Ray Garrison
deang, "...With that kind of money comes a lot of responsibility..." I have NO IDEA what you're trying to say here. If you're trying to imply that just because someone is successful enough in business (or lucky enough ) to make a lot of money, that they somehow have some sort of moral imperative to spend it on things that meet your idea of socially concious or philathropical actions, boy do we disagree. Have you ever read Atlas Shrugged by Anne Rand? If I were ever successful enough to have enough money to go buy a million dollars worth of stereo equipment, if that's how I wanted to spend it, why do some folks feel that I would somehow be doing something wrong by doing this? It's MY MONEY. If I wanted to, say, take the million and donate it to the Imus Ranch or something, well, fine, it's MY MONEY. There is absolutely no logic or reasoning behind this stupid perception that someone who works hard enough, is smart enough, and is successful enough to make a good income for themselves has some sort of obligation to give it to people who don't want to spend the time and effort to make themselves successful. I HATE socialism. Ray, ever the capitalistic evalgelist. ------------------ Music is art Audio is engineering Ray's Music System

dougdrake2
Interesting thread. Just to throw more fuel on the fire, the same guy who makes $5m/year I mentioned above just remodeled his wife's closet for about $350,000. It even has a bathroom in it!! But, he gives more to charity in a year than most of us make in 5 or 10 years. Money itself isn't good or bad. It's what is done with it. And I think we all know that when a church has a major funding need, whose numbers don't they call? It's the engine and the caboose syndrome. If you kill the engine, what pulls the caboose? "He came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly." (Not an exact quote, but you know what I'm referring to.) Hard to have much life when you spend the best days of the best months of the best years of life making ends meet. I've gotta side with Ray on this as well, and I feel it would be unwise to use God as a reason not to be financially successful. He'll bless what we put our hands to. (All in the spirit of good natured debate.) Doug
Ray Garrison
I don't really have a problem with someone using their success to "...satisfy/satiate every materialistic fleshy desire to the nth degree..." - the desire to do exactly that has lead some of the most successful people in history, people who wrought some of the most significant advances in the general quality of life for all mankind... Thomas Edison, for example, after his 1886 marriage to a 20 year old young lady, spent quite a bit of time and a lot of money pursuing exactly those sorts of goals. To fuel those pursuits, he built and successfully ran one of the most prolific "invention factories" ever created. Had he not been so focused on "material gains to satisfy fleshy desires" our world would be a very, very different place. And probably a lot less fun. ------------------ Music is art Audio is engineering Ray's Music System
NastyHabits
Fellas, Fellas, It's not about money. It's about enjoying the music. Right now there's some folks in Afganistan listening to some raggedy old tapes on a boom-box that's been buried in the back yard for 5 years. I guarantee they're having as good or better time as the guy with basement sub-woofer. I've always felt that as we go through life, we should at least try to do no harm. I'd rather a bunch of rich folks spent stupid money on stereo equipment than donate it to terrorists. Capice? Peace ======= BTW: I've heard those $65,000 speakers. They are fantastic. I'm going to have a bad enough time trying to explain what I've got now." I thought you felt that having what you have was wrong (and the implication that it was bad to have more). CECAA850
I had created a poll at one point and it seemed the be the consensus (2-1) that it was disliked. Nothing seemed to happen though.
Deang
I don't even get the reason for the bump -- this thread didn't generate any interest over a decade ago and it doesn't look like it's generating any interest now.

Deang
I changed my mind. For some reason, I figure prominently in the majority of these bumped threads, and I kind of like reading my inane ramblings. Hey, maybe someone is trying to make people think that I'm bumping these threads, which would show what an egotistical, narcissistic maniac I am. Well, that wouldn't work, because everyone knows that's Craig.
Guest Steven1963
I clicked on the links and nothing was there! So I read some posts...nobody else was having that problem. So I went away. Then I came back and read some more...then I realized how old this thread is. No wonder the links didn't work! Anyway, that's my pathetic attempt at a bump.
