  1. Arthurs, I'm really glad everyone is safe and little was taken. Thank God he ran rather than taking your wife hostage, or worse. Tony and others, You seem to have done the right thing at the right time. I REALLY liked the "run to the Cops" part! Firearms are a valuable tool and should be used and protected like one. They have a proper use just like a chainsaw. Chainsaws are useful and equally dangerous when misused. I despise a Glock's trigger. prodj, Funny, I was thinking of other persons of color, not blacks. Do you live in the South? Don't be so touchy. Race means little, or nothing, until you cross the line of society's acceptable behaviour. Then, it becomes another identifying feature. I would have never guessed you were black; 16, but not black. If you can learn not to take offense, you will not be offended until it is directed at you personally.
  2. "The specified 35 Hz to 22 kHz frequency response is at +- 10 dB, This is not your father's A7." Actually this sounds JUST LIKE Daddy's A-7s. All of them I ever heard had no bottom at all and had a slightly dull sound.
  3. Just call him William F. "Buckley" McDermott, minus the politics! No offense intended, Gil. I haven't figured out what you may think of Buckley.
  4. Rob is right. You need to inspect each driver to make sure the + of the crossover is connected to the + of the driver. You will have to unscrew the squawker and remove the tweeter to check. Looking from the back is not sufficient.
  5. Oh Yeah! That SACD copy of DSoTM is going to cost me a lot of money! My CD/DVD player doesn't play SACD.
  6. That is a great deal! I hope you gave him good beer! Please post photos and details. Inquiring minds need to know. I heard K-horns again for the first time in several years this weekend. They are Kings.
  7. I think it's hocus-pocus; they are not engine bearings that need a few hours of gentle treatment to polish up. Nonetheless, the Gurus say playing is required to break-in speakers. So, play the crap out of them! Play everything, at any loudness! We all got to hear the RF-35 HT system in Indy. I'm hugely impressed. You're gonna like 'em, too!
  8. Realistically, one 170 wpc amp is MORE than enough for a pair of CF-4s. Can you actually stay in the room with them when pushing one of those amps? If I were you, I'd run one amp, ebay the other and try bi-wiring. The speakers are properly set up for bi-wiring.
  9. Arto, You are the ONLY other person I've encountered with a Decca Int'l. arm! I wish I'd seen this thread before Indy. I'd like to talk to you about it. I have mine in a thorens TD-124. Initially, I used a Sonus Blue Label cartridge with it and it's the only setup I've heard that could track the 1812 Ovature LP with digitally recorded cannon. Sonus went belly up and I bought an AT OC-9 for it. It's still going strong. I bought the Thorens and the arm in college for $200 (?).
  10. Well Clu, we all have to get home! Naturally, it was over too soon. The new Klipsch subs are going to be KILLER! We had a really interesting demo from Dion of the soon to be released RW-12. It was so much better than similar competitors, it was obvious. One of the competitors' subs had louder distortion than fundamental! It sounded like a car stereo sub! I failed the A-B-X speaker wire test miserably. After lunch, I got 2 of my own CDs, but ran out of time and didn't get to do it again. One of the speaker wires were the same as the ones I use! Klipsch's hospitality was the best, too. Thank You Klipsch, from Miss Judy and Mike Klipsch to Jim Hunter, Trey, Steve, Dion, Mark, Kerry Giest, Joshua, and many others I can't remember or didn't meet, everybody was great and we all had a wonderful time. This trip was every bit as fun as the trip to Hope, but for different reasons. We got to hear ALL of the Heritage Line in one room. It was great! I had never heard them all and the last time I heard K-horns, Belles and Heresies in one room was at Audio Systems in Nashville in 1977! Each are different and as good as La Scalas are the K-horn rules the room. I had not heard them in 25 years, but I now know why the obsession is there. I COULD build false corners! Many of the rooms had new Reference Series in them. Finally, I heard them in a good environment. I was not impressed at Tweeter, but I am now. They are worthy of being called Klipsch. Go getcha some! The RF-35s would make most anybody a really good stereo/HT system. It was good to see some of the old forum members and meet others. Of course, NOBODY looked like they were supposed to. Jhawk92 and HDRBuilder may have been the biggest surprises. Builder, aka Andy, had only shown pics from the 70s. Actually, he's cleaned up pretty nice these days! His Heresies are much prettier in person than pictures. I'd talked to and e-mailed Jhawk92 (Rob) several times. I expected him to be lots younger and shorter. I don't know why, we all seem to be close to the same age. Klipschindyfan and wife were highly entertaining and took us to a great Irish Pub. Trey tried to get us all "cut". I rode my Triumph to Indy. The weather was perfect for it! I stayed freaked by all of the bikers wearing sleeveless t-shirts, shorts and athletic shoes and NO HELMETS! Here I was looking like something out of "Mad Max" with my protective clothing and full-face helmet and I was the only one! It truly ought to be the rider's choice, but I would never choose to go with no helmet and shorts. It was a great trip and the ones that didn't come have every reason to be jealous! Pictures to follow.
