mdbrien
Can someone help me by recommending a really good phone preamp. I would like it to have MM and MC. My budget is $500-$750. Thanks,
jimjimbo
A few questions....which amp, table and speakers are you wanting to pair it with?
mdbrien
Aragon 8008MK2 amp, Mcintosh C46 preamp, Technics SL1200MK2 with Ortofon 2M Black cartridge. Klipschorn speakers Thanks Edited December 22, 2015 by mdbrien
Mallette
2M Black certainly wants a nice preamp. Many choices in the range you want to spend that would work for me nicely so I won't be specific. As you are all SS I presume tubes hold no charm for you, so you are even more open in that price range. I'd just go with the best reviews you can find on what you want to spend. captmobley
I've been researching also, and the Musical Surroundings Phenomena ll is top of the heap at the moment. Infinitely adjustable for virtually any cartridge, it's gotten excellent reviews.

gmc
The Lehmann Black Cube is definitely worth looking at. I have the original version, but the SE version, with upgraded power supply, is supposed to be much better, and is within your price range on the used market. I've used mine with a Shure V15 III and Denon DL160 MM cartridges, as well as a 0.24 mV output ZYX Airy 3 MC cartridge. It has sounded excellent with everything I've thrown at it. Schu
Shannon Parks tybe based budgie has great loading range and sounds wonderful!
vondy
I don't know much but I just got the Emotiva phono pre while it's on sale. Sounds great on my modest setup. MM and MC. Way below your budget but built very well. https://emotiva.com/products/pres-and-pros/xps-
JohnA
I have an Aragon 47k I used with an A-T OC9, until I gave up on vinyl. Still have the original boxes, etc. PM me and we'll discuss it.
tom b. 57
I picked up a used Musical Surroundings Nova Phenomena, (original version), about a year and a half ago for $500.00 and have been very happy with it. Tom
Trentster5172
I just got the Emotiva XSP-1 analog pre and it is awesome! I'm pretty sure it basically has the Emotiva XPS-1 phono pre built inside. Sounds incredible! mdbrien
Shannon Parks tybe based budgie has great loading range and sounds wonderful! I appreciate everyones comments and recommendations, Thank you! At it's price point and reviews, I'm really thinking about trying the Budgie Tube Phono Preamp. Since my equipment is ALL solid state, will there be any issues using the Budgie Tube Phono Preamp?
pbphoto
Is the phono stage in your C46 lacking? Or are you just looking to get into MC cartridges in the future? I'm asking this because after not playing a record in 25+ years, I have a turntable coming tomorrow and I'm just planning on using the built-in phono stage to start out. I run all class d and it is completely black... zero background noise. You will be happy. One thing is to try different tubes for different sound. The budgie is excellent with both MM and MC carts.
