  1. Speaking of a daily double.....you guys serious? Thats a long ride......ever been south of the Mason Dixon line? You fellows make it and so will I. I may have one more wild weekend left in me before checking into the retirement home....but bluesboy and I couldn't fit in my one man backpacking tent on a dare.
  2. Just got the November issue of Stereophile mag. Sam Tellig interviews Mike Sanders about his new Quicksilver Audio SET mono amps. 9 watts and $2800 and a very handsome amp. Mike listends through LS last time I talked with him. The wheels are turning.....trade him my horn monos for the SETs? Go from 25w to 9w?
  3. Welcome to the forum Pistol.......You may want to try your question on 2 channel or general questions to see if you get more responses. That is a serious ding but I am surprised that no one has offered advice. I think that patching it up may be the best you can hope for without replacing two sides of the cabinet but I am not a wood worker. Looks like black stain? Considered new veneer? How about it guys? Help the new guy and maybe he will answer the other pressing questions: cds or vinyl? Tubes or solid state?
  4. "gestalt" I like that word. Back in the 70s a friend of mine that later went on to play with some famous folks wrote a song that upon hearing it I named it "Gestalt". A loose interpretation is the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Neil....if you are out there....I really miss those days. Or were you thinking of the word zeitgeist?
  5. Just a few basics Tom. Clean your tape heads and all metal parts of the tape path.....I always do that prior to making a recording. Use can use a Qtip and head cleaner(I got a large bottle from Radio Shack). Rubbing alcohol will leave a residue (lanolin....a skin conditioner) and should be avoided. Demagnitize the heads and path once and you shouldn't need to do that again for awhile. Carefull not to scratch the heads. Record at the highest speed possible for the highest s/n ratio (probably 7.5 ips on your deck). Set the imput level so the needles barely go into the red zone of the vu meters on the loudest passages (just like you did on your cassette deck). You probably know all this but I am assuming you may not. You should be up and running at this point but if not there are many rtr folks here that know way more than I do. Let us know how the deck sounds and send a picture if possible. Tandberg for $50!! Great score. Chuck
  6. That sounds like a great deal Tom. Is this your first deck? Have you tried recording with it yet?
  7. I have the QS Audio Horn Monos. Have tried the orginal Tesla el34s and have tried the JJ kt-77s from dougstubes.com. The JJs were a small improvement to my ears. Have wanted to try Tung Sol 6550s and some swear by the 6L6 (brown base). I changed the 12DW7 (small tube) to Phillips JAN (joint army/navy) milspec tubes. I also have the QS Audio preamp and have replaced all tubes with nos and used stock from the 50s. I wish I could say everything was an improvement but by the time I changed everything out I couldn't remember what the previous tubes sounded like[:^)] I am content for now and had rather spend my money on cds from the thread "Best new releases for 2007" which I just did. They should start arriving next week[]
  8. Don't know many guys that listen to rock and roll and drink a brewski or two at 6:00AM. Party on OB......you da man!
  9. Mrs. Buckster must be away.......EH? Go easy there old fella.....pace yourself...and in the afternoon we can start on the aged stuff[:^)]
  10. Hate to see you parting with the QS Audio gear so soon. Don't know if anyone has both the Scott and the QS to answer your question about being a downgrade. I have the QS Horn Monos and also a HK tubed receiver from the 60s and they are just different. I could be completely happy with either. I suspect for daily use the QS will prove to be more reliable but can't say that for sure especially after Craig rebuilds your Scott. Another option is to find a QS Full Function Preamp at a good price (it has a great phono section)....roll it with some mullards and telefunken tubes and live happily ever after. Gotta go now.....the horn monos have warmed up for an hour....time for music.
  11. Yeah....guess I will have to start charging more for my expert advice[] Thanks for the assist with my avatar. No longer the grey guy lurking in the shadow. Now back to Skramer's question.....anyone?
  12. Hello Skramer and welcome to the forum. Klipsch and Fisher.....sounds like you have some fine equipment. Not familiar with the Academy but I am sure others here are and will give you their opinions. Again, welcome!
  13. Hello back Riviera and welcome to the forum. We can always use some fresh voices. Its' been kind of slow around here lately but that should change with summer and vacations drawing to an end. Glad to have you join us and don't be a stranger.
  14. Thanks for the reviews Luther. I have heard some of your vinyl via the tape exchange and was very favorably impressed. Mike, Mark, Danny, Luther....do you have a favorite place to buy vinyl? Chuck
  15. Interesting thread but don't think anyone has captured one of the reasons I like vinyl and reel to reels. Listening to music is a passive activity....little to do...little to see. Cleaning lps....watching the platter turn and the arm compensate for slight warps in its up and down journey as well as watching those big 10" reels turning is visual stimulation. Its nostalgia. It's more involvement in the process. I do not enjoy noisy lps and very few cds from the 80s (prior to 24 bit technology). But when vinyl gets it right....there is little as pleasing to me. I like what DrWho said about running digital through reel to reels to add a little of that analog sound.....been doing that for a while now. Surprising what a well recorded cd sounds like on Maxell tape. Listened to a Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Baby Face Willette compilation on my reworked 35 year old Teac yesterday.....made from lps and cds....very fine sound.
  16. That is hard to believe....that someone gave her up....but don't know the circumstances. Anyway it was a win/win situation for both of you and I know she repays you everyday. Congrats to you both[Y]
  17. I am using the same tubes in my Quicksilver Audio amps and have had no problems. You might talk to Doug at dougstubes.com who reccommended that tube to me as a replacement for some el-34s. Go to his site for a telephone number and give him a call.
  18. A very fit and handsome girl there Buck[&]
  19. Yeah Buck.....if you are going to be taking a day off....please get it approved ahead of time[]
  20. [<)][^][D] Dtel gets an AARP card and Amy a drivers license[*-)] A day late but hope it was a great one for you both.
  21. Buckster posted yesterday on "General Questions"......the Levon Helm pictures thread.
  22. I work with a bunch of ECU Pirates.....yes the same Pirates that beat Carolina 34-31 this past weekend. God....they beat Carolina for the first time in 32 years and they act like they have a team. I would pull some pranks but the boss is a rabid Pirate too. Have already planned when I leave the company to put Carolina and Wolfpack stickers on his suv with superglue[]
  23. I am resurrecting this old post and will repeat the musical selections tonight and hopefully make this a 9/11 tradition. Join me if you like. Sorry about the repeat and blank post. First time I have tried this....anyway to get rid of unwanted post?
  24. Welcome to the forum Youngjj......not familiar with that amp but by the model # it sounds like a vintage amp produced about the same time as my HK FA30XK receiver. Post pictures if you can. My receiver built in the early 60s in Plainview, NY is used in my second system and sounds great. It still has the HK branded tubes.
