  1. He is good at his job! I think that would take me a little longer.
  2. Excerpt from Rolling Stone: February 12, 2013 12:15 PM ET Rick Huxley, the bass player and co-founding member of the Sixties pop group the Dave Clark Five, has died, the BBC reports. He was 72. Huxley, a heavy smoker, had battled emphysema for years, though bandleader Dave Clark said the bassist had recently been given a clean bill of health. Clark called Huxley's death "devastating." "We'd talk once a week," Clark said. "I spoke to Rick on Friday, he was in great spirits." Founded in 1958 after a previous incarnation, the Dave Clark Five were part of the British Invasion movement that brought the Beatles to America in the Sixties – in fact, the group appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show just two weeks after the Beatles in February 1964, and the Dave Clark Five's song "Glad All Over" knocked "I Want to Hold Your Hand" out of the top spot on the U.K. singles chart a month earlier. The song was one of several hit singles by the Dave Clark Five, along with "Bits and Pieces" and "Everybody Knows." The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. "Rick was a dear friend and an immensely talented musician with an amazing sense of humor, he always made me smile," said Clark. Huxley was born in the British town of Dartford in Kent, and remained in the Dave Clark Five until the group split in 1970. He then pursued a career in real estate and the music business. With the deaths of saxophonist Denis Payton in 2006, and singer and keyboard player Mike Smith in 2008, Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson are the only surviving members of the band.
  3. I was amazed when my wife showed me her etch a sketch from the late 60s' that she still has in mint condition along with the original box. I asked, "Didn't you USE it?!" I guess I didn't learn to take care of my toys until later in life.
  4. Mapleshade? gotta' love the $150 triangle! ...excuse me... "Trilateral Diffuser" Looks like a toilet seat from Bizzaro world.
  5. Thanks for the replies. Hmmm... I'm wondering if no one has ever left the entire inside of the doghouse black while veneering the rest? I'm considering not touching it because right now it is in perfect condition. It occurs to me that I could play with Photoshop and combine a couple of different LaScalas to see if I come up with a look that I like. Sometimes I can imagine how things will look but other times not so much... I just have to see it. Another question: How have you successfully removed the Klipsch badge (brass laser style logo) without damage? I'm thinking about a thin blade and a heat gun set on low but I'm afraid to damage the print or bend the plate. What was your experience? Any thoughts?
  6. I just purchased some 1976 black La Scalas a couple of weeks ago that were very clean and in great shape except for some veneer chips. I'm going to be veneering these with some nice cherry (maybe cherry) but am undecided about some details. I'm thinking about leaving the doghouse black but veneer the sides, top, face of the motorboard and front edge. I'm not sure how I want the grain to run. Has anybody left the inside of the doghouse black? I'd like to see what other folks have done as far as grain orientation, grill work, and any other creative ideas. Post your pics and let's see what you got! Thanks in advance! []
  7. Glad to hear you decided on the rebuild of the 500-C! It is certainly worth it! You are really comparing apples and oranges with the 500-C and the SX-1250. I have almost the same $ amount invested in both and wouldn't give up either. As far as solid state the SX-1250 would be the very last to go. Mine was a complete rebuild (with upgrades) from Many Moons Audio in Tulsa and it looks as good as it sounds! It would take a minimum of $1,500 to get it away from me if it was for sale. $800 is great deal on a recapped unit with good cosmetics.
  8. All worked out.. Talked to Dan at mcintoshcabinets today. He was very agreeable and flexible on coming to a resolution. He offered to have me return it or he could send a replacement. To me, that seemed like a lot of hassle for everybody so we agreed on a small discount. So we can just consider it a little scratch and dent sale, I suppose. Luckily, the scratches are on a side that I won't see much or I would have gone the replacement route. You have to be paying attention to notice. I can recommend doing business with them without hesitation. You still might want to talk to tk49 as he has done some interesting cabinets for amps.
  9. I like the original look but better build materials used by mcintoshcabinets. So I got a 500-C cabinet from them but I am unhappy with the finish. The construction seemed very nice but there were scratches on one side that I think should have been obvious after staining. Looks like they occurred during sanding... as if they pressed too hard or slipped with the sander. I haven't had much time to worry about it but these posts prompted me to go ahead and contact them with pictures of the scratches. I can let you know what I hear from them. As another alternative, I suggest you contact tk49 here on the forum. He built my VRD cabinets and a matching cabinet for the turntable. You might see what he can do for you. He is great to work with and did a beautiful job for me!
  10. Wow! Choosing between keeping a SX-1250 or 500c is a nice problem to have! These two are completely different but both are awesome in their own way. I suggest you try to manage to hear both with Khorns.
  11. I've experienced hiss with an ipod as source on some systems. Other sources on the same system were silent. Same with the iphone. Don't forget to consider the source
  12. Great deal! I'd get it properly rebuilt no matter what you decide to do with it... it will still be worth a lot more than what you have in it. Congratulations! There is a fun factor with the Fisher and the Scott that is hard to describe.
  13. Got 'em! Great shape except for a couple of chips. Thanks for your help Bill!
  14. I installed it but removed it within a week. I now use mostly Foobar. Perhaps there was a default setting or I made a wrong setting change because it started modifying all my FLAC files. I found that it was deleting the images I had embedded in the FLAC files and automatically installing its own. Since I interrupted the process it left some of my files without images. Something I want any player to do for me is let me see the music by FOLDER NAME. I have everything named the way I want it by folders and I don't need itunes, J. River, or any other application telling how I have to view my music. I didn't find a way to get past how it will show any album with "Various" artists multiple times and with only the one song. Does anybody else hate this? Their support folks didn't offer any help or even answer my email. I know J. River is supposed to be a good sounding application. In my experience these players do not sound the same even when set to identical output methods. I don't know what they could be doing differently with the file they are playing. The difference is slight but so far Foobar has sounded the best to me. Too bad I couldn't get past my issues with J. River because it seemed to sound pretty good too.
  15. You would need a speaker-level input to the sub. I think two subs are better than one even if they are smaller. With the SX-1250 you could use the B speaker connects to go to the subwoofers. That is a LOT of receiver to go with Heresys! I have a newly recapped one with some Heresy 1s and it is an incredibly powerful sound! I've had a Sunfire sub with them that kept up nicely.
  16. Very Nice! It is fun to watch your progress!
  17. I still want both Pandora and MOG. The way Pandora picks songs and how I've tuned the stations with thumbs up and down would be hard to give up. For everything else, MOG. I started using the Logitech remote app for iPhone and the squeezebox touch. Working awesome for MOG and Pandora. I don't use the touch often but it is on the whole house setup so this makes it handy.
  18. I bought this book not too long ago so I haven't had a chance to look through it much. It is not so much a book to read start to finish but multiple subjects from which you can pick and choose. Can't hurt to try some of his tips and they don't cost anything but my time and effort at this point since I already paid for the book. I really need to attack my room problems!
  19. I am trying out the Psvane 12ax7-t "grade A" version and out of the box I like them better than other current manufactures I've heard. I only have 20 hours or so on them and supposedly they need 100 or more hours to break in fully. They sound promising but I am hoping that they improve. It will be another month or so before I have that many hours on them.
