Where do we want to take the Forum?

My frustration is that those with the greatest technical knowledge tend to prefer to engage in pseudo-philosophical or ad hominem attacks.

My frustration is with people that keep saying ad hominem.

I think the biggest problem Earl is the egos involved in the conversations.

Same thing Happens in Ham Radio, enveloped in the hobby to the extent, It is you life, no one can tell you chit.

Sooner or later you become someone no one wants to talk to.

(Dont want to be one of those guy's)

We are a mellow crowd here, pat yourself on the back, it could be worse.

I have crafted many a post and decided not to initiate the topic here.  It is unfortunate.  I value the opinions of my fellow forum members and welcome their input on any subject.  But it has been made succinctly clear that this is now a very limited venue.  Consider the facts.  The country and the world are customarily places of many controversies.  This is nothing new.  What makes a tightly woven and interactive community can be found in the taverns of old and on todays digital forums where boisterous debates are allowed to flow.  The critical discourse here is gone, taboo, moderated out of existence............. and it shows.  When you place limits on thinking, you limit interest and you lose participation.  This place is stagnant......... not a place for growth or for the sharing of cultural differences.  Can't discuss stuff - period.

I have enlikened it to a Far Side cartoon being on here at times. You have (and I say it in a good way) nerds that are technical in different aspects- tubes, SS, Pro audio, Reference, Heritage, and they are the "cool kids jocks" and we being the "noobies" having no background are the nerdy kids no one wants to really hang out with.

What I mean in this is that when some ask questions, they get hammered and told to do things, but with no explanation as to why, or having their initial question answered. But then there are some who will come in and take the extra time to explain, and they will get attacked because they are not in the same "club" the person hammering the original OP is.

I picture a cartoon group with leather jackets and smoking cigarettes standing up against a brick wall telling the OP to get out of here.Of course the characters are true to the Far Side and are animal characters with bucked teeth or glasses and the OP is a person in a suit almost stick like.

My threads have been mostly helpful with a few that totally went off somewhere else and didn't even answer the question I posted.

If this was just a tech forum, I wouldn't bother. I'm not a technical guy and don't pretend to be. On the other hand, I learn a great deal from those who are. If there is a problem, it's limited to a few folks who can't resist engaging in personal attacks on others. The solution to that is already in place ...good moderators who are willing to step in and stop the BS when the egos take over.

I don't think the forum is going in the wrong direction at all as long as we tolerate and encourage a diversity of backgrounds and opinions. Cheers....after all, it's Friday!

i’ve noticed over the years that this place has peaks and valleys … there are times, it is quite boring. Then it seems to pick up.

i’m probably one of the guilty ones weighing on your patience … as i just don’t enjoy being too serious for too long. I grew up in the principal’s office, was once banned at work from talking to people outside of the organization without my wording being approved by a manager--not for rudeness or profanity or anything out of taste (okay, i asked a rep from one of the local cities to please get me the info as soon as he could because that would get my boss off my back and my boss found out what i said) … I’ve been lectured on this forum for making a joke when the poster was asking a technical question -- I mean no harm to anyone and never intentionally try to upset anyone; i would just rather go through life laughing as much as possible because the crap that i’ve had to deal with would crush me if i don’t.  I personally have no expectations from the forum -- just a place to “talk” if we want; or see what other people have to say … about whatever. I just don’t like mean and have seen that a couple of times here; but far more times have made some friends.

This reminds me of my last job, as safety committee chairman i took the role seriously, my superiors took is as an evil they were instructed to do by there superiors. I would give my direct superiors a chance to remedy an issue when they failed I had no problem going to there bosses. needless to say this did not set well with them.

One instance I recall is we had 3 feet of snow the governor declared a state of emergency, federal govt was closed yet we were supposed to drive in 90 miles to work (my commute was 90 miles 1 way) I was charged with missing time. Tried to discuss this with the bosses and they had no response other than you are required to be here (safety first right  :emotion-45: ) as luck would have it a corp. memo was emailed out and because I was on the committee I received a copy, it basically stated if MANAGERS could not make it in due to weather they could use a personal day, Me with my big mouth / Fingers typed up a response noting our situation and posed the ? why were craft people expected to risk life and limb while Managers were allowed to stay home.........................I was called to the office the next day and informed I was losing my email privileges because the response went to something like 17000 people......................They did not like being called out as hypocrites. I loved pointing it out to them

We just need a new crop of newbies with question and project.  We bicker every now and then but, what family doesn't

I think we need a new set of newbies that we can spend their money for them.... :D

I agree since we spent all of our money!

It seems that we are getting a bit stale. I have been a member for only a year, but it seems to me that we have gone from interesting threads about music, amps, preamps, tubes, concerts, members histories...to silly arguments about who said what to whom, whose opinions are sacrosanct, silly retorts to serious questions...I miss discussions about music, hearing about grandchildren, ill people getting better, learning about equipment...

I agree that the forum has undergone a change in makeup/contribution within the last year.  I suppose that Klipsch corporation is okay with the way the forum has changed since there doesn't seem to be much comment or policy with regard to this (unlike many other audio forums).  I too find that most contributors here now don't really use the forum for discussions on audio.  I don't presently see any swinging back towards technical discussions that you describe anytime soon.  I personally don't use this forum as a personal Facebook page, which is something that I don't have and never intend to acquire.  My personal conversations--including off topic smalltalk--aren't found online.

The problem that you state Earl is that this Facebook-like behavior on the Klipsch technical sub-forums tends to run off good technical contributors, and doesn't attract new technical contributors with knowledgeable audio backgrounds.  It would be nice if the contributors here that are not asking real technical questions or trying to answer the questions would find other threads to fill with irrelevant comment.  I don't have a solution that keeps the technical contributors here: they vote by leaving (and have).  One of the best Klipsch engineers (Roy D.) tried to contribute here again this summer but has since left the forum again due to stray comments and poor social skills by others on the forum.  It's a great loss IMO--for that's where I really learn more about audio.

Chris

I certainly disagree that FB like behavior on sub forums tends to run off good technical contributors.  The most popular and longest running threads have been the feel good threads such as 3 Minutes To Miller Time, Right This Minute, and Cables And Coffee.  Places where the non technical members can contribute and feel they are a part of the forum.  Just maybe along the way they may learn something about tech.  The forum is divided into sub forums for just this reason.  If you don't like it in the "Lounge" don't go there.

Please provide the names of the technical writers who were offended by non technical post and left the forum.  I have been here going on ten years and only know of a couple technical contributors who have left and not for FB like post I might add.  If Roy had sent me a note to say my coffee discussion was annoying him I would certainly have given that position some consideration.  Shoot....we even have Mark using emoticons these days!

What I enjoy is feeling good in the "Coffee" thread but occasionally going to the 2 Channel forum to see what the "big boys" are chatting about.  Heck Chris I have learned some neat things about digital and the data base threads from your post and am glad you contribute.  You are certainly a resource to this forum as is the timid newbie who wants to ask questions that have been asked a hundred times or wants to say his family member is ill, or that his beloved pet has passed on.

This is a community with many different needs and abilities.  I think we do a great job of providing space for everyone who wants to contribute. Long live the forum.
