  1. I love a good covert operation. This one has a money laundering component to it as well. Your secret is safe here ;-)
  2. I replaced one of the K-77-D's in my La Scala 2's with a CT120 today. Install took about an hour - had to square-off the rounded corners of the tweeter cut-out on the motor-board so the CT120 would fit. Got everything buttoned up after a little bit of fiddling around. The difference is noticeable right away. The CT120 is clearer, more detailed, and free from any coloration. Off-axis sounds better too. I didn't make any changes to the crossover (it's a big honkin' crossover inside the La Scala 2 BTW). The volume of the K-77-D and CT120 seemed to be matched - at first I thought the CT120 was a bit louder but I don't think so - it's just clearer and revealing more details. I only had a chance to listen to a few songs today. Tomorrow I'll do some more detailed listening before swapping out the other K-77-D.
  3. I didn't think Revenant lived up to the hype. Thought Martian was better. Maybe I like happier movies where the actors shower once in a while
  4. IMHO, the increased seating distance and the higher ceilings are really helping you out in your new room. Enjoy.
  5. In my case, I wouldn't call it a problem. When I go out of my way and stick my ear inside the tweeter horn, I can hear a faint tap if I really concentrate hard in a quiet room while holding my breath. I'm keeping mine - they sound great for their size and price, and it's such a portable and flexible system. I'll be using mine later today for sound reinforcement of a string quartet at a loud cocktail hour following a wedding. That said, it is a 1.0 product and maybe there are things that could be done better with the digital amp implementation. I wonder if they had a bad production run? Give them a call - maybe 3rd time is the charm.
  6. Watched "The Finest Hours" on Friday night about a Coast Guard rescue off the coast of Massachusetts in 1952. Great story. Movie was a bit too dramatic at times. 2.5/4 stars. Watched "13 Hours" last night. I wasn't aware of all the bureaucratic BS and poor decisions leading up to that night that four guys paid for with their lives. My son thought it was on-par or better than American Sniper. I would put it just a notch below. 3.5/4 stars.
  7. Lawson Rollins - Traveler - sounds good downloaded from hdtracks. Good background music. Last year, I was doing a presentation at a movie theatre and had my laptop connected to the theatre's audio and video. I played Traveler while customers were arriving and mingling. I don't know what kind of speakers they had behind the movie screen, but it sounded awesome.
  8. i went up to my office where my pair has been sitting in standby mode for a day or so. Didn't hear anything. Then I stuck my ear almost inside the horn, and I could hear a faint click every 7-8 seconds or so. If I'm 8 inches away, I can't hear anything. And this is a quiet house on a Saturday morning @ 36db ambient noise. I tried different inputs, different volume levels, and mute prior to putting it into standby mode, and the clicks were still present. Your son must have dog hearing. I would have never noticed if I hadn't been told what to listen for.
  9. Mine don't do this. At least not that I've noticed. I'll take a closer listen later today. I don't have a powered sub connected like you do. Ask your son to do two tests: 1) temporarily disconnect the powered sub. 2) on the remote, switch to an unused input (phono/line) prior to putting it into standby mode.
  10. FWIW, I agree with Bill's approach. Upgrade the amp, use the RX-A3050 as a preamp/processor (and amp for some of the light-weight channels), and this combo will be tough to beat. If there's a weak link in your sound-quality chain, it will not be the RX-A3050 used as a preamp/processor.
  11. With my Heresy 3's, I've had two different powered subs connected via line-level pre-outs and I crossed them around 50hz or so. I have to turn up the subs reasonably high (11-2 o'clock) to get good bass at the same level with the H3's. A couple weeks ago, I did try connecting my powered sub via speaker-level connections to my La Scala 2's. The problem I had was the LS2's are so sensitive that they would be playing loud buy I couldn't crank up the sub loud enough to match - very finicky. This might be part of the problem you are having with the Heresy's and those speaker-level connections.
  12. I'm building a semi-covered patio this summer, so I've been thinking about this as well. I picked up a pair of the R-15PM's on Thursday. They're so portable and flexible, I can bring them outside when I want but also use them for other purposes as well. The two other uses I had in mind were 1) my home office and 2) live sound reinforcement for a string quartet. These things can connect to anything and the two online reviews I saw (CNET and AVSforum) are spot on. I'm hoping I found my new outdoor speakers without having to hardwire anything in place.
