faked out...

ok, does anyone else have those experiences when watching a movie that

they think some sound in the movie is actually a real life occuring

event?

For example, I was watching "Meet Joe Black" and there was this one

sound of a police car panning from the rear right to the front right

across to the front left. There was a storm happening at the time so I

jumped to the window to see if there was anything interesting to see -

and kait starts laughing at me because she knew the sound was from the

movie, not from outside! lol.

This isn't the first time it has happened, but I was wondering if

anyone else has the same 'problem'? I can imagine that it wouldn't be

as large of a concern in a dedicated home theatre because there's

nothing to get faked about. With the way my room is setup relative to

the outside, it makes total sense how I could have made the mistake.

There was another time when I had started a video conversation with my

dad and I had yet to plugin my mic. I was under the desk trying to find

the right spot in the back of the computer when my mom addressed me...I

swung around and nailed my head on the desk thinking she was in my

apartment!

Sometimes this happens, especially with rain/storm softly in the background. You should see our dog, the first time we hooked everything up and a dog barked off screen ( left front ), the dog bolted up to the chair, looking out onto the street.

Our dog just about went nutz when we threw in Snow Dogs, the first time anyways, after a few showings, she settled down.

I've sometimes get the "was that my phone ringing?" feeling, when it

was actually a phone in the movie. One time, there was a car

thumping bass in a movie, and I thought it was some yokel outside going

down my street.

And of course, the thunderstorm and rain, especially when it was actually raining outside during the day.

All the time.. usually with background low-level stuff.

Some examples:

Mahoromatic: All bath scenes. The Misato's bath needs

work.. drip..splish..drip..splish.. first time, I thought it was my

faucet leaking. Or the AC leaking.. or the roof..

Mahoromatic: All boat scenes: Buried deep within the

soundtrack, the sound of a large diesel.. first time I heared it, I

thought there was a large utility truck outside my apt.. it's just the

ship's powerplant..

Anytime an old-school Western-Electric phone rings. I've not had

one for 20 years, yet everytime I hear that characteristic

"Trrrrrrinnngg" of an old WeCo phone, I look around for mine.. [:D]

Harry Potter III: The sequence were Harry leaves home and sits at

a curb, right before the Knight Bus arrives... dogs barking in the

distance sound a little too real.. thought it was dogs in my

vicinity. Ditto for the dogs in Pink Floyd's "Animals"

The first movie I watched with the Quartets in place has a trash truck

pulling up in front of a house while you're facing the house from the

front yard . . . so the the trash truck is behind you. I turned

around and peeked through the blinds to see who was parking in front of

my house.

Happens quite often with both HT AND music. Ask Boomac what he did when he first played The Sermon LP by Jimmy Smith. There's a song with what sounds to be a phone or fax machine played by Jimmy on the B3. I know Scott jumped up to answer. The first time I heard it I was in the car and looked down at my cell thinking I must have accidentally changed the ring tone.

I've had this happen when watching quite a few movies. My HT is setup in what she considers her living room. When weather is nice we leave the front door open (sitting above the door is my surround sound speaker). We were watching LOTR two towers, and there was a squealing sound out of the RH surround, I kept looking out the door thinking something was going on with the dog across the street. I looked 3 times before I realized what it was. When I asked her if she heard it she said sure, wanted to know what was going on out there... then I replayed the passage on the DVD and we both started laughing. Fooled us both, and of course there have been many others espically when we watch with the door open. I think part of it is we pay more attention to sound on that side with the door open, incase someone comes up on the porch.

Have to agree with a previous poster though, that Klipsch does give some great realism.

Yes all the time but like divin said when we have all the doors and windows open it happins alot more. Sometimes even just with music i get up and look out the door or windows.

We don't watch many scary movies much but when the kids were in their early teens they would invite their friends over and they want to start out with all the lights out and an hour later all the lights are on. I also helped by sneaking around the outside of the house and scaring them.

I love the localization thing. There is no speaker in the direction of my front door. It is midway between the front CW and rear CW on the Left side. But sometimes they get a knocking sound or dog barking exactly to that side and I could swear that it's coming from my front door. 'quick, hide the stash!'

The realism of Klipsch is truly astounding. I remember walking into the Graham Stereo shop at Glendale mall as a young teen and marveling that the sound was just like musicians in the room. I wondered if I could ever attain such Nirvana.

I have. and some...

The only animal related freak outs i've noticed... whenever I turn my

receiver up too -30ish with my RB25 Stereo Setup my one cat if its

sittin on the couch, no matter what I play bolts off and prances up the

stairs (like a gazelle, jumping with the back legs then the front over

and over and moving like that)... and my other cat just sits beside em

and rears her ears back and enjoys the tunes.... normally the one that

doesn't care about the music is the one thats afraid of everything

else... Go figure,animals...

Yeah I have on occasion at my friends house mistaken nosies like glass

shattering, (he almost lives in a sketchy area of town, so I thought

some vandals were outside smashin up some windows) good times when you

reailze thats not the case...

I have had a few of those. The first was watching Conspiracy

Theory in the theater. It is the seen where Mel Gibson and Julia

Robers are in a barn and there was a noise that was slowly getting

louder right by where the door to the theater was. i thought that

the person at the door better shut the door so I can enjoy the

movie. So I turn around and the door was closed and when I

realized it was the surrund sound I was kind of mad cause it took me

out of the movie.

The second was watching Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones on

my system. It is the scene where there is a battle in the arena

near the end of the film. There was a sound behind me and I did

not know if it was outside or in the movie. So I played that part

again and when I found out that it was a sound behind me I laughed and

was praising my RS-7s.

My last one was Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn in 5.1. It was a part

in the movie where you are the going through the woods as the evil

presence, and I heard a dog barking. I still don't know if it is

in the movie or it was my neighbour's dog. The next time I watch

it I will try to listen for it again to figure out if it was real or

not.

Ooh, happens all the time. fools the wife more often that me though (she cant hear very good).

phones ringing. doors shutting, dogs barking.

the strangest one for me is while i am listening to iron maiden piece of mind CD (Kind of loud as always) i swore i heard a voice come out of our two way monitored alarm system speaker. i play that same passage over and over and every time i hear the same thing seemingly emanating from the same place. i swear it says "is everything alright".
