Islander
It used to be easy to tell if a person was male or female, by simply seeing their relevant body parts, but in the last twenty or thirty years it's been discovered or decided that there's more to it than that. It really does seem to make it complicated for sporting organizations. No wonder the old cowboy thought he might be a lesbian... Brac
The process requires a physical medical evaluation and includes reports from a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, internal medicine specialist and gender expert. Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just do the "pole or hole" test?

There were always hermaphrodites and chimeras but they were not diagnosed due to the lack of medical attention etc at the time. There is nothing amazing within the last twenty or thirty years in the scientific community that says omg we missed that! All they need to do is a DNA typing that looks at thte amelogenin gene. If its an "X" she is a she, "Y" she is a he. No ifs ands or buts.

All they need to do is a DNA typing that looks at thte amelogenin gene. If its an "X" she is a she, "Y" she is a he. No ifs ands or buts. Actually, it's not at all that simple. The typical male is XY and the typical female is XX, but there are XYY and XXY and even XXYY men, and XX males (who look male but test female. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XX_male_syndrome). There are also XXX, XXXX, or even XXXXX (5X) women. See: http://www.medhunters.com/articles/intersexuality.htmlSome of these situations cause medical problems, some cause social problems, some both. It really must be confusing for sports officials, if doctors find it that confusing. Now it's been found that there are, in effect, two human genomes. This is because the male genome is pretty consistent with nearly all males, but the female genome has an amazing amount of variety, with great variation shown in as small a sample as forty women. We always knew women are complicated. Now we have the evidence.
jwc
Could be XX with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). In that case...a female with a hormone imbalance.....Is this fair or not? Of those situations with more than 2 sex chromosomes.....it would be very unusual that they could become an athlete. I've never heard of it. The XX male is usually with one of the X's with a "fragment" of Y...just enough to turn on the testosterone production at nine weeks of age. Super rare. The CAH isn't "that rare" I've operated on those folks before to make them "look" more male or female. Let's please not poke fun at this...these are unfortunately situations and become a social struggle throughout life. jc