  13. Spot on. When I set my amp's gain to match my pre-amp's output level, the La Scala's were just too sensitive. Lots of hiss and they blew me out of the room with the pre-amp volume up below 9 o'clock. I dialed back the amp's gain to eliminate the hiss and there is a much less sensitive volume knob with a usable range up to 11 o'clock.
  14. Amazon - AMZN. Everybody thinks of them as an online retailer. I order tons of stuff and just became a Prime member myself. But this will be peanuts compared to their AWS hosting division which is, by far, the fastest growing and most profitable segment of their business. AWS is $10B by itself and not many people have heard of it unless your CIO has outsourced your IT Infrastructure to it and you're out of a job.
  15. The SYS also has the ability to switch inputs. Take your Source and split the signal to the AVR and the SYS with a splitter, then run the out of the AVR to the other input of the SYS (it's passive so it is not adding anything so no harm here) and you can push the button on the SYS and a/b them pretty closely as you can add the AVR and remove it without unwiring it. Be curious as to what you think... Ok, the SYS came today. Did some A/B testing using Y-splitters coming out of the DAC, with the following two signal paths: 1) DAC --> SYS --> AMP --> LaScala 2 2) DAC --> AVR --> SYS --> AMP --> LaScala 2 I'll be damned if I couldn't tell a lick of difference. My son was pushing the button on the SYS to switch between the paths. I got nothin'. Several different types of music, male vocals, female vocals, loud, soft (both paths volume matched) - no difference. I switched positions with my son figuring his 16-year old ears could detect something. He couldn't tell any difference either. Unless my testing was flawed, or there is a weak link in my chain dumbing things down to the lowest common denominator, or our ears aren't "golden", then my conclusion is my AVR in my setup is not affecting two-channel sound quality. Now, I still may buy a new AVR for other things like room calibration and/or modern features. But I'm in no rush. And I'm also not as concerned about "pure direct" modes, analog stage quality, and A/D/A conversions mucking up my two-channel sound quality. If my 15-year old Yamaha HTR-5250 (about $400 new IIRC) isn't messing up my sound, then a modern AVR certainly shouldn't, and I am more open improvements done in the digital realm by room calibration etc.
  16. Filet mignon and bone-in ribeye's on the weber kettle today. lots of leftovers for steak salads this week.
  17. Great price on beautiful speakers. Good luck with your sale.
  18. I was wondering what impact my 15-year old low-end Yamaha AVR, now being used as a preamp, had on the sound. Spent an hour or more Friday comparing the sound from my DAC fed through the Yamaha to my Mcintosh amp as normal vs directly connecting my DAC to the amp. Tried to level match things as best I could for a fair comparison. I swapped around the RCA cables 20+ times. I thought I could hear more dynamics and clarity with the Yamaha out of the signal path, but I'm not sure. I was surprised how close it was. And this is a Yamaha AVR prior to when they started coming out with things like "pure direct" - the best I can do is set "effect off" which I think still does an A/D/A conversion. Maybe I'll run another test. I like the idea of just using a SYS. This has got my wheels turning.
  19. congrats! post some pics when you get a chance!
  20. Lots of variables. It might be a good deal if the damage to the veneer is normal wear and tear, and the stock drivers and crossover have been well cared for. Ask if everything is stock. Remember, these things are almost 40 years old. I'm 46 and a lot of stuff started going out-of-spec on my body around 40. Same thing here. If you let emotions win out, you could end up with a couple pieces of damaged furniture with electronics and drivers in need of hundreds of dollars of repair.
  21. You can order the 2m black directly from Ortofon in Germany for €499.95 shipped directly to your door in the US. This is about $570. Not a bad deal.
  22. Currently have the blue on my VPI Scout. Great bang for the buck. Thinking about upgrading to the black for its alleged superior tracking ability in tough passages and on the inner grooves.
  23. McIntosh is working well for me, although I have never tried tubes or many other solid state amps. MA6500 2-channel integrated driving a pair of Heresy 3's. MC-58 8-channel driving a pair of La Scala 2's. Both purchased used. All stock. No autoformers. Not dark sounding at all - very musical IMHO compared to the previous SS amps I had.
