  1. Doesn't every high school band have La Scalas? Several years ago I bought a pair of bar beaters from Michael Colter and refurbished them for our sons' high school band room.

  2. The routing is not hard if I could do this on the first try, with practice it would get better, I would hope. I was bored and stuff happens when I have nothing to do. The vertical boards are red cedar, it's a 24' bench with a garden pond on the other side, there are railroad ties behind those boards, I need something cheap to cover the creosote ties so no one would rub against them. This was 6' fence boards @ $3.50 for 6 ', cut down to a little over a foot made it cheap to cover the front of the bench. The top of the bar was burned also and covered with many coats of marine spar varnish. The burning turned out to be easier and cheaper than stain., so I burned everything.

  3. In case you're curious. I don't really believe that all high school bands have La Scalas. Before the director asked for my advice, some other father suggested a Bose surround system for $4,500. I asked, "What's you budget?" When he replied, "$2,500," I choked and then said, for that money we can make their ears bleed. He and the students love those speakers. IMO, it would be a shame if "tick-tock" replaced music from the La Scalas. In the interest of full disclosure, at the request of the director, I later added the braces shown in the attached photo to address sidewall flex in the bass bins. At the volumes sometimes played, the well known La Scala problem was clearly evident. I also later performed the djk bass mod. I highly recommend both modifications. Before anyone asks. No, the La Scalas were not really used in the Miata. Call me hyperbolic.

  4. Took three toys to my grandson--he’s back to normal. just as quick as he got sick, he’s fine now. I guess he was eating all day long. While i was leaving i pulled out a hearing aid because my ear was itching, dropped it in the driveway...now it doesn’t work. Warranty long ago expired. Hopefully it is an inexpensive fix. Now that i have these things--i’m dependent on them.

  7. OK another pic for Steve since he is a Raiders fan. . When my brother and sister in law moved here from Alaska and decided to stay they had to change license plates and they gave me the old one's, this is from his wife's jeep, she is a Raiders fan but I still like her. What town did your brother live in? I think it was Fairbanks, it's my wife's brother, and his wife. They said they just had enough of the cold after 20+ years, crazy thing is his wife lived in Hawaii before moving to Alaska, quite the change. Internet went out for about an hour, hate when that happens.

  8. So I go to a meeting about my son's upcoming H.S. band trip / performance at Disney World and throughout I am staring at flown LaScalas. Later I swapped emails with the band director and asked him about the Klipsch. They were installed when the band hall was built about 1980 and are used to play a metronome to the students .

It looks like you’re walking into a prison. Most of the chicks are scary looking too. That’s Oakland. Better to go to a day game, night games require you to go back to the BART station which is where this guy once scared the crap out of me and i was on the second floor of the station and he was in his car at a stop sign. I still split as fast as i could.

  10. That's very cool, especially the pattern. I learned something today! I used that burn technique on horse stalls a few years ago, but I used a flamethrower type of torch, 500k BTUs!

Cool plates. But I have to say the wood rafters are slick, but the roof material is awesome!

  14. The beams were just structural and had nothing on them and one day i got bored and took down the boards and did that. All we were looking for at first was a place to sit in the shade out in the garden with a couple ceiling fans, it just turned into that after a granddaughter got the tiki idea. I didn't like the bright silver metal inside the roof so i stuck some bamboo I trimmed up there, the bar is fake bamboo made from 2" PVC. We started collecting things and friends and relatives gave us other things that just got hung up. It started like this, one section to see if I liked it.

All those carvings are very cool, they add a lot to the joist, like they're more than just structural beams. I recently finished an outdoor recreation area job for a family. The husband kept saying he wanted a tiki hut for his bar. I ended up building an all cedar shelter, I just couldn't put his idea of a tiki hut into an actual structure. I really like your idea.

  18. Dude did you really ask that? No I didn't. It was sarcasm. It was intended to illustrate the wastefulness of using La Scalas to merely keep time. Apparently, it didn't work.

  20. My wife is my hearing aid. She tells me that everything I need to hear comes from her (and she is deaf even after 3 implants of those stirrups, anvil, ear part things). wow, that sucks. Specialist offered to do a stapectomy on me--cut out the bone and replace it with metal. he said it wouldn’t restore hearing but would keep it from getting worse. however the tech at the hearing aid place said it can improve hearing as much as 30%. Probably about time to research it--have plenty of insurance.

  22. It's just treated 2x6's, I used a router, it's about 1/4" deep for that pattern, there are other designs on the other side and the board on the front. After routing the design it's burned with a hand held torch to make it look older. The kind of torch used to sweat plumbing pipes. When you burn it it's like staining, the harder and softer grain turn darker and lighter, this looks better than bright new wood, well it's a couple of years old now and never changed. I will get some other pics for you.

  23. Sounds like a great area. Just curious Elden, what kind of wood is the ceiling joist the license plates are mounted on? How did you do the fancy graining? Almost looks like a herringbone pattern.

  24. Thanks, there is a metal roof on top of the bamboo, just can't see much of it, It had to be dry to hold speakers. You must have speakers where there is a bar and hammocks, I think it's a law ! UPS just delivered a box from Klipsch with more stuff I can't talk about to give away at the pilgrimage................... sorry

  28. Well, I am now six months in and working harder than ever...but at what I WANT to do rather than what I have to do and no longer stuck in big nasty cities to do it. Social Security blew my mind. Fast, courteous service and when the lady kept saying "But wait, there's MORE" my jaw kept dropping. Monthly extra for my son until he's 18 that will be enough to pay for 4 years of college, and the same for the PAW until my son is 16. Medicare is MUCH better than reported and those I've dealt with a LOT more responsive and courteous than insurance people. And expenses are way down. Life is GOOD in retirement! Dave

  39. Well were leaving this evening for N Louisiana, son-in-law's graduation in the AM. Then it's 2-3 hours North into Arkansas, going to see if any help is needed to be ready for next weekend, I know they will be plenty to do to get ready for everyone. If I don't get back here, that's the excuse.

  44. I bought my son a pair for his RB-81 II's. I removed the spikes and made some rubber feet so they wouldn't slide on his hardwood. They are great stands and are very sturdy. The speaker wire routes through the stem. My neighbors are Paradigm dealers. See the speaker on the left? ... It's an RB-81 II on one of these stands.

  46. MLO: Awesome, and $1,000 isn't that bad. Think of what it would have cost if they hadn't diagnosed the same problem before? 4 hours at $139/hr. = $556. Broken plugs --- cha-ching! The thing is paid for, and if you had payments, I bet they would be more than $1,000 a year too. USN: I notice he was even tempered and patient all up until the time that nut got stuck on the ball joint. LOL After that he cussed like a trucker. I teach kids to cuss before they start. It will make the vehicle behave itself, and you will have a much easier and fruitful repair. I have cussed and thrown wrenches and stuck them in walls.... I always cuss the vehicle out first, then start fixing it!
