That's what it looks like, I had no idea but not surprised.

http://news.yahoo.com/man-owns-smart-tv-says-afraid-using-reading-014529097.html

Just like with other electronic devices that used to be “dumb,” TVs have become increasingly smart lately, but that doesn’t mean that’s necessarily a good thing, especially when it comes to user privacy. At least that’s what Brennan Center’s Michael Price seems to think after he replaced his older TV that could offer access just to TV programs with a smart TV model that also delivers “streaming multimedia content, games, apps, social media and Internet browsing.”

“The only problem is that I’m now afraid to use it. You would be too — if you read through the 46-page privacy policy,” Price wrote. “The amount of data this thing collects is staggering. It logs where, when, how, and for how long you use the TV. It sets tracking cookies and beacons designed to detect ‘when you have viewed particular content or a particular email message.’ It records ‘the apps you use, the websites you visit, and how you interact with content.’ It ignores ‘do-not-track’ requests as a considered matter of policy.”

On the other hand, this isn’t the first time a smart TV has been found capable of tracking your activities for advertising purposes, so buyers should always try to go through the privacy policies they agree to when using such a device, and try to limit tracking if and when possible.

Furthermore, the device has a built-in camera with facial recognition and a microphone with voice recognition features, both tools that hackers or spy agencies could use to spy on unsuspecting buyers, Price says.

In addition to being used for ad purposes, these smart devices might also be hacked only as long as they’re connected to the Internet. Owners could decide to remove Internet access from their smart TVs to protect themselves against tracking and spying, but they’d lose most of their smart features in the process.

“I do not doubt that this data is important to providing customized content and convenience, but it is also incredibly personal, constitutionally protected information that should not be for sale to advertisers and should require a warrant for law enforcement to access,” Price said, further quoting former CIA chief General David Petraeus who once said the agency will be able to “spy on you through your dishwasher.”

“Indeed, as the ‘Internet of Things’ matures, household appliances and physical objects will become more networked,” Price said. “Your ceiling lights, thermostat, and washing machine — even your socks — may be wired to interact online. The FBI will not have to bug your living room; you will do it yourself.”

In my youth, I worked for the NSA indirectly.  That was back in the 1980's.  Their capabilities then were mind-boggling and of course, I cannot go into detail.  But, I will say this: if you are among those that do not believe the government is recording/storing your voice/text/email communications then you are naive.  Some of you may be smirking at that.  But I know what I know.

Around here we could care less if they know what we are watching on tv. I doubt anybody other than advertisers care either. Lets face it, unless you are a bomb maker or agent for North Korea or some other radical person working for a radical country, the US government doesn't care. Last night they could have watched me eat some red beans/rice while screaming at a football game. Now that is good stuff for sure.

The attitude of the first post invites the over-reach in the second post.  Even worse is that most people have bought the whole "we are looking for terrorists" mime as the excuse to invade your privacy and homes.  If you do some minor research yourself it shows that looking for terrorists is not on their list of priorities.  What is?  I doubt anyone on here cares enough to do the research to actually find out. Don't believe it? Then please answer why/how the Boston Marathon was bombed by a couple guys that the Russians had previously warned us about?

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."  ~~ Benjamin Franklin

If you prefer to have THIS government spy on you under the pretext that they are protecting you, good luck with that road. And...

"May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ~~ Samuel Adams

Government is nothing more than a collection of Men. Men with power are inherently evil.  Over time they will use that power against the people.  You need only look throughout History to prove this statement and the United States is not immune from that demise.

You might say that you don't care and that you will not suffer from it.  But if you have children, they will.  If that doesn't bother you then I'm glad I'm not one of your children.

I have to leave this thread now, I am allowing it to become personal.

No one seems to give a schit about the future, but everyone gripes about what the guberment does to them. Meanwhile they send their money to China to pay for bullets for their children/grandchildren.

I don't blame you, I don't like the whole idea, I wonder how the smart Tv's do this, I guess there is a little camera somewhere on it ?

I guess the next popular thing will be a website where you can go look at what these cameras are seeing, people are already posting every move they make and every thing they do on facebook, guess it's just the next step ? I did see an advertisement once for an app that let's you know when your friends are in the general area of your phone wherever you happen to be. So it tracks you and your friends, if they have something like this for civilians what is really going on is much worse.

I live in Utah and drive by the huge NSA Facility every day. Its a massive draconian bunkerlike building you can see from the freeway. Its definitely a sobering reminder of what our government is up to.
