flannj
Which should I chose on a dvd audio menu that offers both? And why? - Jim
Frzninvt
Typically DTS because it has less compression and better dynamic range than Dolby Digital.
rplace
On the DVDs that have both I find I like the DTS better. I am always a little bit more fired up to get a disc in the player if has DTS.
damonrpayne
The max bitrate for DTS is about twice that of dolby digital. This does not mean all DTS tracks are much better, but it does seem that DTS soundtracks are across the board better to my ears.
BobbyT
another vote for DTS for the reasons stated in the previous posts
SilverSport
DTS for movies...I have to turn the volume back from where it would be with Dolby 5.1 and it sounds great!...Bill
Def Leper
No contest on any disc I've checked. On those that let me switch between Dolby and DTS on the fly, when the DTS kicks in, it's a very noticable improvement in quality.
ccsakura
There are some exceptions ou there but not too much. You are pretty safe with using DTS whole time. Those disney movies and THX cert'd movies are better bet with having better on DD, but not always.
oldbuckster
DTS is the better setting. On music DVD's I shut-off the center channel, DTS sounds great on concert disc's.
KungFuNat
there are pros and cons to both formats, but you can be sure if the DVD has a DTS soundtrack, they have spent more time mixing it which usually means better sound. over all, i find DTS to have better separation between the speakers. flannj
Thanks for the replies, It sounds like DTS is the way to go the majority of the time, but I should let my ears be the judge for the occasional DD use. - Jim
rcarlton
I generally go with DTS when i have the option. No real reason. Haven't done an A-B comparison. Both sound good to me.

ottscay
It may depend on your setup to some degree; I usually select Dolby 5.1 (or better yet, EX), because my reciever does an awesome jobe of deriving 7.1 sound from a DD 5.1 track. It's more immersive for me, so it's "better". That said, I too have heard audio gains on DTS tracks, so you really need to let your ears and your specific setup needs drive the answer to that question. chops
I have several movies with both DD EX and DTS ES tracks. Sometimes the DTS track sounds better, and other times the DD track sounds better. I guess it really depends on the mixing of the two. One that I can think of right off hand is "Blade Trinity". The DTS track lacks some bass and the center channel mix sounds a little honky, whereas that the DD track and better and deeper bass and the center channel sounds natural and crisp. 33klfan
I usually prefer DTS if the dvd has it. It just seems better. Like dts discs are usually louder and just have better sound in my opinion.
