  1. and was able to justify the cost? I don't see where PWK, JBL or Altec were interested in fancy wire names or types.
  2. I am not looking for responses at all, but I just happened to be cruising Audiogon galleries this AM. This kid has no right to brag on his dad's success (profligacy?) like this. Okay, maybe I am a tweak jealous, but high end equipment is made for those who can afford it, right? Here is one of those who can.
  3. If you are totally lost, pay someone who will do it right the first (or second) time. Avoid problems as much as possible by having a the work done in less time. The installer will give you tips on what he is doing. Ask for a schematic of the layout so that if you ever move, you can possibly do it yourself or get help from someone who can interpret the schematic. Those five hours mentioned above for install time? Double it if you do it yourself because you will want to experiment, ask too many superfluos questions and you will be posting here every 15 minutes. I am just trying to save you some headache. I vote for keeping your sanity.
  4. Where are you speakers? Are they close to the wall? If so, that may be one of your problems. There is a lot on the web to help with speaker placement. Just do a search on "speaker placement." One is www.stereo-speaker-buyers-guide.com. "Boomy" is a different problem than "tubby, dull, etc." Before you give up on your equipment and potentially spin your wheels and overspend buying new equipment, get the most out of what you presently have.
  5. Tuners are, largely, novelty items to round out your system. I have a few on the shelves, one of which will go into my system profile when I get one that I can truly say that I listen to on a somewhat regular basis. Truth is, AM and FM are so plugged with ads that there is very little enjoyment in listening. I would rather hook up a PC to my system and enjoy what the internet has to offer despite the limited sonics. This is not a slam on even the highest quality of tuner, it's just that, like TV, most drive time stations in our area are nothing more than radio shows of old with adult themes and implement the power-down-after-sundown scheduling. Get a decent tuner if you really like radio. Otherwise, rig up your computer to your standard system and get ad-free radio with NO static.
  6. Don't you just love the terms of endearment given to those who keep interest in audio, Klipsch products in particular, alive by the Forum managers? Welcome to the freak show, baby.
  7. You will find that on http://www.paulwklipsch.net. It is designed as a single center channel speaker. note: the server is slow at that site but it has some great historic photos.

  9. Comparing them to a pair of bookshelf speakers is a great selling point. I can't imagine even my closest friends understanding why I would have a pair of those.

    King's X

I saw them at a local club. I own, a few, okay, ALL their albums. They are very talented. The bass lines are heavy and a great test of your system's bass extension. If you want a real good KX album, check out DOGMAN. Another clever play on words. Mr. Bulbous is good also. So is Manic Moonlight. Yeah, Doug, the bassist, deals with issues. The guitarist, Ty Tabor, who has been playing guitar since he was around 10, is remarried, and the drummer is divorced. All this after saying that they would never allow the band to get in the way of their marriages. I have read a lot about them, as you could guess. Ty uses a unique electronic effect on his guitar and also mixes all their stuff these days. (Ty even has a signature guitar through Yamaha.) They put a song, Legal Kill, on Faith Hope Love which was about abortion. I think that killed (no pun intended) their mainstream support. But they even played at Woodstock II. I remember seeing them play and the crowd looked perplexed, like, "Who are these guys?" If they are ever in your area, go see them. It is worth an hour trip, IMO. There will be a WIDE variety of people there, young, 40ish, straight, not-so-straight, whatever. You would blend right in. Most go for the music, which is very good. Real musicians, this trio. And they won't puke on stage.
  11. I constantly see manuals for all sorts of electronics. It seems a lot of work for a few bucks. Do these guys work the night shift at Kinkos? Aren't these manuals copyrighted by the manufacturer? I could understand doing vintage owners a favor by offering them, but selling them seems to be a violation of something somewhere. As we all know, there are also a few sites selling copies. If not, I might make some gas money by selling a few copies myself.
  12. If you don't experience different sources, amps, speakers, etc., you will never qualify yourself as an audiophile, let alone, hobbyist. I may not know much about circuits, triodes, pentodes, PP, et al, but I know when I like something. I listen to horns and tubes with examination/appreciation of what each adds or subtracts from the music and i listen to SS with the same approach. Walk into an audio boutique, and the salesman, or, more likely, the owner, might spend more time giving you an education on how to listen than you intended to receive. He knows that if you are more discriminating, you may spend more money for his gear than at BB. Eric's post tells me that I have to be more judgemental.

