mungkiman
Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 as a tip for himself. Each guest got $1 back: so now each guest only paid $9; bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. And $27 + $2 = $29. Where's the other $1? Schu
The hotel has it... each guest actually paid in excess of $9.33ea.
mungkiman
How do you figure that? Each guest paid out $10, and each got $1 back = $9 each x 3 = $27 Edited June 19, 2014 by mungkiman
tigerwoodKhorns
The puzzle tries to take the $2 out of the $3 that was retunred to the guests, but it was actually paid by the guests to the Belhop. So each guest paid $10 and got $1 back so they did pay $27. The Bellhop has $2, which was paid by the guests. So $27 - $2 to belhop and - $25 to hotel balances out. mungkiman
Ding, ding, ding. $25 hotel plus $3 guests plus $2 bellhop equals $30. There is no missing $1. The questioning held the fallacy.
tigerwoodKhorns
And I think the house with southrn exposure from all walls is triangular with the front 2 walls made of glass. Got any more of these? I don't feel like working.
Schu
I missed it, its actually $8.33+ ea (not $9.33) for the room and $.67 for the bell hop, that means the left over fraction was amortized over the three of them and went to the hotel because the bell hop only took $2.00. The fallacy was that there was a dollar. I think I was actually correct. So much for trying to do this math in my head.
