homatose
My first impressions are great. I did not get a chance to run ARC or clear settings but will in the next few days. If only swmbo was similarly enthusiastic!
homatose
... a few moments later... I am super impressed with the KI-396, and overwhelmed by the encompassing live-like sound these can output. Even before running ARC, I had a smile on my face and after running ARC the smile is even larger. Coming from a pair of electrostats that gave me some trouble over the past almost 20 years of ownership, these are a real treat and check many of the boxes. It also helps that they are nowhere near as fragile. Here is one channel of result of running ARC (red is sweep, green is correction, black line is target curve). I can always tinker with this later. Only complaint and this may go away with time (not sure) is the skunk stripe down the foam backing on the grill. If it still bothers me with time I'll replace it with something less "shiny." Worse in person than it is in the photo, but a reminder these are pro-level cabinets. cheers all!
homatose
Oh I should mention setup. PC connected to Anthem MRX720, power from a pair of VTV Hypex NC1200 monoblocks.
babadono
skunk stripe? what up wit dat? Never seen it on any other pair. It can't be cleaned/removed?

To be honest, I have no idea; they arrived like this. While it's strange to remove a grill to wash something that's brand new I'm not opposed to it.

babadono
@Chief bonehead , Roy is it Ok for @homatose to wash his 396 grills? Any idea what the white stripe is from?
babadono
BTW I heard a pair of these at a friends home. He had added a tweeter for a little more high frequency "sparkle". They were paired with a 684 sub. Sounded excellent, especially for a garage system. As Roy would say "they sound OK".

I would pull the grill cover to make sure nothing bled through to the drivers if its just the foam that's an easy fix either wash it or a little paint if need be. Not sure it would be worth the hassle and expense of returning the whole speaker(s) for just the foam / grills, for me anyway.

MookieStl
Anyone interested, I just posted a pair for sale in the Garage Sale section (no stripe)
Edgar
I'm in the market for some new speakers. Can't afford Cornwall IV, so I'm wondering how KI-396 compares for sound quality. @MookieStl, yours are local and tempting, but I'd want them in white. Thanks, Greg
MookieStl
Free audition if you're interested. No experience with CIV. I like these much better than the C1 I had years ago but from what I have been told, the new CIV is vastly improved from there. I also have a paint booth. 🙂

Edgar
Yes, thanks, I though about painting. But it seems like such a terrible thing to do to such a nice piece of equipment.
