  1. I have a pair of JBL L250s and the wood is dry (live in the desert). They might have never been oiled. They are teak. I plan to refinish them with a polyurethane but in the meantime I am concerned that they are so dry. Should I apply a coat of 50 / 50 BLO & mineral spirits or just go ahead and refinish them now with the poly finish. I really do not want to do the poly finish just yet as I want to take my time and really restore these when I am ready (which will be a while from now) I think I need to put on a 50 / 50 BLO mix this weekend. The area below the grills is also darker than the rest of the speaker which is very common. Will this come out with a light sanding? I don't want to try to sand this out until I put a final finish on these.
  2. Wow, those speakers are huge and look correctly sized in your room. Pics of the Accuphase please!
  3. I used Mint because it was lightweight. Why do you prefer Mint over Ubuntu? My issue was that if you needed anything, the learning curve was steep to figure it out. I'd liek to keep my computers going after MS Win 10 is done.
  4. Someone who know what they are doing can get those looking like new, not too difficult, but time consuming to do it right. Everything is there except for the grill cloth. But they need to be completely taken apart, sanded and every surface refinished. Plus new grills made. This takes a while. Not worth your time unless you enjoy the process or want to try to make $5 and hour for your labor. Sell them discounted (meaning not top dollar) and let someone else do the work.
  5. I tried Mint years a go without success. Hopefully it is much easier to use now.
  6. Unless the cabs have severe water damage, it will be easier to re-veneer them. Use something exotic and they will look beautiful. They are a square box so not a difficult job.
  7. I just refinished some Chorus IIs with oil based urethane, Sand, apply with a foam brush, repeat two times. The finish is glass smooth to the touch.
  8. The 3M 300LSE is the way to go. Sticks well and can still peel off if need be. I tested a piece of uncleaned cloth last night and it stuck together very well.
  9. I'm not sure that the Hegal is 300 wpc. Look at the specs. if it goes down to 2 ohms, the output should significantly increase. Two times the power when you cut the impedance in half is a myth, but this thing should have 900 or more wpc at 2 ohms, they list nothing. The distortion should also be 300 wpc rated from 20 to 20K. This reads like a 50 wpc amp. https://www.hegel.com/en/products/integrated/h590 Power output: 2 x 301 W into 8 Ω, Dual Mono Minimum load: 2 Ω Distortion: Less than 0.005% @ 50 W/8 Ω/1 kHz I just refinished some speakers with grill cloth that looks like yours. Do you have any closeup photos of the grills?
  10. Wow, very nicely laid out circuit. A same to hide it!
  11. Thanks. I ordered the 300LSE. One seller on Amazon had a 40% coupon. My grill cloth is plastic. How to I prep this? I will lightly sand the backs of the aluminum badges, but I do not want to put thinner or acetone on the grill cloth. If need be I can test a solvent on a scrap as I have a big roll of the cloth.
  12. Is this the stuff? This is foam and looks thick. https://www.amazon.com/Super-Strength-Molding-Tape-03614/dp/B002JOVUO0
  13. Oh come on, you don't have a paperclip or some tin foil to 'fix' it? Seriously, why did they blow? Some bad caps, resistors or anything else?
  14. The motorboards look like they can fit the ZXPC 18" x 11" horn. They do look promising, but only for the right buyer, meaning someone looking to pick up another's project.
  15. I had this happen with a receiver once. One little strand was all it took, I thought the receiver was bad.
  16. I know nothing, please keep this in mind. When I was an engineer, I knew engineers in the aircraft industry. They did well, but layoffs were very common. Keep this in mind. That can be rough if you do not have reserve cash. Look into cleaning private aircraft or something like that. Or even working at a small airport (like an executive airport, we have several in the city where I live). I used to work for a company that had a private helicopter. When we were at the small airport, it seems like you can get in easily. If you have contact with pilots and mechanics, make connections and work from there to turn it into something.
  17. Hmmm, out of what I have on hand, I guess the Gorila Glue. It seems like a permanent glue is a bad idea in case the grill cloth is ever damaged. I want to be able to remove the emblems and use them again. I should have some RTV or silicone. Maybe some painter's latex caulk. I love that stuff. Really tough but you can break the seal if need be. My friend who owns a granite business told me to use this to install sinks. I was going to use silicone but he said that if I ever needed to replace the sink, I would destroy the granite. He was right, the plain old caulk was really difficult to remove, but doable without destroying the counters.
  18. It reminds me of Airplane, the movie, everyone, get in your crash positions!
  19. I need to glue some badges to grills. New heritage style cloth, the plasticly kind. I have some rubber cement, hot glue gun and Gorilla glue. The Gorilla glue seems too strong but maybe not. What do I use?
  20. I think he is referring to the depth of the sound stage, not treble response. To the OP, try bringing the speakers a three feet into the room. Maybe the wall reflections are affecting the depth.
  21. IF you have drivers and are already planning a Cornscala build and IF the cabinets just need to be sanded with some 220 and then three coats of urethane to look like new, then they do have some value. But the drivers are junk and the motorboards can't be used for regular Cornwalls, so they need to go to someone with some woodworking skills who is also looking for a project. If they are close go by with some cash in hand and see shat you can do. $400 still seems high though if that is really what was offered.
