Roc Rinaldi
We don't do WFO much, but sometimes we just can't help our selves. My hearing is great, I hear things that scare most, from soft to real soft. I rarely do 90 dB with my khorns, now I do get carried away in my HT room. For 55 years young, I may hear better than most. I am careful with my hearing. Love music too much to chance it. We were definitely haven fun. I don't normally subject myself to that loud of a range. Sure sounded great. BTW, it's silver gray not white, blame the flash LOL[] That SPL was taken 16 feet back, 123.9......ouch what?
meagain
The sound meter shows us it was loud, but I have always found percieved volume on systems with low distortion always seems lower than systems with great deal of distortion. That's true, but 125dB sounds damned loud no matter how you slice it. Right. My Mother in Law lives in Vegas. She complains about how hot it is in Illinois when she visits. When queried how 85 degrees is worse than 110, she says 'it's a dry heat'. Uhhh... At 110, it hurts to inhale no matter what the humidity. What crossovers are in them? AK-5? Or ??? oldtimer
I think it was Gary Shandling who described it like: "Oh yeah, give me that Dry Heat, just love that Blow torch heat, so much better...."
Mallette
If you're too old, and it's too loud, it's because you didn't listen to stuff at 124db when you were too young. Dave
ZAKO
I may be one of the oldest member on this Forum.....I like it loud...because in order for me to hear it i have to crank it up....The deer across the Mark Twain Lake look up,. startled, The eagles take flight oh what a sight to see. jacksonbart
Why is when we are young, we like to listen to loud music when on average our hearing is at its best, yet when we get older we complain about it being too loud when your hearing sucks? CaptnBob
I'm confused! Are we talking about the 60th anniversary K-Horn, or the 60th made? It's been established that sound with a lot of grunge in it is generally perceived as louder than low distortion sound at the same spl. Mallette
About 1978 I was doing sound for a film crew shooting at Altus AFB, OK. We were on a taxiway about 300 yards from an engine test stand. They fired a big GE engine to full throttle without warning. Before diving into a pickup truck with the windows closed (and a temp of well over a 100) and my hands held tight over my ears I read 164db on my Nagra IVL meter. I've little doubt I suffered damage that day as one of my ears is down about 6db over the other. There are charts that can provide more specific info, but the basics of hearing damage are that high levels over a long period, or very high levels over a short period, have essentially the same effect. A given level of damage is a time/level curve. 100db is well within OSHA curves requiring hearing protection for prolonged exposure. Klipsch Employees Trey Cannon Posted March 1, 2007 Author Klipsch Employees Share Posted March 1, 2007 Trey, I'm very interested in the room treatments as well. Can you tell me if the treatments behind the speaker and in front of the window are for particular frequency ranges? After reading the old Tractrix article that Gil posted I am much more aware now that the exponential horns project vertically heavily...which I didn't know before. I'm just wondering what frequencies those treatments are meant for. Thanks for any info. We just tossed the corner traps in the center of the room. Not the best place for stereo, but we had to put the Khorns in the corner.
formica
I knew who that was even from the back , almost didn't recognize him all dressed up from the front though. This does beg the question to why do you recognise him best, undressed from the rear?? [][] ... <runs out of room>
Moderators dtel Posted March 1, 2007 Moderators Share Posted March 1, 2007 ok maby that didn't sound right................let me say it over.......He was the only person at the pilgrimage that had all silver, white hair like that, and he wore Kipsch t shirts that weekend, he was not in a shirt and tie when I met him or seen him all weekend at the pilgrimage. I did have a chance to talk with him a little, a no BS kind of guy ! Maby a little BS but to the point !

Just in case you really are confused...those are 60th Anniversary K-horns....the piano finish is a real piano finish which was outsourced by Klipsch...the dead giveaway is that PWK logo in the middle on the bottom of each speaker, with the shiny little l/4 quarter carat genuine diamonds!!!! Unless my vision is so poor I am seeing things in the pics that aren't really there.

Moderators dtel's wife Posted March 2, 2007 Moderators Share Posted March 2, 2007 That is not funny Travis.[] Honestly, I was more impressed by the genuine piano finish. We saw these (or another 60th anniversary pair) speakers in Hope and they are beautiful, even without the diamonds. However, those diamonds did sparkle in the photos posted which leads me to believe these are 60th anniversary speakers. Although, I am sure the diamonds would lend themselves to WAF in some cases....maybe that was a marketing feature Klipsch incorporated. BTW, I do like diamonds, but they are not my favorite gem. Jay481985
I know a guy who ran a pair of 15" adire tumults in 7,8 foot cabinets tuned to 16 Hz. A pair of 2500 watt Peaveys for each one. The subs were about ten feet apart. Measured with a term lab meter at 15 feet back he pulled of 125 db at 25 Hz. I don't think folks are quite aware of how loud or how much pressure there is with a 25 Hz sine wave at 125 db. Stupid loud...... That's sub frequencies.....music at 123 db seems just a little excessive. When does one's ears start distorting themselves? I rode in a rig with six 15" subs built on a wall tuned to roughly 37 Hz.....even low frquencies will stab and pierce your ears at 135/140 db, especially when your 2 feet from the wall.....that rig clocked in 150 db with the term lab meter. Real impressive stupid loud..... But the king of impressive SPL numbers is the F18 Tomcat...or a pair... I trimmed grass on a AFB once. Was trimming 150 yards from the very back of the flight line once, and was caught off guard by a pair of Tomcats that casually taxied up side by side, and then took off together. Wasn't wearing hearing protection that day. That was wanting to run for cover sick loud....... no condoning just silly things with too much bass pressure

Very cool - I felt that was one of the better sounding rooms during the pilgrimage, which is probably why them Synergy speakers shined so well. I'd love to hear the khorns in there...or any other large comparable speakers. Y'all aren't setting up for the pilgrimage already are ya? I've got spring break coming up in two weeks or so...the tripod sounds like a good excuse to swing by and get the parents to pay for the gas.
