ottscay Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 I keep noticing that most photos I see posted on the boards (of Reference systems, anyways) don't have their grills attached. Is everyone doing this to make the photos look cooler, or do some of you just leave them off all the time? Is there a (noticeable)difference in sound quality? Scott Quote
tommyboy Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 I dont' know about doing it to make the speakers prettier, but you won't notice a difference in sound w/ them on or off. You would need like dog hearing for that! Quote
Moderators Amy Posted February 25, 2005 Moderators Posted February 25, 2005 I notice the difference! As far as the pics, it's also to show what the cones look like, how many there are, how big, etc. Quote
ygmn Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 Off....kids push the dust caps and put little dimples in it.... ON....Kids do not touch..... 1 Quote
RayoVac Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 I took mine off just for the pictures... just cause I wanted to be cool like everyone else!!!! Quote
Thoriated_Tiger Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 Speakers have grilles? Off. No kids, no pets. I like seeing the drivers.. espcially big ole horns. The sole exception is a pair of infinity rs1000s I use at work. Too homely to have naked. They look plain wrong without the grilles. 1 Quote
Ou8thisSN Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 i used to keep the grills off but after putting them on, i realized that the light from the projector lens reflected off the cones and was more disctacting than cool, so the grills are on now... Quote
nicholtl Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 There's a definite difference, even without dog ears. I leave the grills on my surround speakers, but for the mains and center, I have them off. Trust me, on a revealing system or not, there's a difference. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 i for sure can hear a difference with my grills on and off, i can't say which is better because they both sound good, but there is a difference, but i leave them on because the designers usually incorporate a grill on them for the overall sound, and therefore i just go with how the design was meant to be..... that does not make me right Quote
donnie Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Hey Ottscay, I agree there is a differance on/off. You know when mine are off, I find I am cranking the volume up more often. Probally just like watching the woofers get a little workout, ha ha... I will say my RW-12 sub draws more comments when the grille is off. Also enjoy the air movement. thanks donnie Quote
colterphoto1 Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 mental note: Amy cares how BIG your cones are! Does that mean that size counts? Michael Quote

jacksonbart Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 I believe I notice a difference, but would I get it right on a blind listening comparision? Honestly don't know, but if I kept my eyes closed during the entire listening session I probably would never make the change to either take them off or put the on. And my wife says I never listen. SteelerFan Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 They definately look cool with the grills off. Alot better than my Forte's do. But I leave mine on mostly because it's the best place to store them (for me) and I worry about the fragile plastic fasteners. Quote
dblue Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 I can definitely hear a diff. An easy test to hear the diff is the try it with promedias...they're easy and you sit close! Big difference. Quote
ottscay Posted February 28, 2005 Author Posted February 28, 2005 I can hear a difference with my promedias, but I'm not sure it's a proper comparison. The cloth of the grill on the promedia isn't significantly thinner than that on my rf-35s, but the rf-35s move a heck of a lot more air, so the effect of removing the grill should be more pronounced on the little promedias. Not saying people can't tell the difference on bigger, speakres, I'm just babbling on about the phsics of scaling... Scott Quote
dantfmly Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 I hear i difference too. but not a huge difference. And i like it either way, and my wife hates them off. so they stay on. i have klf series, and there in not much protection from those grills, so i just leave them on anyway. Quote
gcoker Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 There's two trains of thought. 1. If you got it flaunt it 2. You know you got it and don't flaunt it. Both are good. Quote
