  1. I have aligned them with the shims, and also with a battery and also with just mechanically pushing them around. I prefer to not remove the dust cap, however I have had a woofer that was dragging after a battery alignment. That I had to redo with the shims. The Foam of today may have less or more compliance than the foam from the 70's, you could never know. Generally Putting in a rubber surround in place of the foam actually gets you more SPL and does not cost you much in terms of accuracy/tightness. IMHO, that always helps because usually the tweeters make more SPL and are padded down, but not enough IMHO. Anyway, I'd stay away from an accordion cloth surround when a woofer had foam, but IMHO rubber vs foam are interchangeable. Cool. Srinath.
  2. With a passive push comes to shove you could take a mylar sheet (aka - a 5l wine bag) and stretch it across the frame. In fact if it has a basket - well you don't even need it. Ignore it, and use a ring of wood or something that allows you to put on the mylar like a drum skin. That may actually improve the bass - or might not. Cool. Srinath.
  3. You shim it to align the voice coil, cos VC rub is well, bad. Passive Radiator has no VC so no rub, it can be glued on crooked and wont matter much. If you glue it on crooked enough to see, you need to re do it. That's all. Cool. Srinath.
  4. Totally off topic - sorry But it is a Klipsch center (I hope). I have this insane 10" X 2 and tractrix in the middle speaker without a model number I can see. Hoping it will work with my Khorns. Can someone identify what it is ? Did Klipsch make a 10" woofer center. Thanks. Srinath.
  5. Mine had the VTA version. One of the better ones IMHO. Cos other than the stereo/mono not working its awesome and clean and easier to work on, I am somehow not warmed up to point to point wiring now. Thanks. Srinath.
  6. +1. That's the ever popular dynaco mod kit in there. Populrly installed by every hamfisted clown with delusions of "ability" and "knowledge". I know, cos I got one too. Thankfully, it does work, however some things in it are bypasses. By design ... yea right, the manufacturer intende to not be able to do 1/2 the functions they install. Yea sure. Cool. Srinath.
  7. If he had labelled them as Cornwall components He could only charge 1000. Hence the Khorn. Cool. Srinath.
  8. I will get on this - I have the VC's but no cones, and I'm sure the cones are re useable, but the entire set is all in various boxes in my old house, and I am not even scheduled to get there for weeks. May run there Friday just to retrieve this if my wife decides we should. Else, I'll be not able to till past the 17th of april. But I'll call him soon and get his thoughts too. Cool. Srinath.
  9. LOL, mine says Cici's pizza and Chinese buffet, Cool. Srinath.
  10. Actually I have done this and this I call my ghetto long island ice tea. Vodka, lemon, sugar, ginger ale. I guess I could do diet ginger ale lemon and vodka now. Anyway I am almost done on this bottle, I'll go alcohol free a few days after its done. Then back to Bourbon or whisky or some like that, Cool. Srinath.
  11. Actually its a thing - They use instant coffee granules and this and that. BTW they also do coffee beans in bourbon - which I would guess probably sounds just about as bad as my bourbon and lemon. But its out there man. Cool. Srinath.
  12. Vodka and coffee chilled. Not a big fan, but I did manage to stay awake. Either the ponderously slow drinking - took ~8 hours to finish ~45 cc or the fact that the caffeine countered the vodka. Cool. Srinath.
  13. Awesome, I'll get that woofer set out and work on getting it to where I can talk to him intelligently about it. I forgot about its condition already. I bought a VC set for it, some weird metric one like a 55mm or something. But I have a few of those as well. Thanks so much. Cool. Srinath.
  14. You have a specific place in mind - Cos I have a pair of B&W 801 woofers that need it. These are plastic woofers, not paper like EV/Klipsch/JBL Cool. Srinath.
