the live version.
  2. If you use bar stools take on old yoga mat if you have one and cut it in the shape of the speaker footprint. It will make the speaker 'stick' to the stool much better than just sitting wood on wood. I think it helps imaging a little too as the speaker does not move but that might be my ego listening and not my ears...
  3. More of a conceptual question, for that size of room would it be better to have fewer speakers running more power or more speakers with less watts each? It would depend on what receiver you are running too of course.
  4. Wow, this really hit home. He is in my thoughts and prayers to get well soon. From his name, it sounds like he was very active in extreme sports and is going to have to go through a lifestyle change and be very careful.
  5. $550 is a bit much for KG 5.5's. In today's market I would not pay more than $400 for them.
  6. Happy late birthday! I am glad there are other young people here to bridge the hi-fi generation gap. I didnt believe you are the youngest forum member until I saw your birthday, you beat me by one year...
  7. I think one of the biggest issues people have with cats is they have the perception that they are animated stuffed animals and treat them as such thinking they are just cute fluffy little things and then wonder why their furniture, hands etc get destroyed. Cats are in fact highly intelligent, vicious apex predators that communicate via advanced body language, scent markings and vocals. You need an outlet for this viciousness which is necessary for their well being and is also highly entertaining. We let our cat outside with us and have him chase toys and tennis balls to get all that energy out. Its also important to know their body language to see what mood they are in and plan your actions accordingly. We feed our cat a raw meat diet and its pretty cool to watch him chomp down a whole chicken thigh bone with a happy glazed over look as he crushes it with his teeth.
  8. Good luck with the Sale. It seams like the used speaker market has been slow lately. When I bought my KG 5.5's in Utaha few years ago I was lucky to get them for $400 and just eeked out a number of other buyers. Some guy finally sold his wood finish ones a few months ago for around $350 and he had them on the market for weeks. Awesome speaker btw they are definitely a high energy speaker that throws the intensity of music at you effortlessly.
  9. I've been following him for a few years, you really should come up one of these days. Seems we have similar music tastes. Have you heard Glowing In The Darkest Night, that my favorite that he has done. I will definitely have to make the trip, thats cool you are in to Pretty Lights and other electronic music. I moved here from Colorado where it is a huge part of the culture but not so much here in Utah unless maybe your at the ski resorts. I have been a PL fan ever since I saw one of his first shows when he played for free at CU back when he first dropped "Hot like Sauce". His sound was so fresh and unique and I like how even today he tries to push the envelope. Glowing in the Darkest night is one of my favorite albums as well, especially 'Drift Away'.
  10. I think this all depends of the venue and their focus on acoustics. For example, I have seen some shows at Red Rocks that were utterly epic. Then again I have been at shows where there is horrid muddy sound and your surrounded by pushy idiots and spend more time trying not to get into fights than enjoying the music. I actually enjoy going to a good DJ set more than most live bands, especially at places like Beta Nightclub with their insane sound system and hundreds of thousands of dollars of acoustic treatment. Good electronic artists build up the energy then 'drop' the beat and everyone goes crazy enjoying the experience together, in a way you are part of the show rather than simply watching a band.
  11. In a world of Pop music and computer sampled tracks for the youth, a Colorado based DJ named Pretty Lights has deconstructed his art and went all the way back to the source of music to record samples live and then cut his own vinyl, mixed it using vintage analogue effects and put it all together as a coherent album. This is one of my favorite LP's in my vinyl collection and it is a truly unique project:
  12. Also, make sure 'Enable Hardware Acceleration' is unchecked. I have this checked now, why is it better to uncheck?
  13. I was mainly using ickstream to run through my Squeezebox Touch. I also used the desktop version to try it out. I have dropped TIDAL now, mainly because of content. It is severely lacking compared to Spotify. I will continue to use Spotify. Spotify is awesome. It is important however to make sure you are a premium member and to go to 'Edit' then 'Preferences' and select the "High Quality Streaming" option to get the best sound quality. I just got a NOS Amperex 7308 Gold Pin tube for my DAC and the sound is holographic with my KG 5.5's. Here is a link https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/guides/#!/article/If-you-re-a-Premium-user-you-can-try-High-Quality-Streaming
  14. A few years ago my Grandpa passed away and I inherited a Thorens TD-124 that was in his basement. It had been sitting for years but was in good shape so I cleaned it up and incorporated it into my stereo system. It belonged to a friend of his who also passed and supposedly smoked cigarettes. Anyway, I figured it is probably time to look into taking it apart and getting the internals cleaned and re-oiled to improve performance and longevity since the turntable is over 40 years old. So last night I took the heavy platter off and noticed a bunch of dust and grime on the motor assembly etc. I was not attempting to take everything apart then, just pop the hood and take a look at what I have to work with. Anyway, I grab my shop vac to vacuum out the dust etc and turn it on and start cleaning out the inside of the turntable. Suddenly, my Fiance who was sitting on the couch starts yelling to turn the shop vac off! Apparently, years of smoking had permeated into the dust etc in the turntable and somehow the vaporized tobacco oils got sucked through both shop vac filters and blasted into our couch and my Fiance. It was like it was booby trapped or something. I ended up spending the next couple of hours airing out the room and spraying vinegar on the couch to try to rid the smell. It even smells a bit this morning. Anyway, I guess its all part of the adventure in using and restoring vintage audio gear...