  11. The speakers cannot fail to fall off at an inverse square rate. However, you did your test indoors with room reflections added in. That is the cause of your odd measurements. If you can get a sine wave generator and use a single frequency, you should see the proper fall-off with a few bumps as room modes show up.
  12. Don't panic! You can buy Atlas diaphragms for the K-55-V for about $55 + about $20 installation. Klipsch used to charge $75 installed for a diaphragm and $170 for the driver, but I understand the prices have gone up recently. The K-77 diaphragm is available for ~$25 by itself as a T-35 replacement. Klipsch had a much better overhaul kit for ~$75. The Klipsch kit is no longer available from EV. It is the diaphragm and the carrier already soldered together; easy fiels replacement. I don't know if they still have them. Call and see.
  13. Hey Don, You've proved the horns ring and have reduced that ring by prestressing the horn. This is not a permanent fix, though. A better solution (now that you know you need one) is to remove the horn and apply rope caulk to the back side of the horn. The rope caulck actually absorbs vibration and converts it to heat, plus the extra mass lowers the resonant frequency (hopfully below the crossover point).
  14. A few good pictures can help identify the drivers. Otherwise, ....
  15. I had one of those!!!! It was not considered a really high performer at the time, but good for consumer gear. It is plenty of power, you should give it a try.
  16. I doubt it! I'm planning to ride my Sprint RS to the gathering unless the weather is bad. There's not much room for speakers on the bike. If anyone else is interested in bringing some gear, I'll bring CDs.
  17. Absolutely, Rob! That's a great idea.
  18. Which xover and midrange driver do you have? The Type AL xover is notorious for resonances and odd noises. The others are not too bad. The K-400 aluminum horn will ring, but not that badly. You will hear it and I use the Titanic soundtrack to find those odd resonances. However, the resonances I had on "Titanic" came from the Type AL crossover, not the horn. IMO, the best sounding crossover for the big Klipsch is a Type A made from Premium components (sparing no expense on Hovland caps, for example). The best all around crossever is the Type AA made from those same premium components. John Warren has made a *beautiful* pair for his K-horn. There are pictures on the Forum.
  19. Roll UP. Trey, I haven't head from the caterer.
  20. http://www.passlabs.com/products.htm How about Nelson Pass amps? At up to $4k, you might be able to get into Krell and certainly there is MacIntosh.
  21. I've got 2 pieces of Original Monster Cable laying about! I bought it in college 20+ years ago. I'm not using it because it's green inside the insulation. Wonder what it sounds like?
  22. Assuming you DID build the ALKs as Al designed them, they are unlikely to be the cause of your dead rweeters. An over-driven amp is. The ALKs do let more low frequency get to the tweeters than your Type ALs. You can do one of 2 things. Add the bulb and resistor to the tweeter circuit as shown in the attached schematic, or insert the dual zener diodes from your Type ALs. The diode trick is effective, but harsh sounding. The bulb and resistor smoothly limit the voltage applied to the tweeter, long term, and also comprise a 1 dB L-pad. Since the tweeter carries a rating of 105 dB/w/m, you will probably like this mod.
  23. Fruit Jar? Hmmm. I believe that's the stump where I leave an envelope in the morning and find a gift in the afternoon. I can handle it.
