  1. Found this on KSL (Our version of Craigslist). Its not my listing but I figured I would put it here if anyone was interested: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=32420293&cat=&lpid=&search=klipsch&ad_cid=8
  2. I agree, that way you can run that analogue signal directly to whatever speakers. The problem with running vinyl into 5.1 is you are taking a pure analogue signal then digitizing it through the surround processors then converting back into analogue wave for the speakers. Also, depending on the size of your house if you turn up a good 2 channel system it will fill your house with music depending also on how open your floor plan is. If you do want a surround system make sure you look around the forum for advice on what speakers that will compliment each other. This forum made me toss my center speaker due to a timber mismatch and I was blown away by how much better my system sounds now with a 4.1 system. If you set up your speaker placement right the phantom center will put the voice right on the screen too.
  3. From what I have heard, the Crites titanium tweeters are the best bang for the buck. I dont think new crossovers are going to do much for you unless your stock ones are worn out. As tremoms mentioned, you are better off spending the money on a better center. If you really want to go big down the road and you can find a single KG, KLF etc. floor speaker you can take it apart, put it on its side and put a new mdf panel on the front with the tweeter in the middle of the two woofers. Here is a link to a thread in which a member posted some pics of one he did, its pretty boss: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/152146-custom-kg-55-center/
  4. It looks like this is still on the market. Would this make a good center channel between 2 KG 5.5's? http://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/ele/4719669635.html
  5. Ok so buying a single KG 5.5 is pretty much out of the question although it would be a fun project someday. I did find a Klipsch KSC-C1 on Craigslist and based on your advice should have a pretty good match: http://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/ele/4719303810.html It has a Tractrix horn, rated at 100W and is one of the most sensitive at 95db. http://www.klipsch.com/ksc-c1/details Its been on the market for about a month so I can probably talk him down.
  6. I see what you mean now with that left surround being mashed up against the wall. If the wire is already set up for ceiling speakers I would definitely go that rout it will be cleaner looking than stands as well. Stands are nice because it gives you the flexibility to move things around but due to the room limitations you dont have much for options anyway.
  7. I think he's going for diffusion, not absorption. From what I understand, proper diffusion comes from a determined pattern for the sound wave to bounce off rathat than a bunch of random wood angles. http://arqen.com/sound-diffusers/
  8. That is a tricky one. Is that the definate way you want to set the room up? I would put them on stands next to your couch and point them at the back wall so the sound bounces into your seating position. I found that whenever your couch is back against a wall it helps diffuse the sound for ambient effects instead of just hearing it right from the speaker when they are too close. If you really want to do it you can get some diffusers to put directly behind the couch and have the surrounds fire back into the diffusers.

    What I Got Today!

I got to work for 15+ Insurance salesmen...
  10. This is so true. My Uncle spent a ton of money on his HT system but paid no attention to room acoustics. They professional installers ran all the EQ but someone got into the settings on accident and messed it up and he had no idea how to fix it. The other problem with EQ is that it may sounds great for you in the sweet spot but your buddies will wonder why there is no/way too much bass because the EQ amplified the wrong settings for other seats because the sweet spot was in a bass null etc.
  11. Interesting writeup, thank you for sending. As a general rule I like to absorb the primary reflection points from the L/R channels and someday will do the center as well to keep the voices clear during movies. I think from that point you would want to do bass management in the corners then use diffusion for the surround and rear reflection points to keep the room 'alive'.
  12. This is interesting and reminds me of a TED talk that Tony Andrews did a while back. I heard one of the reasons behind the compression originally is that certain studios wanted their music to sound louder on the radio than others so they boosted the tracks and it compressed the signal. Bad music produces an adrenal response which makes us fatigued and is why its hard to listen to crappy mp3 music for very long while good music reproduction elicits a dopamine response which is why you can listen to vinyl for hours without getting tired.
