Something happened to my old computer and the pop-ups have all of a sudden become intolerable. Now when I try to click them off my computer freezes up half the time. I can hardly do anything on here. I've tried a couple supposedly free ones only to find they are not really free. Warning!!! I am not computer savy.

Panicware. But i recomend you reboot everything and start from scratch. I had the same problem when it gets out of control like that you can't even get to one page. I had to have my computer guy do it for me because i don't know alot about computer. Fortunetly for me he didn't even charge me. Also if you have a cheapo internet service that is the cause or if you have kazza downloaded another cause. Just thought i let you know this is what happened to me. Oh and also try going into internet propertys and deleting files, offline files, cookies, and your history. I hope this helps.1.gif

You have several choices. My first suggestion is to download the latest version of Mozilla, it's a super great browser, free no ads, and you can set the level of pop-up blocker you want. Go to Mozilla.org and download version 1.6. Open source sotware developed by computer enthusiasts and is based loosley on the old but great Netscape browser.

Google's also a good choice, and I think the latest version of Windows Exploer has one. Also almost every major portal (Yahoo, Aol etc.) now provides one.

The other thing to check is for a virus, update your virus definitons and run a scan. Also a spybot can really slow down a computer. Download and run

Lavasoft Adaware 6.0 www.lavasoft.com (free no ads). Finally, if you're running Wndows XP enable the firewall, even if you have dialup. If you don't know how to do this pm me and I'll walk you through it.

One other thing and this is for everybody on the Forum suffering from spam.

Download SpamPal(free no ads) and the Help section to go with it(two seperate downloads). SpamPal's a little tricky to configure but once it's up and

running it will drop about 97% of spam into a seperate folder. I've been using it for about three months and it has caught over 3,500 pieces of spam!

Try to run Adaware 6.0 in your computer to find out all the spywares first. You may use some programs like popup killer or google one to cut the popup but they are just the indicators for spyware for me. I don't block them because by the time I'll know they have spyware in my computer. BTW it's up to you 9.gif .

Spywares used to have on porn site only...... newer one is really flooded, even some major sites infected without being known...

Sounds like you have a nasty case of spyware/adware. I'd get either Adaware as mentioned above, or Spybot. I personally prefer spybot, as it has stuff that Adaware charges for, and you can immunize IE against future problems (that is, if you use IE, I'd switch to Mozilla Firefox).

Anyway, these programs remove nasty spyware from your computer that track you, spring pop ups and generally suck.

I've been using Mozilla now for something over a year and a half, and I like it. Zero pop ups, and it protects my privacy far better than IE ever would. Most people don't realize that IE stores hidden caches/histories on your hard-drive. Here's a web link with some information on the subject..

Oh, and you must change the first part of the above link where the asteriks are - just think of John F. Kerry's favorite slang word (when he's not calling Secret Service Agents S.O.B.'s) and you should be all set!

Even if one doesn't mind the fact that Internet Explorer stores one's browsing history in a (virtually) non-deletable fashion, its irritating to think of all those megabytes of cache files cluttering up the hard drive.

Here's another tool I've found that's quite useful in clearing these caches - Purge IE

http://www.purgeie.com/

Finally, I run Norton Internet Security on my home network - in addition to providing firewall and antivirus protection, it blocks banner ads, and malicious scripts. I've been using it on both my machines since February 2003 and it has worked very well so far.

Good luck!

Go with the Mozilla Firefox browser. From what I understand they're going to stop developing plain Mozilla with built-in email program like Netscape. They have seperated them into Firefox and Thunderbird for email. Firebird is 2-3 times faster on a Mac than Internet Exploder. It's also faster on Windows. Several of the guys at work tried it after I told them about it and won't use anything but Firefox now. Also tabbed browsing is great!
