Me Loves Khorns Posted January 28, 2010 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Hello all. I am on an island off the coast of Haiti now. We were brought by boat here today. No doctors have been able to get out here till now. Have been working in the 'tent cities' till now. Actually delivered a baby on the ground yesterday! He was not breathing at first, but after we worked on him a bit, he came around nicely! Tomorrow, I will be doing 7-8 surgeries at least. I will be working in a tiny hospital, part of which fell down during the quake. Thank God, the OR did not fall down. It is like stepping back in time. Way way back.... But, will make the best of it. People have started to flood over seeking surgery. So, should be a great day tomorrow! The destruction here is like it is on the news. Unbelievable horrible. Everyone you talk to has lost at least someone. Many have lost numerous people. But they are picking themselves up and going on. The Haitians are an unbelievably tough people. Amazing. We are staying with some missionaries here on the island who have a satelite internet setup and generator. So I was finally able to reach the 'outside' world for a short time! .So, it looks like we are going to be piggybacking a ride on a military plane on Sunday back to somewhere in the States. Then make our way back to Texas from there. It has so far been a wonderful trip. The destruction is terrible, but feel safe. The people are so amazingly grateful. Almost embarrassingly so! So, keep us all in your prayers. And, I have already used the Antibiotics that were gifted! The number of infections from the damage here is just non stop. Have given out thousands of doses so far. Me Loves Khorns Posted January 31, 2010 Author Share Posted January 31, 2010 Just made it home! Was at the Haiti airport, going to take a military plane to somewhere, then make my way back here.... And a private jet pulls up. It's owner is from Waco Texas. Man who started Curves work out places. I kind of know him here in town. He is the owner of this jet, flies it too. So, me and 4 others on my team get a ride on his Citation all the way back to Waco! Even let me sit in the copilot seat for the final stretch! So what a wonder surprise that was! He has been flying doctors and supplies down there. The rest of the trip was very productive and wonderful. All of the surgeries went great in spite of the conditions. I am going to try to go back to this same island off Haiti in the next year to do some more cases actually. The people there are so great. Treated us like we were royalty. The media is of course, being the media... No huge riots all over. One area we were working in did have a rush on a food truck. So the soldiers fired in the air, and the rush was stopped. But, other than a ton of desperate and starving people, it is not just one big riot there. Some of our team got some food poisoning. I have avoided it so far. Hope it stays that way! I will have to load up some pics and things once I recover and rest. Back to the 'real' world tmrw! Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. The trip was absolutely divinely blessed. I left feeling more blessed by the wonderful Haitian people than I feel like I helped them. And BTW, the antibiotics that were donated... Totally used and needed. Thank you again... We were supposed to fly Delta, but the flight was cancelled at the last minute. So Continental squeezed us in. We rolled up with 19 big plastic containers of supplies, IV bags, food, water, diapers, etc. Gate agent looks at us. That is too much luggage. Well, yes, very true. It was supposed to be about 200 per extra box. Supervisor comes out. We tell her where we are going. She waives all the charges. So thank you Continental! Both of them, with tears rolling down their faces, took my hand. They said: Thank you for coming to help our people. They knew that they would be dying soon. They did not complain. Or ask why I could not fix them. They were simply grateful. That is a strength that I have a hard time understanding really. Amazing really...