Usually, from what I have seen, you could not approach good bass from anything less than a 15" woofer. The materials were not available to derive deep, tight bass from anything less than huge cones. Bass from these large drivers is largely an acquired taste and appreciated with some apology for the technology of the day. Midrange is where these horns really shine. I just don't think much was expected in the lower range from tube amps, maybe that's still the case. But I am getting way off topic here. The Dynaco is a good amp, just not, IMO, worth anything less than a rebuild with new parts making it virtually an altogether new amp. I have heard some fine modern tube/cone setups.

Jay Leno does a better job of seaming together disjointed soundbites into a skit that is funny. The Fatso-From-Flint is a Hollywood-backed nobody who is too busy counting his net worth to hang up his current gig. Geez, if only I could be that insincere.
  15. fini, I am no expert, but that Fisher will give you good sound and will also clean up your rack. (No jokes here, okay?) I have an 800-B and, from what I have read, your 500 is a comparable unit. The reason the ST-70 is modded, is because it NEEDS to be modded. The bass of the ST-70 in stock condition is flat, boring, dead, dull, made for 50 year-old speakers. The Fisher will give you a terrific tuner as well as a terrific amp just with some upgrades. No circuit REPLACEMENTS, as is often the case on modified ST-70's. I don't even think the ST-70 looks that great. I had one. I also sold one. I am working my inventory down and the Fishers are staying. It's kind of like Volvo owners can't afford a Mercedes. i.e., I can't afford McIntosh.

I would not hesitate for a moment to flip them for $1k pure profit as I don't have room for them either. Then I could buy some VRD amps. Or maybe put it toward the college fund.

  19. Thebes, I saw those that you are talking about. I watch the same "list" as you do, apparently. I would keep my $100 and wait for something a little more interesting. I have even seen Heresys go for as little as $200 on eBay. Heresys will legitimize you into the "Heritage Club." Then you can do all kinds of interesting setups with them and wax on about nuance. Yard sales, man, yard sales. If you talk to other yard sale trollers, you may be able to do some mutual scouting. Hey, send the twins out for you! Women are great palaverers.
  20. A note on the Lancer 77, make sure the surrounds are replaced on the woofers and passives by JBL technicians so they are in compliance with original specs. The LE20-1 tweeter is supposedly one of JBL's best. The L110 is a highly praised model on www.audioreview.com. I have a pair that I just put back into the living room. I cannot compare the L110 to the KG4 fairly without sounding biased toward the L110. So, since this is the Klipsch site, I will keep my opinions to myself. But if I was pressed, I would say something like, 'The KG4, IMO, just simply lacks "life" compared to the L110. I owned the KG4 for about a year and sold them. They never made me notice the music and they lacked "punch."' That is how I would compare them.

I have about four of five of these lying around. That could make for a few nights out with the family WITH dessert and coffee.
  22. You mounted the woof on the front and the horns on the rear of the motor board. Is this scientificly sound? I have read a few thoughts on horns' dispersion being affected by the thickness of the motorboard. I have a couple of cabinets that are a little larger than Heresys. I have crossovers that are from decorator Cornwalls. I am planning a "Cornwall" knockoff sometime in the future if I get the drivers (or compatibles) cheap enough. The motorbard is universal in that it can be unscrewed from the box, similar to your model. I like the open view to the horns. Could this be a precedent to have separate bass bin and horn "enclosures?"
  23. Cable and DSL services specify compatible modems and routers. You need to consult with your provider to see what is compatible. Usually they {lie} and say that you have to get one from them.
