  1. Oh, then get a B&W 801 matrix. I have owned 802 matrixes, and a friend of mine had owned 801's and seriously feed them the power and they will blow a stock Khorn for definition and clarity especially in the low bass and the high freq. Those woofers hit 18hz and the tweeters run easy to 28k hz. The only problem is, they drift all over the place for impedance and they are an inductive load. Cool. Srinath.
  2. If you're dropping 13g a pair on some crap hammered in someone's garage, its easy to beat Khorns. Just buy a used Jube or jamboree. Or a B&W 801 nautilus. Though you would need some serious power for the 801's. Cool. Srinath.
  3. Mint condition ones flew out the door for 2500 near me - in SC. That should tell you. Cool. Srinath.
  4. Adcom pre's are not that great. Someone also told me the pre amp section of a sx1250 is what contributes to most of the muddiness I heard. NAD pre's are awesome, their power amps tend to be a bit harsh even though accurate. Adcom amps are pretty accurate but not to the point of being harsh and shrill. Cool. Srinath.
  5. Oddly I don't really believe separates are better than integrateds or even receivers. However this is true I believe of all of the above. There can be something that will drive a difficult load without burning up but sound like mud. My favorite amp to throw into this pile is a Pioneer sx 1250. There can be good sound but lacking power, and a lot of tube amps fall in this pile and it wont matter to a Klipsch heritage owner, but any ribbon based or even hard/soft dome centric speaker set, it can. Adcom 535. 5500 etc. Sound great but totally give up when you run it into a very inductive speaker like a B&W 802 matrix. Good sound and good power - but wont handle a drifting load. Pioneer 80 series. 1280 and 1980 - maybe its the age of the components in these. KR9600 kenwood as well. The holy grail is to get all of the above. Good sound, good with drifters, good power, and all the rest of it. As always the search continues. My Proceed amp 5 was a bit of a disappointment to me for the year + I tried it with everything under the sun. Then one day I ran it off a NAD3155 pre into my carver amazing 3's and wow did it ever light those up. Those guys are power hungry, as per carver they ideally need 700 watts a side amp. This guy is rated @ 125 X 5. Run the proceed/nad on most anything else, it sounds ordinary. My carver silver 7 mono blocks ran a pair of B&W 801 S3's rather dismally, but they absolutely lit up a infinity kappa 9. A bit of synergy comes in there too I'll bet. Anyway, I'll bet you'd be hard pressed to get the Khorn's to sound better than your current equipment by a big margin I'll bet. Different - yes, better - unlikely. Of course tubes add a nice flavor that you will probably not find in an SS amp costing 10X as much. So for different, maybe go tube. That's it. Cool. Srinath.
  6. I have HR60's as well, but no Lascala. Jamborees may be the one that are going to try to carry these. But these things fit a LS like it was made for them eh ... Maybe I should fab up a LS clone and populate it with EV components. Cool. Srinath.
  7. The 902 isn't the best driver to go into a 511 or an 811. You really need the 808 or 802 or almost any 80*. I however get the fact that in any case they sign off ~14k. Need a super tweeter to fill to 25k (yea I need 25k, cos unless you nicely overshoot, it tends to start losing it before 20k). In fact B&W's Matrix series is speced to go to 28k. Cool. Srinath.
  8. 511 horn you say ??? Now, would a 511 work on a jamboree and would the corresponding 80* driver function to make it a good 2 way ? I mean in the same league as the K401 ??? or is that a 402 - the one that was intended to keep the jubilee as a 2 way. Cool. Srinath.
  9. LOL, the non cap coupled adcoms never caught my attention. 545 < 5400 (if they even make one). 555< 5500 definitely. The 5500 even looks better IMHO. GFA535 #2 < gfa535 (even if it has less output). Swap that 545 for a 5500 or a 5400 or a 5800 and give her a whirl. Cool. Srinath.
  10. The Harman Kardon tube amps sound awesome. The 1010 - I have not heard, but I have heard a 939 and its absolutely lovely too. What adcom ??? I cant imagine a 535 didn't sound good on the Khorns. Or a 5500, or 5800 which are the only ones I have owned. But if you like the 1010, try an sx2500. Or a Marantz 2230. Cool. Srinath.
  11. I have a Grant Fidelity tube dac 11 and IMHO, a TDA1541 double crown based dac is the best SS you can buy. If you have a CD player that has that, you could experiment with a tube dac and just to compare and play with it, IMHO, all the "newer" dac's are just trying to make you forget that TDA1541 isn't made any more. I have had $3000 dac's ES9018 based dac's - I think - get beat by the 1541, and worse yet, the 1543 is so close behind it. IMHO - the GF Tubedac 11 only serves to be "different" not better. IMHO. You may be able to get a TDA1543 based dac that you can be reasonably sure its not a fake, but a 1541 likely is going to be a fake. Cool. Srinath.
