"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness -- these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked, Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."

Dean was quoting the father of our country!

Goerge Washington's farewell address. Washington was a Diest and a Mason. That he advocated so strongly the benefits of religion and the importance it has in buliding and maintaining a strong nation and yet in his personal life was chastised for not attending church has always been fascinating to me. In fact, after giving this address he stopped attending church altogether for the rest of his life.

Christians (and even some in my own church) often point to this passage when proclaiming that the USA is a "Chirsitan" nation and thyat it was founded as so. I think that's a very simplistic and very wrong interpretaion. Washington wrote and spoke almost nothing about his personal religious views.

Washington was a great leader and my admiration for him is immense.

"Political language -- and with

variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to

Anarchists -- is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder

respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."

A little allegorical tune from one of our great poet patriots: John Prine:

I knew a girl who was almost a lady

She had a way with all the men in her life

Every inch of her blossomed in beauty

And she was born on the fourth of july

Well she lived in an aluminum house trailer

And she worked in a juke box saloon

And she spent all the money I give her

Just to see the old man in the moon

Chorus:

I used to sleep at the foot of old glory

And awake in the dawns early light

But much to my surprise

When I opened my eyes

I was a victim of the great compromise

Well wed go out on saturday evenings

To the drive-in on route 41

And it was there that I first suspected

That she was doin what shed already done

She said johnny wont you get me some popcorn

And she knew I had to walk pretty far

And as soon as I passed through the moonlight

She hopped into a foreign sports car

(repeat chorus)

Well you know I could have beat up that fellow

But it was her that had hopped into his car

Many times Id fought to protect her

But this time she was goin too far

Now some folks they call me a coward

cause I left her at the drive-in that night

But Id druther have names thrown at me

Than to fight for a thing that aint right

(repeat chorus)

Now she writes all the fellows love letters

Saying greetings, come and see me real soon

And they go and line up in the barroom

And spend the night in that sick womans room

But sometimes I get awful lonesome

And I wish she was my girl instead

But she wont let me live with her

And she makes me live in my head

(repeat chorus)
