kfoss99
So, I got an e-mail from our wedding D.J. today and he wants to know what music we want for the wedding. I like a lot of music, but most of it is not danceable, and if my fiance will not listen to it, it is unlikely I'll be able to have it at the wedding. If you can help me out, what music did you have at your wedding that you liked? Did you hear something cool at a wedding you attended? Any help is much appreciated. colterphoto1
I used to love about 10:30 at the receptions when the DJ would put on 'Tootsie Roll' and all the aunties would leave in a huff after seeing the dancing that was displayed. If you crowd is not a dance crowd, don't expect them to dance at your wedding. You can't have a DJ force people on the dance floor. Some weddings are best left like big family reunions with soft jazz or easy rock as a volume that people can talk over.Remember, they came to see YOU and your Bride and spend time with you. They can go to a disco or concert any time. So when in doubt, turn it down. Clapton, Krall, Miles, Fleetwood etc seem to work well. Or pick easy going tunes from your college days that your friends will relate to, whether they dance or not. And tell the DJ to shut up, too many of them talk through the entire night... [in best choked up AM dj voice] And now ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce to you for the very first time.... And now ladies and gentlemen, for their first dance... And now ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom will cut their cake... And now ladies and gentlemen, blah blah blah And make sure your photographer knows the order of events at the reception so he can be ready for the action. You can't blame him if the garter is tossed while he's out at the bar picking up your cousin Millie. LOL
colterphoto1
If you don't know what type of music your fiance likes by now or you can't agree on the celebration - cancel the festivities. Ok, kinda kidding on that one. Above all, once the wedding day arrives, relax and enjoy the day. Take it all in- it'll be over before you know it and you'll want to treasure every moment. Spend as much time as you can with family and friends, not the photographer or caterer. Hire a coordinator for the day if you can, it'll ease headaches. Remember, you want your wedding to be remembered as FUN and ELEGANT (two most common words used to descibe the day) - all the guests want is to have some time to celebrate with you. Make sure to meet with everyone, and the receiving line does not count. Spend at least one minute in a real conversation with everyone you know in attendance if you can. Best Wishes, Michael
Jeff Matthews
Disco. You can't go wrong with Disco in weddings. You can dance to it. Those who like to dance will definitely like the music. Those who don't like to dance will have more fun because Disco is more up-beat and less focused on political and social messages. It's just for the fun. But, if your crowd likes the kind of dancing that goes best with meat 'n taters, Country. Classic Rock... stay away from it, except only on the most definite danceable tunes. These would be the ones that the girls liked most when we were kids. Remember, in case you debate with your bride what music to choose.... Weddings are for Brides, and Grooms are along for the ride. They can go to a disco or concert any time. So when in doubt, turn it down. Call me a party pooper but I agree with Michael 100%. At my wedding (held on our back patio), we hired a 3 piece jazz ensemble and if I can say so myself, the entire evening was a home run. More words of Colter-wisdom... enjoy the evening!!! My wife was a nervous wreck...(we were still planting flowers on the back patio 1 hour before the first guest was to arrive and actually getting out of the shower AS they arrived) Anyways... once the first guest arrived, I said to myself (she wasn't paying me any attention) "it's showtime" and I completely forgot about the flowers and anything like that... I just focused on the people that were there and genuinely had a nice time. She still doesn't remember most of the night because she was so uptight trying to worry if everyone was having a good time and if the flowers were planted in the right spot or not.... Interestingly, (we've got a pond/waterfall on back patio), there were some frogs croaking during the evening as well as during the actual wedding cerimony. I later heard that some of the guests actually asked out loud, "I wonder why they still have those frogs croaking over their speakers...you'd think they'd turn them down during the wedding" (sigh..... real frogs)

kfoss99
Colter, I know what types of music my fiance likes, she (we) particularly like the Talking Heads, so we'll be playing that for sure. The problem is that my taste in grunge and metal is not shared by her or my guests. For the most part we're going big band and oldies, because everyone likes them, and especially big band music is easy to dance to. Thanks for the suggestion on letting the photographer know what's going on -Karl