  12. Cos they're like the tires on your car. You don't still have 1976 tires do you ? OK that was a bit harsh, but there are components in a crossover that do wear and deteriorate with time/use. Cool. Srinath.
  13. In 2009 I got approached by the "white van". Oddly thanks to my inability to get to the ATM quick enough and the fact that I was in my home turf where I zipped in and out of little lanes to tell my welder to hold on for a bit, I am buying some high end audio - and by the time I got to the ATM, the scammers were very very leery of me. I then proceeded to talk to my wife in tamil as well as haggle with them some more. They thought I was scamming them, and they decided to find an easier target. Ha, the joke's on them, I could have bought their crap for 3 or 400 and been so happy ever after, instead a whole house and container are full with crap, as well as the other house and a 10X25 storage - though to be honest, its not all audio. Anyway having lost the deal of a lifetime, I proceeded to find a infinity RS625 later that same week in april/may 2009 that needed foam for free on CL, and foamed it, and I have been acquiring bigger and better crap ever since. Cool. Srinath.
  14. Or the "flippers" will crash and burn. 2-3 of these were in charlotte area. It was cheaper to buy on ebay and pick up or even ship it over. They got the message and pretty much gave up trying to flip audio (or are pityfully unsuccessful at it). Cool. Srinath.
  15. Cornhorn ??? I have stuff like this loaded up with anything and everything. Altec, EV, JBL, unknown drivers of monster size and stone age looks. Either way, crank em up and enjoy with a fine glass of bourbon. Sheesh why do I have to wait 4+ hours to have me some bourbon. Cool. Srinath.
  16. I'll be right there with you. And to make it even worse, I am an IT support engineer. Frazier - 6.5 - I dont think their woofers are anything to crow about. I would be inclined to replace with functioning new 6.5's you can remove and service/replace easily. Speakers with foam surrounds don't survive for very long in suspended situations if I did my eyeball calculations right. They need to be put on vertically and rotated top/bottom at some regular intervals. I have a Pioneer PAX20 (8") that has encountered the same fate. Someone stuck it @ an angle I believe up in a corner. The entire cone came flying out 2 mins after I hooked it up. Of course the electrostatic tweeters and internal XO were what I was after, and those worked, I sourced a correct 8" that can blend in with the electrostatic tweeters and it went in a cabinet I had sitting around. Cool. Srinath.
  17. I would at some point throw these 18" I got lying about into a simple cornwall style cabinet. Which exact 18" could have a hand in determining the cabinet parameters - volume and suitability for a folded doghouse style enclosure. Cool. Srinath.
  18. I had this a few yrs ago, may have been their 50% (bottle is sitting around in my old house cos my wife likes weird bottles) it was the round bottle going to a square by the neck. Anyway salty to my taste till lemon was added. I've had beer tonight, not going to the bourbon tonight. Had 2X hoppy blonde and left the weinhardt's ginger ale and the woodchuck for tomorrow. May add a few sam adams winter lager to it. I am seriously into rotating these, I never have more than 2 of the same brand/type usually in 1 night. Cool. Srinath.
  19. Not this time. I just got the cheapo but decent stuff. Ancient age. The guy said its made by Sazerac and it was in short supply till a few months ago. I dunno, I like it. I actually found 45% red roses small batch and buffalo trace both a bit salty till I put lemon in it, and rebel yell wasn't too far off and ancient age is even better. Just IMHO. Cool. Srinath.
  20. I am working on my 4th of bourbon. After years of trying to find the "perfect scotch" I've realized, simpler is better and a drop of lemon is what I needed. Yea sacrilege, I know, and the bourbon is sliding down smooth in-spite of the criticism. Cool. Srinath.
  21. The fact that these attained sought after status happened 20 yrs after the fact. They were not making history, they were just making good speakers. Cool. Srinath.
  22. Lots of things out perform lots of other things. You're standing on the shoulders of giants. Like Space-ex can claim a moon shot @ 1/2 the price of NASA, but space-ex didn't have to invent/develop wd40. Anyway, take a Khorn and put 2017 drivers in it with specs that are better and you may be 99% there, tailor your XO and you may jump over the hump into "better" land. Thanks. Srinath.
  23. OMG, Could I buy an X8 and X36 pair and att's for them if he had it in that box ? Cool. Srinath.
  24. I guess Monkey talks with this guy. Cool. Srinath.