  13. My favorite is the Russian leaders one:
  14. Musicians still get money from live gigs like the old days. Look at Pretty Lights, he gives his music away for free online and makes all his money off his tours. He did also sell out his newest album in Vinyl. Digital has allowed smaller artists to get their name out without signing major record deals and selling their souls to bland music for the masses. That being said, digital has to be done right with a good source material and DAC which is something that has been largely lost by my generation. I am happy with my digital setup and it sounds compatible to vinyl to my ears. Vinyl is important though in that it forces you to step back and focus on all the aspects of music in an analogue way such as tracking force, leveling, angle etc. This makes you a more critical listener so you focus more on fidelity if you decide to get into digital again.
  15. Its worse than you think: He is actually a world famous 'Dubstep' DJ. Dubstep of course is the antithesis of what real music should be and is basically a cacophony of horrid noises meant to elicit an adrenalin response. Here is where things get really weird, Skrillex did a collaboration with the Doors for an electronic music documentary in 2011: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/remaining-doors-members-record-with-skrillex-for-new-documentary-20111006
  16. These guys pretty much taught me everything I know about room setup:
  17. You are placed into a perfectly tuned listening room with La Scalas then realize the only source material you have is an ipod mini full of Skrillex songs ripped from youtube videos... You know you've gone straight to hell when...
  18. Wow, he even has a coffee table blocking the sound stage and absolutely no dampening at primary reflection points. Well, its good to know that a 26 year old who bought some kg 5.5's for his birthday and watched a few youtube videos has a better room and knows more about acoustic treatment than the high end reviewers...
  19. It will be down the road but I was thinking of going with the Dayton Audio 15" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Package and a Dayton Audio SPA500 500W Subwoofer Plate Amplifier. http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-15-reference-series-ho-subwoofer-and-cabinet-package--300-7093?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pla http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-spa500-500w-subwoofer-plate-amplifier--300-807 This will be the sub for my 5.1 system with KG 5.5 mains. Has anyone else done this build with success? It looks like a pretty good deal.
  20. So you are saying you dont enjoy listening to Skrillex and Lil John played through a Honda Civic trunk?
  21. My buddy had a Vinyl collection in College about 4 years ago. Lol he also had a bumper sticker that said, "Listen to Vinyl, because you cant roll a joint on an iPod." I think the other issue is that once you hear vinyl and how much better it sounds than most digital it kind of sucks you in. Its more social as well as you all gather around to put a record on and have to listen to it all the way though instead of people hijacking your computer every 3 songs.
  22. I have this in my room and I swear by it: Aune T1 Tube USB DAC: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A2QJMRY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It looks awesome and you can swap and upgrade the tube as well. I did an AB test with this DAC using Spotify Premium and Vinyl and could not tell a difference.
  23. I paid $400 for mine and am happy. If you are near Utah there are some good deals right now: Heresy for $450: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=32186790&cat=&lpid=&search=klipsch&ad_cid=7 KG 5.5 for $400 OBO, they have been on the market for almost a month so he will most likely bring it down: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=31883742&cat=&lpid=&search=klipsch%20kg&ad_cid=1 klipsch ksp300- $300 http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=31917632&cat=&lpid=0&search=klipsch&ad_cid=12
  24. The Yamaha's are definitely brighter, but can be "warmed" up a little. I like them better for instruments playing and for HT. They seem to have a "fuller" more all around sound to me.The warmer sound from Denon and even warmer sound for Marantz is nice for people who focus more on voice/jazz type music in my opinion. I just felt that they weren't bright enough for the instruments and didn't give a full enough sound for me. Maybe it was the store where I listenend to them. Maybe it's just that my ears have been accustomed to Yamaha all these years, but I like hearing a nice crisp high and thumping bass with the mids not as focused. MARANTZ didn't seem to have the thumping bass, but were ridiculous with voice/jazz and mids. I feel Denon is in between both.I can say the older Yamaha receivers were warmer in sound than they are today. That makes sense. I am a novice on a budget so my Denon is my first high end receiver. I had a POS Kenwood before that that had a miserable amount of sibilance harshness so I really wanted to go warmer. I see what you mean though, Saxophones on my KG 5.5's sound holographic but things like high strings and especially piano is lacking a little. I am happy to have found this forum, I am humbled by the knowledge and experience of the people here.
