captmobley
How about this from Monoprice.comhttps://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13194
Schu
Holy schnikees... how do you make a $83 tube amp? Child labor?
gfxmla
Yes, and its probably a cheap solid state unit with illuminated non-functioning tubes simply for show.Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
djk
It's a hybrid, solid-state output stage, no costly output transformers.
richieb
I could say so many things about an $83 tube amp but my Mother told me if I have nothing good to say than don't say anything. I have several things to say ----- so I'll say nothing -
Alpha220
Then there's the $49.99 tube amp from Monoprice --> https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=109&cp_id=10919&cs_id=1091903&p_id=16152&seq=1&format=2 I mean, would it be wrong to just try it?! It did OK but, could not handle that big bass driver nearing loud level. So, it may and may not work. A sub can be used to help take the load off of it but, many 2 ch people want a full range sound from the speakers.

mike stehr
Monoprice mentions on their site; "Life is too short for audio products that don't sound great!" Too short for cheap Chinese pre-amp tubes feeding power slop amps
dtr20
I have the $50 Monoprice hybrid amp. I thought the same thing, at $50 with free shipping, just try it. I haven't used it too much, but I did like it.

Question: Can anyone help me understand what makes some amps with fewer watts sufficiently power a (larger) driver that other, more powerful amps cannot? What else is going on (besides watt ratings) that accounts for this difference? EDIT: Larger output transformers? Power supply?--Is that the difference? If so, can you tell by looking at the spec sheet? What does that look like?
Schu
dampening factor...

What else is going on (besides watt ratings) that accounts for this difference? I can't explain it but, the amp was a good amp and I'd kept. It drove my Forte and RF 7 speakers with two 10 in. drivers without problems. The RF 7's even have a low impedance of 2.7 ohms. It is my guess that the hybrids act more like SS amps at high power demands since they usually have a SS rear and tube preamp section. Endo
^ Schu and derrickdj1, Thank you. I've been reading about damping factor--makes about as much sense to me as vinyl grooves storing hi-fi audio signals. At least, now, I have an awareness for it. Deang
Define "cheap". I really hate these threads - almost completely worthless. If all you have is $100 - buy a Topping Class D chip amp.

Before reading this, I didn't know Ohms were directly related to damping. At least that part makes sense now. Stopping and starting anything is going to be more difficult if there is more of it to contend with, I guess. Not the same, I'm sure; but, reminds me of inertia. EDIT: High impedence headphones... Oooooh, I see.