  15. HAHAHAHA I actually inherited this record from my Dad.
  16. It looks like much of the cost is due to the integrated speakers etc. Unless you really want the built in speakers, these will probably be easier to move and manage and are considerably cheaper: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rocker-Gaming-Chair-Red-Video-Game-Play-Ergonomic-Reading-Watching-TV-Movies/251790193514?_trksid=p2047675.c100010.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131231084308%26meid%3Dabab811e234f4ad39c6372151b19668a%26pid%3D100010%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D24%26sd%3D291348386023
  17. We should do it. However I am in Mt Green, about 5 miles from Snowbasin ski resort, its a bit of a drive (but out of the inversion). You might like my KLFs too, I think they are head and shoulders above the KG series and have ti in both the mid and high and Bob's xovers in them. I too work in SLC... Yeah that is quite the journey from my house. Its a nice drive though, I used to have to head up to the Browning plant up in Morgan occasionally for a work meeting. Those KLF 30's look awesome, definitely a progression from the KG 5.5's. Maybe I can find a free weekend and make a trip out of it. I will PM you if I have time sometime.
  18. When my cat is hungry he sits in front of my KG 5.5's and glares at me. He knows he will get a healthy dose of the squirt bottle if he touches them so he just sits there with a look like, "At any minute a**hole, I can scratch your speaker cloth so feed me..."
  19. I have not tried these but they lower the SPL and preserve the sound quality: http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-ETY-Plugs-Protection-Earplugs/dp/B0044DEESS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1420846774&sr=8-7&keywords=ear+plugs
  20. It would be awesome to see Klipsch at college campuses. As others have mentioned, unless you have HEARD Klipsch speakers you dont have an idea of why you would want them. I am 26 and I was very surprised that most theaters in the US have Klipsch speakers. I would never have been into Klipsch in the first place if a rich guy didnt give me a free pair of KSB 1.1 bookshelf speakers for helping him move some furniture. If you had a room at the "welcome" events at campuses with a high end setup playing music it would be a really cool experience. Even a high end setup at the electrical engineering center would make an impact. Especially schools like University of Colorado etc where kids have more of their parent's money to burn than they know what to do with. Klipsch also has an awesome company culture and the more you look into it the more interesting it becomes. Vintage is in in a big way as well and audio fidelity is too once kids actually hear the difference. Record stores are experiencing record sales right now and when I went to CU, Beta nightclub in Denver was by far the most popular club due to their fully horn loaded FunktionOne sound system. (I stuck my head in the bass bin once at a Deadmau5 show but thats a different story...) Also do demo's on how to properly set up a speaker system and a HT system to get kids involved. My buddy had a BOSE system in a box for weeks because he didnt know how to set it up and that was plug and play. Efficient speakers have a huge advantage for Urban youth as well because you can have them on a low SPL and still enjoy all the detail in the music. There is a huge generation gap in the high end audio industry right now and the companies that proactively reach out to the youth are the ones that are going to succeed.
  21. Im with you on the gaming system. I like watching movies with 5.1 surround but games in my opinion are far more engaging. Being able to have the sounds swirl around you in real time is pretty awesome. First person shooters are fun but Forza 4 is my favorite, I love cranking the volume up and driving my 800 hp '70 Chevelle with a twin screw supercharger. Its a very violent but satisfying audio experience. Its pretty cool how they recorded the car sounds:
  22. I think this is what the issue is and why vinyl still sounds good but Spotify is hit or miss. I did notice that movies sound amazing with the new tweeters with details I never noticed before. I watched the opening scene from the LOTR The Two Towers last night with the volume cranked and the metallic screeching sound of Gandalf shoving his sword into the Balrog made me stare in disbelief at the screen. I will probably keep my KG 5.5's for life and definitely want to do the crossovers soon. Do you know how difficult it is to do the new caps? The old crossover boards look too small for the larger caps from Bob Crites, should I take them apart and mount on a new board like Crites does? Also is there a way to test the new xovers? I would hate to build them and screw something up.
  23. Hey thanks for the link. I am going to keep the titanium in for now and get a multimeter from O'Reilly's Auto Parts this weekend and test the old ones to see what is going on. I put on some vinyl and it sounded very good so I am thinking the titanium is more revealing and bringing out the weaknesses in my digital system. I just bought an Amperex 7308 vintage gold pin tube for my DAC too so with any luck that should balance everything out as the stock tube was known to be not as warm. I live down in Lehi but work downtown in SLC. If you dont mind, I would love to hear your setup with the Cornwalls and the massive sub you built sometime (assuming we dont all choke to death from the inversion...)
  24. twk123

    I like it!

HAHAHA I have had to deal with this. Back when I was in college I had my cheap turntable on at a party and this stupid kid tried scratching it. I ran up and yelled at him and he actually said, "Its ok, I used to be a DJ..."
  25. If you like Whiskey and want something different for working on your boat, try Apleton Estate 12-Year Rum. We went to Costa Rica for x-mas and I grabbed a bottle at the duty free shop. Its a delicious sipping rum that has a great smokey flavor from the aging, totally different than the usual mixing rums. http://www.rumratings.com/brands/37-appleton-estate-12-year-rum
