CaptnBob
I finally got around to cracking open my LEE Catenoid corner horn and found a 12" University woofer that can only be described as "puny." My questions are: 1.) Why is there some electric green goo on the frame of the driver? It does not appear to be a deliberate application. 2.) Should I remove it? 3.) Will I need a hazmat suit to do so? 4.) Should I exercise caution when I open the garage door tonight lest I get jumped by whatever it's mutated to? 5.) Has any one seen anything like this? (At least anyone who doesn't say "Soon you'll be 'one of us.'") Thanks

CaptnBob
It doesn't look like anything you'd want near your mouth - unless you liked that lime Jell-o that was a staple of the school lunch program back in the day.

thebes
Green usually signals copper to me. Could wires have melted/gunked/flowed over the years onto some kind of grease that was left over from assembly? Hell you were a child at one time. Give it the old kids smell and tip of the tongue test.
sheltie dave
Bob, if the Lee spent a lot of time in a very humid climate(like St. Louis,) you can get some good fungal and mold growths. They like it when the humidity is over 40% or so. If the conditions are right, when the speaker cycles in temperature, the woofer basket would be able to lose heat faster and reach the dewpoint first. There may not be much moisture, but over the years it could result in that green slime mold that Frank Zappa would sing about... ScorpsFan
Gotta think thebes is onto something, had a roll of clear coated copper wire stored for some years in the garage, when I went to use some, it looked like the "blob" sticky, green and yucky. Of course, now that some neighbors and small animals have begun to go missing lately, I've been sitting here in the dark....... Beware of the Blob,it creeps and leaps, and glides and slides, across the floor and more, and out the door, and all around the wall,a splotch, a blotchBE CAREFUL OF THE BLOB! ! ! colterphoto1
Funny you should say that Sheltie Dave, I was just playing the song 'Let's make the water turn black'. bet if you dunked that blob into a pond of stagnant water, it'd turn black..... Whatever it is, don't get it on your peepee! jeepers, that was very cerebral for my 9002nd post, wasn't it?[:S] M

CaptnBob
I got a little more into it this morning - the green goo seems to be dripping out of two grey metal boxes that appear to be part of the crossover. I closed the hatch back up as the stuff appeared to by drying out a bit and I figured wiping off would be easier than chipping off. Just what I wanted - my own toxic waste farm. What color are PCBs, anyway? While I was poking around, I got a little on my ear and now I have a strong desire to take the speaker to the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant...
