legend9
I noticed Klipsch's grilles have a lot of plastic moddings , unlike my previous Polk's grilles, where the plastics are only at the corners, instead of in front of the drivers. Does this effect the performance? I agree the gilles feel and look like a higher quality kind, but does this have a drawback ? Anyone did a test w/ and w/out them on the speakers? Toxic Mule
Are you referring to the reference series. I have rf-3 II, rc-3 II, rs-3 II, and a rsw-12. The grilles on the rf-3's did have a lot of plastic in them, so I removed them. I enjoy the sound quality much more. Also I like the way they look with the grilles off, just striking. I removed the grilles off the rest of the series, since i think it looks best to have all speaker the same.
Vladi
I had my grills off untill last weekend a Lego cube thrown by my 3yr old landed on my center chanel speaker, making a big dent in one of the woofers. Grill are now on permanently.
Bruinsrme
Are you still interested in the RF3II? Scott
legend9
Scott, check your email . Yes, Reference in general. I did try to take the grilles off the center RC-3, and the sound seems to be clearer ( may be my mind playing tricks...). I dono..... Bruinsrme
I would love to be able to leave my grill covers off but having a rug rat and young nieces they offer the last line of defense to keep the speakers safe and sound. Legend I am sure this will make you a little more comfortable with your new speakers..... scott

Toxic Mule
yeah if one has kids, the grilles probably need to be on. Man, a lego?
Lpusedyou
Hmmm so does anyone really have an exact answer to his question? I have RF-82s and wonder the same thing occasionally. You would think if it affected the sound that Klipsch would not build the grills/covers like that right? Anybody else think they sound better with them off? I just may try it and see. No kids to worry about...for now at least -__-
Rick
When I do critical music listening, I always remove the grills from my Heresy IIIs... I can definitely hear a little more detail and air in the highs with the grills off... Really... [8-|]
bosng
definitely hear more highs with grills off on my rf7 ii's
JJkizak
I really liked the Klipsch idea of keeping the grills about 5/8ths of an inch away from the front board to keep too many pressures from building up at loud levels. JJK
Cal Blacksmith
I guess I have tin ears, I can't tell the difference on or off so I leave them on. We no longer have a Lego user in the home so that isn't an issue but my tin ears keep me happy thus reducing the bite of the upgrade bug![:$]

Moderators dtel Posted September 2, 2011 Moderators Share Posted September 2, 2011 You would think if it affected the sound that Klipsch would not build the grills/covers like that right? Well for all we know the design could include the affect of the grill cover in the final tuning ? [] [:#] Hmmm so does anyone really have an exact answer to his question? Apparently not over the last 8 years anyway. [] Really if you think about it it is such a very small difference if any, compared to other things that make a big difference, like the room, quality of recording and equipment used. Lpusedyou
Lol ^^^ good point man. I totally didn't even look at the date of the last post my bad. Haha well I just may take a second listen with all my grills off. Looks like the general consensus is that it does affect the sound quality some. CHASLS2
Never had my grills on. My RF7's look pretty with them off.

The age of the question don't really matter, did not look like anyone came up with a good answer over the years did they [] It may affect it slightly but probably very little overall ? Probably less than a few beers affects the sound. [] Nice avatar
Rich_Guy
I have always preferred my mains to be naked, they just seem so much hotter that way. [] My other speakers have varied at times but currently my center and surrounds keep covered, they are a little more prudish. []