  15. I now know why America won the cold war - Cos cheap Bourbon is far more drinkable than cheap vodka. Anyway I made a drinkable cocktail out of that cheap vodka, too bad it has some carbs in it, else I'd be drinking it now, and not suffering through the vodka and lemon I'm currently chugging. The recipie is - 45gm cheapo vodka, 5-8 gm grand marnier, 15-20 gm lemon juice, 4-5 pieces of dried pineapple. Sit it in the fridge overnight. Yea its a crime to put grand marnier in the thing - I know. It may be OK without, just add more pineapple I guess. I used dried mango, but should work better with pineapple. Cool. Srinath.
  16. My sony combo box system complete with speakers - HST211 cost me $420 or so from circuit city in 1992. I bought an "upgraded" 6 cd cartridge style cd player for $125 a few months later. A nice even $550. Can I trade that for these Heresys ?? I'll even deliver my system and haul away these Old things. Cool. Srinath.
  17. I'll check it out, but if its got honey in it, its out for now. I've been wanting to try Bulleit after I had a sip @ a friends last year, but its spiced and I cant drink spiced and sweetened now. In a bit maybe. Cool. Srinath.
  18. Or my favorite one along these lines - People in all walks of life are wondering where all these people are walking to .... Cool. Srinath.
  19. I got cheap vodka, and sadly cheap vodka doesn't hold a candle to cheap bourbon. Literally, $10 for 1.75 l vodka vs $10 for 1.75l bourbon - no comparison. I have an alcohol principle mainly for hard liquor - I never buy the same brand, model, etc etc twice so far. I think I may have to revert to Ancient age atleast 1 more time. I'll try some other bourbon but that ancient age is way out of its price class IMHO. ~$20 a 1.75l its way out of its price class in taste and feel. Cool. Srinath.
  20. There was one genius in my town who would just buy 1 speaker from good will, go home and do some googling/listening and maybe come back for the other one. One time he got 1 hpm 40 and right on his heels I got the other one. As I was wandering through the store, I noticed he was putting it back. I still checked out that 1 only - cos I needed a woofer for my other one which someone had "radioshacked". I still have those hpm40's. Cool. Srinath.
  21. Ha ha ha very funny and we do have a cute whale doll and no not one just in a whale tail. The theory is, with a tweeter getting to 28k, it gets to 20 far more effortlessly. I can hear to 18k and my son just about 19. My wife is better than both of us by getting to 22 but you have to remember, it was on a speaker that has a 40k rated 3db cut off point, so it hits 20 k effortlessly. The speakers tend to drift downward @ their upper limit and drift up @ the lower limit. You need to feed power for the lower limit, preferably in high current and use a high slew rate amp for the highs to work right. Cool. Srinath.
  22. In some of the first gen yammies, you disconnect the jumpers, and you lose all the other channels as well. You cant just drive fronts with external amp and the other channels with the on board amp. They have it wired forward - front channel jumpers carry all the signals, the rear is fed by that after the jumpers. On the next gen - DSP 3090 on - You disconnect the jumper and you lose the fronts but all the rest keep working. Ideal to run fronts with an external amp and the rest with onboard amp. The thing is wired "backwards" - As in the 3090 can run 2 centers. Rear center and front center. They have the front center on an external jumper. Same with the front (or is that main) Don't immediately remember, but one of the 3. This really works well if you are ever intending to run a bose 901 and EQ I found. The massive power you need to run to the 901 as well as the external equalizer they need are tailor made to be run that way. Cool. Srinath.
  23. Pics please. I love the 511 and 811's. And the 80* drivers too. I'm a sorta altec, EV and then Klipsch guy too. Shhh don't tell the others. Cool. Srinath.
  24. Mancave with speaker. Cool. Srinath.
  25. Newer magnets could be Neo, they could be pushing N60, and older ones barely made N5, in fact nowadays N40-52 neo magnets are cheaper than the old ceramic or alnico. Alnico grade 8 is max, a neo starts in the high 30's. Very easy and very cheap to get them in the 50's. Manufacturing processes are also superior nowadays resulting in tighter and truer VC gaps. So you may be getting a better product - more spl and more clarity. However will it match you other component, and will it match the pair. That's the bigger concern. Cool. Srinath.
