Where do we want to take the Forum?

Actually I think it is his cat's?

I defer to the cat.  Totally objective, she is.  My "golden ear" period is well past...though I feel like what remains is pretty well trained.  But I don't think you will find a post in this forum where I've ever disputed another's hearing experience.

Here's another, to give you a little of an idea what it was like before on a regular day, on bad days people got banned.

Also if you joking it wouldn't kill you to put some kind of emoticon giving some clue so others don't just think your bi-polar, or worse, sorry we couldn't see you smiling as you typed.

That would be very helpful.  I often read something and wonder if they’re joking or hate me … if you all knew me better, you’d understand why i have to ask myself that question.

Okay, remember that song from The Cowsills called “Hair?”  There this thread is legit again. But, please no more talk of where the hair is growing.  :D

Thanks, Chris. As usual, you are spot on.It is interesting how we communicate "past" one another. My original post was in response to the latest technical post turned personal attack thread relating to interconnects/cables. What began as a simple question, about which reasonable people could disagree, turned into a slam fest. This was due in part to a legitimate disagreement concerning qualitative (I can hear the difference) vs. quantitative (show me concrete proof) methods of thinking about sound. I respect these difference in views as many of my closest friends are engineers and firmly believe that if you can't measure it, it is bs (not bachelor of science). I, on the other hand, can't do much beyond +,-,x,/. However, as the Supreme Court said of pornography, "I know it when I see (or in this case "hear") it." The difference is that when my friends outside the Forum and I disagree, we don't attack one another's character, parentage, etc. I wonder if the discussions would be as nasty if the participants were standing toe to toe?Someone posted a thread from 2004, in which DeanG said he was coming here less and less due to the nature of the interactions. What have we lost by his declining participation? How many important/valuable members have we lost for similar reasons? Anyone remember AL K.?

ETH2, I think your original post was excellent and your objective admirable. However, I am not sure I understand your reference to Al K. If you are suggesting Al ran people off by his cvitrioliccomments then I would completely agree with you. If on the other hand you are suggesting that Al K was run off by responses to his posts, that is not my recollection at all. He began to attack the methods and explanations of two Klipsch engineers who used to post frequently and then he had his famous meltdown of 2006 where he "rresigned" from the forum.

He went over to Audiokarma forum from which he also resigned.

Here is a comment he made on DeanG's facebook page:

"Albert Klappenberger

As an old hand at starting riots on the Klipsch forum I got to agree! Doing that does have it's good side though. Being banned turned out to be a good thing! I wouldn't get back on there if they begged me!".

Yes I do remember Al K, all too well. If you want this forum to be a gentler and kinder place you do not want the likes of him around.

In a manner somewhat like this thread, the two threads that you were able to link here appear to be "postmortem" examination-type threads that may have resulted for reasons similar to the thread-behavior under examination here.  I suspect that those threads resulted from certain aftershocks of what had just been read in specific troubling threads from 2004.

From one perspective, many times the threads in question seem to still have a lot of good information and with a little due diligence by the reader it does not seem too difficult to separate the "wheat from the chaff" and still glean good information and cull the nonsense.   However, in reference to the 2004 thread links there doesn’t seem to be any traces of the original threads being examined during 2004 remaining on the forum.

From another perspective, the linked threads could reasonably show a reader that maybe not much has changed over the last ten years except for User ID.

Would it be a fair assessment that the original threads and topics that were subject to the comments in these postmortem examinations are no longer around and long-ago deleted rather than just “locked”?

If the threads were deleted, I realize that you may not know or remember; however, were the written assaults that cruel, specifically targeted and demeaning where a whole thread would be deleted rather than delete the specific offensive posts or just lock the thread?

I stand corrected.

No Al ran himself off. He boasts anout being banned from at least four forums. He directly attacked two Klipsch engineers on this forum.

He was incapable of playing by the rules suggested in this post. So I guess he was in a sense run off, Amy was unwilling to allow his attacks of Klipsch and two of it's engineers to continue. She told him and he left.

Those theeads do not exist any more.

Al K. excommunicated himself about the time that another DIYer-turned-audio-business guy (Greg from Maine) starting building crossovers that were "pretty" instead of being designed to perform functionally as crossovers--since Greg apparently hadn't done his electrical circuit analysis homework at that point (and I'm not sure that he ever really did...which is pretty scary when you think about buying $20K loudspeakers from him).  [in all fairness, Greg was a concert mixing guy in an earlier life, and apparently had a certain proclivity for a certain "sound" associated with that profession at that time.  Everything was "relative" when it came to sound quality.   YMMV.]

As I remember, Al got really heated that the K-forum would allow such "trash" on its forums (...understand that I can see some of Al's point of view here, except that he reacted badly instead of constructively...). Al then threatened to "resign" (...however you do that...) if Greg's "pretty crossover" posts weren't removed, and stopped posting to the forum at that point.  IIRC, that was ~2010.

I think Mark D's comment is spot-on.

I also think Travis is recalling history correctly.

FWIW, I loaded a forum to my web server (link below) primarily to sell gear but will add/revise the boards to suit a direction folks here would like to take it.

The moderation will be minimal (no porn, hate words, etc.) and no data-mining.

Let the arrows fly.

Chris,

That is true, Al's meltdown did include Greg Roberts and that thread still exists. The threads where he personally attacked Trey and Roy have been removed.

I believe the run in with Trey was over testing of K77 and other tweeters. Trey was going to test three different versions in the chamber and share the data with everyone.

The run in with Roy was over a passive he had designed or passed along to someone that ALK disagreed with.

As suggested by you, the op, and others in this thread, there are ways to suggest a better mousetrap, to discuss a difference of opinion on crossover design, etc. in a civil and diplomatic way. Multiple people suggested that to Al, and he was either unwilling or incapable of doing so. I just wanted to set the record straight on why he isn't on this forum. He couldn't tolerate anyone disagreeing with him or having a different opinion.
