  1. OMG, Paul is still at it. Suggest watching muted, 2X speed, with closed captions, you've been warned. Um, the comments for the video have far more wisdom on this topic than Paul, no surprise.
  2. Interesting. Apparently before 1974 the claims of amplifier performance were all over the place, and just about meaningless other than a very rough guide. When I started this game in the late 70s, it seemed more standardized with the common "25 watts at less than .04% THD 20 hz to 20 Khz" and this seemed far more reliable.
  3. Second ( or third ? ) Mike. My take is the crossover saw a way over exuberant amount of power tripping the Zener and the wires there suffered.
  4. Very happy to hear of your success with the Russian MBGO-2 caps. I made a similar change from cheap Solen polypropylene caps to equally cheap Russian MBGO-2 caps, and the improvement was astounding: a more natural dynamic full bodied sound well textured, better depth. Can not believe all that cap nonsense I read about for so long was true....
  5. Molly Hatchet: Saw them a couple of times at small clubs, always a great show. The second time there were more people on stage than in the crowd. I pulled a table onto the dance floor immediately in front of stage. Duane looked pissed when he got on stage and opened the show....
  6. Ditch the Zener and use Dave A's tweeter horn on a DE-120.
  7. Hypersensitivity to sound or noise can be a bummer. While I find loud noise irritating (Doors slamming or closing loudly, and don't get me started on car exhaust system "enhancements") very glad I sleep soundly, except for the vivid dreams waking me up.
  8. When the Sony color monitors were the thing back in the late 80s, I could easily hear them scream when they were left powered up but the PC powered down. But no one else in the office could. Last family Christmas gathering one of those dang kids and their phone apps was testing how high one could hear. Think I fell off about 12 K, not too bad for someone old and stuff.

Um, forgot what this thread was about....
  11. No idea, but I wish I was your cat. Picture ? Also digging the receiver, details ?

So one could have a pair of new H4s or these....

    Will it ever end...?

    Klipschorns...

Um, hoping for just a little more detail for those refusing to step foot into the FB ever again. So blonde, so pretty, how do people keep stuff like that, fear it would be dirty, stained, coaster ringed at my house...Those are like a time warp dream.

Sweetness, truly a classic, very nice example, wishing....
  16. Picture of one of my Futterman H3aa's, the granddaddy of all OTL amps. Served me well for 25 years, then fritzed, the tube regulator tube blew up, probably easy fix of bad resistor. Set them aside, but pulled the other working amp out to test: It would warm up alright, sound OK, then start to sound worse. Fear it also needs a little attention, retubing. I have a set of tubes on hand, so just need to get the ball rolling someday on this. In the meantime, very lucky to cross paths with the Merz Mellow 20W OTL (6336 output tubes), I've had it about a year, and so nice. Craig Merz built them for me, seems he had some PC boards made, but still had a tough time selling perhaps a half dozen run. I bought his last PC board amps, and unfortunately passed on similar point to point version with different 6080 tubes.
  17. Perhaps Shakespeare was right about the lawyers....
  18. Sad but true, power cords on amps will affect the sound. Your mileage may vary....
  19. Just like most other mods or improvements I've made, was skeptical when I first heard about them, finally relented, then kicking myself for not realizing sooner. Dave A's tweeter horns and DE-120s certainly follow this trend.
  20. So garage sale etiquette well defined is apparently out the window....
  21. Respectfully disagree. Someone with a keen ear playing the record (never heard the CD) on a highly resolved system should be able to easily verify. I've demoed this to non audio nuts.
  22. Surprised they didn't capitalize more on Ozzy biting the head off a bat during a concert or whizzing on the Alamo. So Ozzy. Then that Sharon and Randy Rhodes deal, so Rock N Roll....
