Funny thing. I used to care a lot about sound in the car. First major effort included EPI LS70 loudspeakers installed in the rear kick panels of a 1976 Caprii II with a 80 watt amp and Pioneer tape deck. Really sounded good and kicked major butt.

Now, however, I don't listen to music in my car. I have a Subaru SVX with CD player and halfway decent system, but mostly I either drive with the radio off or I listen to CBS news radio 88. About the only time I have to just listen to the news and find out what's going on in the world is when I'm driving. At home, 3 year old occupies all available time.

Hummmmm.....

I used to be into it, and then one day I came back from a 2 week Florida vacation and most of it was gone. This was in my Prelude and consisted of the following:

Alpine Tuner/Cassette Deck (can't remember model)

Alpine CD player (can't remember model)

Boston Acoustic Pro Series 5.2's up front

Boston Acoustic Pro Series 6.2's in the rear

Alpine Amp (65 x 2) driving fronts

Alpine Amp (85 x 2) driving rears

2 Rockford Fosgate 12" subs in a custom box with Punch amp (300 x 2) driving them

Alpine 12 band EQ w/Sub control

About $4,000 total (including labor)

This thing sounded fantastic and I got about 4 years of use out of it before it was stolen. When I collected the insurance money, I never reven replaced it. I went 3 years without even a radio in the car, and then I gave the car to my sister when I moved to Florida.

If you ask me, it's a wate of time and money. It's just a matter of time before someone steals it from you...

Both cars have the stock systems in and both are slightly too good to throw away but not good enough for really enjoyable listening.

The Chrysler has, I think, infiniti speakers (big ones for a car) with a clarion head unit and a 6 Cd player in the trunk.

The Land Rover has a Harmon Kardon system with lots of little speakers dotted around and a 6 CD player under the passenger seat.

In some ways it would have been preferable for them to have had nothing so I could have gone and bought a better system but with what they have it just aint worth it.

I, too, used to have a kick-butt aftermarket system in a long-gone Jetta... Preamp-only top-o'-the-line Kenwood deck, CD changer, two ADS amps, Quarts in the front and Infinitys in the back... Spent about 1500 bucks on it. Sounded great.

Then I sold the car and ended up with a Ford with an all singing and dancing JBL system with a subwoofer installed by the factory, and was happy with that, too.

Now I have a Focus and the stock system sounds much better than it has any right to, considering it's the basic CD player stereo that comes with all the hatchbacks. It sounds quite good and I can't imagine spending a grand or more on an aftermarket system when that money is better spent in my HOME.

I dunno, maybe I just grew out of it? Probably not, as all that money is now sitting in my HT system. Smile.gif

We wanted to get atleast the E320 but the E240 had better resale value as more people can afford it when you want to sell it.

Used to get into car stereo about ten years ago.

But I got too paranoid about having a 1500 dollar stereo in a 300 dollar car.

There is too many distractions to enjoy music while driving a car, and most out there now are just trying to impress or annoy.

(Sorry, but rattling deck lids and sheetmetal does not excite me at all.)

I turned a '66 Ford Econoline into a big PA speaker once, great party wagon!

(The only problem was, it sounded best from about 200 feet away.)

What I like, is these kids with a stereo with two teeny 5 inch mids, two 1/2 inch dome tweeters and a pair of 18 inch subs.

Talk about imbalance!

What, you got a problem with cheap woofers in a 50 cu. ft. vessel?

I was at Best Buy looking at car subs, what garbage...
